    We can all agree that the change of the 41st Division is brilliantly done

    By stepping up and calling Ozais plans horrible, he did consciously save the lives of the 41st division. The addition of them being forced to be taken with Zulo on his quest to find the avatar, is like icing on the cake, as Zuko now has to be reminded everyday of the decision he made, the reason he can’t come back home, and so he has this hateful relationships towards his crew as they are the reason for his banishment, but also his compassion as a human being

      One of my favorite episodes

      Yeah, Tom missed that Zuko “consciously” saved the 41st division because he did not want any lives lost for a faulty plan. Going against his father is what gave him his scar, his reminder that he is no longer a child; any decision and action has consequences.

    I love some of the things they added to this. The explanation for his crew being the one that essentially gave him his scar. The conversation with Ozai where he decides to send Zuko on the quest, and you can see that he's upset and emotional, but also heartless and convincing himself that this is the right thing to do.

    He may not have made the conscious decision to bring them with him, but he still spoke against sacrificing them and letting them live. I doubt he'd even make the decision to banish them alongside himself. That altnernative wouldn't have made any sense.

    While this Iroh is much different to me in this. I still love him. It works for this adaption. The best thing about live action is most of the time you can see emotion much better in the characters’ faces. And the Iroh in this, his emotions are so visceral and strong. He’s definitely my favorite in this.

      Yeah, live-action Iroh is not as funny and whimsical as OG Iroh, but we have to remember that the OG show is animated, so of course somethings will be exagerated for the sake of comedy, including Iroh's lighthearted nature. However, this version of him, despite more grounded, is still able to capture Iroh's true essence.

    23:35 He CONSCIOUSLY said, "It's a stupid plan to sacrifice lives,". That was the honorable thing to do.

    2:35-3:00 just like in the cartoon, sometimes I like it when people express how annoyed they are at times

    I know Shane and Tom were kind of divided on the whole 41st being Zuko's crew thing. Y'all didn't ask for my opinion, but you're getting it anyway because this is my favorite episode. Neiner neiner.
    No, Zuko did not directly choose the 41st and save their lives, but him standing up to his father over their being sent in as sacrifice and earning him his scar and banishment surely did so anyway. Although we see Zuko being bratty and stupid with them thus far, we never actually see him hold his banishment over their heads, probably from some mixture of shame and pride. He's probably even resentful of them on some level. And they clearly were unaware until Iroh told them here, so they thought he's just an insufferable spoiled prince, creating this feedback loop of mistrust. And then when they do find out, they decided to honor him with military salute when he comes back to the ship, and you can see Zuko break and start crying under it. He's probably thinking he doesn't deserve it, reflecting on himself - they really couldn't have been less subtle with that mirror scene, ahah. Is it a perfectly noble narrative? No. But that in and of itself is perfectly in line with Zuko's whole story arc IMO. He doesn't really get this level of depth to his character until season 2 of animated, and aside from a couple of episodes, he's pretty one-note for most of season 1. I do wish here that they'd given him at least one more small scene of him earning his crew's trust himself a la The Storm, but comparatively to animated, I still tend to think this hits harder emotionally anyway. That minor gripe aside, I can't really complain, because I was bawling my eyes out most of this episode.
    The live-action adaptation is far from perfect writing-wise, but scenes like this kind of makes me not care on some levels, because I've already indoctrinated the Zuko/Iroh stuff into the greater canon in my head. It gave me new things to think about, and that is worth something. Showing Ozai have a little more depth while still being unrepentantly evil was brilliant, showing Azula's early development to better set up her later arcs was brilliant, showing Iroh and Ozai actually interacting as brothers was brilliant. Showing that extra interaction between Aang and Zuko was brilliant. Dallas Liu is a goddamn treasure who perfectly understands his character and manages to walk the tightrope of angsty, angry teen drama and idiot, petty child while still delivering on humor from time to time. Watching his facial acting especially is a treat, because he just has so many amazing expressions that telegraph so much, even in places where there is no dialogue (scenes with less dialogue and more acting is something this show desperately needs to see more of IMO.) And oh yeah, he's an amazing martial artist. Apparently during the Agni Kai scene, even though DDK was pulling his punches for the camera, Dallas was still covered in bruises the next day, so some of that pain is probably real, lol. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee I think is also doing his own brilliant take on Iroh. I know some people think of him as flat, but personally I see what I think his angle is, and that it has a lot to do with the narration he's providing at the end here applying to himself. Trying to copy Mako would just come off as disrespectful caricature, IMO. And oh, the score. So good.
    I have 0 doubt in my mind with the next 2 seasons announced that these two are only going to get even better. Here's hoping the writing and pacing get ironed out to match.

      Hey, thanks for the opinion man and I think I agree with most of that for sure, and it’s written well. When it was all said and done, this was my favorite episode as well. I actually went back and watched it and the last two episodes. I mean I obviously went back to see Suki but who hasn’t!?
      On a serious note, though, I got pretty emotional watching this episode as well. The show is in a perfect adaption, but honestly, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it. I can’t wait until the next two seasons, hoping they can make improvements and continue to surprise us with episodes like this

    22:50 If the Fire Nation killed the Air Nomad Avatar 100 years ago, they would have heard news of its reincarnation in either of the Water Tribes. That didn't happen for the past 100 years, so they must have assumed that the Air Nomad Avatar is still alive somewhere.

    • @3rdstreetreactions
      @3rdstreetreactions  Před 5 měsíci

      That’s a good point! I know the cycle is very embedded into the cultures but 100 years is just a long time. I wouldn’t know what to think if there hasn’t been any news of one for 100 years.

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 Před 5 měsíci

      That must have been also the reasoning Gran Gran did on the live-action: the boy is the last airbender; no Avatar has been found on the Water Tribes, meaning the Air Nomad Avatar is still alive... therefore, the boy is the Avatar.
