I recommend cutting the directions off the package and putting it onto the container, as well as labeling the container in a couple different places, such as the top and the other side. This way if it's moved people will be able to see it easier, and if you're not around to cook the rice, the directions will be there to help those who do not know how to cook very well.
WOW I do that. I cut the label and directions on how to cook and then tape it to the bucket.
@@steadyathome5201 wonderful, just make sure you preserve it in plastic, in case there is flooding, or it be easier to tear when moving around. Even if you put it in the bucket, sometimes it's easier to grab out, or if you tape it to the bucket just make sure It's in a plastic bag.
Exactly what I do, Ritakus.
I do the same thing. I know how to cook everything BUT if I'm not here the people who may have to use my preps do not know how! I usually use packing clear tape and tape ALL the way over the directions to seal them and lay in the top.
My thought also
I cut re - glue the labels on what ever container I use.
Your curls are bomb! I actually like your hair better like this.
You're getting good mentions in Facebook groups - canning, dehydrating and prepping groups. You're known as being safety conscious, scientific in your approach and you're frequently mentioned as an excellent resource. It's no wonder you're noticing your popularity. 😊
Thank you for sharing that information. That really means a lot.
Yes I made her own place on my CZcams for both her channels
I love your curly hair. I battled my curly hair for years but now as a “woman of a certain age” I love the simplicity of leaving it natural. I just did a Costco run yesterday and I’ve spent the morning packaging my haul. Your previous shopping trip inspired me to go!
Me too!! I love just letting it curl now!!
I was packing my preps while watching y'all. We are having trouble finding the lids for the buckets. The buckets I find are about $5 but the lids!! They over $12 so it's a very slow process purchasing. BTW, love the hair! Thanks again for all the information. I always look forward to your next video.
@@gailcroslin1647 home Depot had "gamma" lids they are about $8.48 (? Close) (not name brand, but USA MADE FOOD GRADE). WALMART has the food grade buckets for a little over $4. That's where I am getting mine. Hope it helps. Be careful, be cautious, be mindful, be watchful, be prepared, above all PRAY 🛐📖🙏🕊️ show ❤️ like Jesus then if need be 🔫🏹 then victory 🙌🙌
@@grannyarbuckle5554 fairly close!! Last time I looked they didn't have any but I have errands to run today ill go by there. Thanks.
Me too on the curls. You can get food grade buckets from bakeries and lunch meat counters that sell salads. Some also have a gasket in the lid
I had to come back and give a warning about storing any chocolate products - mice. For me the only safe ways to store any type of chocolate product is either in metal or glass. Since we no longer have a cat we regularly get mice in the basement. Those buggers LOVE chocolate. My first experience (other than chocolate chips out of a bag sitting on a shelf unprotected because we never had mice) was discovering they had eaten through a very thick plastic canister that had never been opened. Evidently they could smell the cocoa right through the plastic. I taped over the hole and kept that as my "mouse indicator" - if it was open again we definitely had mice back.
Recently I discovered thick mylar doesn't work. I, sadly, discovered a 5 lb commercial bag of cocoa mix had been eaten into. Just now I discovered a commercial mylar 1 lb bag of cacao nibs is ruined. This bag was in a box of mixed products in mylar bags - the only thing touched. Now I will be sure ALL chocolate products are either stored in metal cans, metal file cabinet or glass containers - with lids firmly attached.
I also put plastic sandwich bags over every single jar or can of product I put into the basement. No more ...ick.. on jar tops.

Love your curls!
I love the curls! I have naturally curly red hair. A little girl in the family with straight red hair said she has the same hair as mine but mine is crazy! Lol watched your shopping video and went and got a membership and went shopping! $484 later we have added to our bucket list. I appreciate all you both do with bringing all this important information to us! Love your videos!
Wow, Kathy, that is fantastic! Sounds like you have a great start! Thank you for sharing.
@@RoseRedHomestead Hi, so we need to make sure the bugs dont live in our food with oxygen absorbers ....are they always in our food? or do they get in our food? I'm confused and gross out by bugs in our rice and beans. Let me know.
I lived in India with a local family for over a year. Each family would buy six months worth of rice at a time for the number of people in their families. They also believed that basmati rice was best if it was aged for a year. So, they always had about 18 months of rice per person. They had what looked like 50 gallon barrels, and the rice was stored in the barrels. So, a large family might have 10 of these barrels filled with rice at any given time.
Oxygen absorbers were unknown at the time. They kept the bugs away from the rice by using whole cloves or bay leaves. As the rice was put into the barrels, every few inches, bay or neem leaves would be tossed in - not many, 2 or 3. Then the barrel was sealed. Cloves were used in the same way - a teaspoon of cloves tossed in every 3 or 4 inches of rice in these big 50 gallon barrels.
The cloves and the bay leaves do perfume the rice to a certain extent, but not nearly as strong as one would think.
Once you open your container of rice, you could put 2 bay leaves on the top when you close the bucket.
Also, once I cooked some rice with a bay leave in it. I loved it and now I do it all the time. I can't really describe what it does for the rice, but it does a lot.
Thanks for sharing that info. I’ve always had the suspicion when I saw how bags of rice were stored in other countries, that oxygen absorbers were not necessary.
@@Navajosun I'm sure that oxygen absorbers work better, but its nice to know about other methods. In India, the Neem tree is called the "medicine" tree. Neem leaves are placed in cabinets to deter bugs, and I've heard that bay leaves work as well.
It is nice to know about other methods. Scientific experiments have shown that bay leaves do not deter bugs, but we each need to make our own decisions of what we feel best about. Even being a scientist I know that science does not have all the answers! LOL!
@@RoseRedHomestead I did not know that! Thank you!
I put bay leaves in with my flour and other grains, too.
Jim is right. You look FABULOUS!!!
Also must comment on the hair! Very flattering… Your husband is right! Youthful and beautiful…
Oh Pam, I love your curly hair! Jim, you are so sweet and funny! Happy that you are ok with your followers engaging you two, it’s very important as we all feel like you are our family. It’s wonderful all the great things you are teaching us, I have learned so much. Many other sites I watch, I see your name mentioned it’s wonderful. Thank you for all you do, I look forward to all your videos. You are my go to for information. God Bless.
Thank you, Sharon. And thank you for sharing that our information is getting out there. We really do appreciate that.
ditto but mine started going white when i was 19
Pam, you are my go-to for information, too. Everything I know about prepping I have learned from you. I love your scientific method of teaching the how and why of what you're doing.
With stores scrambling to stock their shelves, I have found that most recent purchases do NOT correspond with Best Buy dates. For example, one product purchased in May had a shorter time to Best Buy date than the same product purchased in January! Having noticed that, I put the Best Buy date on the front label so it is easy to read and rotate my stock by Best Buy dates, not purchased dates.
I do what you do as well
I have noticed the same thing and labelled the Best before date front and centre.
Great tip for others
This is a very good tip! Thank you!
Perfect timing- I am just getting ready to store rice in buckets- I wasn’t sure how many oxygen absorbers to use. Thank you always for your wonderful videos!
Man! I am jealous of those beautiful curls.
I just have to say that I love you so much and think you’re the perfect example of womanhood. Thank you so very much for all you do. God bless you and yours.
You wouldn't happen to be Linda Olson from Minnesota would you?
Pam I love your hair, it’s beautiful like that, and I mean it from my heart. Jim has good taste, and you two get along so wonderful, you both blessed to have each other.
Thanks you both for teaching these techniques in storing and prepping. Just appreciate you both and all you do for us.

Lovely hair!! Enjoying all of your very informative videos, thank you 😊 where can I get the square buckets for storage? Thank you so much, Connie 💜
Love your hair this way, very pretty I'm with Jim keep it like this. Great show.
You always look fabulous. Can’t beat beauty and brains!
Pam you and Jim are famous! You both are so loved. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills, you are one of the few that I trust for food storage and canning techniques. ❤️
I completely agree, Misskat, Pam & Jim are very loved and they are the only ones I trust for food storage, also.
The Maureen O'Hara of prepping. 🥰
LOL! Thanks.
I love the natural curl !
Love your curly hair. Appreciating your wisdom.
thanks so much for all this info! my mom used to can everything and even made her own noodles for soup. she passed on when i was 14 (she had ten kids from 3-20). your YT videos are like having my mom just a phone call away.
I agree with Mr Jim...... Being a newbie at Canning, I have learned sooooo much from you both! 1st canning as I write (French Onion Soup). So look forward to your posts!
LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR HAIR...and of course, your videos!!
Love, love, love your curly hair!
I vacuum sealed 40 bags of flour yesterday just like she showed in her other video! I’m so happy to begin long term storage for my family. We eat A LOT of bread!
Can you give me a date for the flour video? Thanks in advance ☺️

Love the curly look! Makes you look younger than your other style.
Yes, CURLY!!! Very flattering. You're aging backwards!
Love the hair! And yes hide them! That’s funny! I have to hide things from my husband!
I have curly hair too!!! You always want, what you don’t have. You knocked off 10 years off your face, just by letting your locks go naturally. 😘 Great video once again & thanks for the Carey Canner testing update also! I have 2 and been canning in them for well over 5 years now. No issues. I also have an AA921 but my Carey’s are truly the loves of my life. So much simpler & appreciated once you start to age. Have wonderful weekend U2 & thank you once again. 🥰
Your hair looks wonderful either style! I laughed when you confessed about the chocolate chips! I have the same problem! I live alone, so it’s difficult for me to hide it from myself. AS I age, it might become easier🥴
Thank you for your informative videos, I have referred them to several people that are starting to can or prepare. You have been so helpful to us all!
I also have curly hair, but waist length. Every morning, my husband says I look like a hay bale shot out of a canon! 😂
Love it, love that man. My man also a Jim ❤
Love, love, love the curly hair, gracious, makes you look younger. Really is beautiful.
People, like me, are grateful for the information you provide, succinctly and in such a pleasant manner, that it's a joy to watch. Jim cracks me up.
How lovely it is that you are both on the “same page”.
My other half (of almost 40y) thinks I’m quite cray-Z and makes no input to my prepping philosophy 🤷♀️🤦♀️
Feel very blessed 🙏❤️
My husband thought the same too I think then kind of came round but honestly cause I think nothing has happened yet I'd say he still thinks I'm a bit nuts although he does talk about all the things that's happening in the world
You are one classy lady! 🥰👍🏼❤️
Yes curly. God given is always best. You look younger, more current and stylish. Love it!!
The first advertising picture shows your hair and it is GORGEOUS!! The video with Cindy her hair is GORGEOUS too! As a former cosmetologist (how put myself through college) I would do all I could to get you to go with your natural gifts. Wash, condition, "scrunch" your hair and relax and enjoy!! Jim is so right and truly very becoming! And you (Rose RED website) are quite the topic in my circle 🙂.
Back to the lesson of the day. The bean salad is a staple in my home the jars have gotten smaller but still fabulous! I heard you mention canned salmon (your home canning) is it possible you are willing to video Canning salmon? THAT would be amazing because of omega3. Watching you seemingly single handedly (with family) sounding the alerts to get prepared in case the alarm needs to be enacted. So many people are better prepared than they would have been had you not decided to teach the world how to protect and take care of our families.
Canning was a dying art, not anymore my friends not anymore. Gardening too, micro greens. In eternity I hope to meet you and Thank you for all you have done and are doing. You truly live as your brothers and sisters keepers. I fell in love with your hearts a long time ago. Your tireless moving forward with these teachings, I recognize can be daunting so many owe you a debt that can never be repaid. The best we can do right now is pay it forward. Share, like and comment to get many more people aware of your mission, vision, and teachings. Thank you EVERY DAY! ❤️ 😊
Beautiful and true words, EF H. I fell in love with their hearts, also. Yes, they are their brothers and sisters keepers.
A friend gave me a bunch of those styrofoam shipping containers used for a popular hamburger patty. They’re like an ice chest without the plastic shell. Real tight lids with a labyrinth seal. Excellent for storage of heat sensitive food. I vacuum bagged beans, rice and wheat berries and filled them up. I’m also in the high desert only in California. Summer time temperatures can take your breath away.
That is a great idea. I was thinking about lining 5 gallon buckets with bubblewrap on the inside. Not sure how well that would work. Styrofoam is much better
Where did you get your wheat berries?
@@oceanbluewaves4918 I ordered the first bags from WINCO. At the time they only sold them in the bulk food section by the pound. If you wanted more they would bring them in for you. Last ones I bought were on the shelf in twenty five pound bags. ( at WINCO ) Price is going up though but still massively less expensive than any on line store.

Azure Standard is a good resource, especially if you have a drop point close to you. That way you save a lot on shipping.
Your haircut modernizes you and makes you look younger- easier- keep it that way- we love your vids!
I like your curly hair and it flatters you.
LOVE your hair! I learn so much each time you share your wisdom. There is a Winco not too far away so am making a trip over there. The 2 gal buckets is such a good tip because I can no longer lift the 5 gal when they are full. Also, converting to the gamma lid was totally new to me also. Your channel (you and Jim) is such a valuable resource…Thank you so much🙂
We are thrilled the information was useful for you. Yes, those two gallon buckets are a life safer for us! We will slowly be converting over to them going forward.
@@nanmaco Thanks for the info…I’m definitely going to talk with a couple of deli/bakery owners near me.
Exactly what I need to see. I am getting ready to do this right now. I was wondering how to freeze and dry out grains and legumes before storage and if I need a bucket liner. By the way, you should wear your hair this way more. It suits you.
It definitely doesn't hurt to line your buckets with mylar bags and seal your food inside the mylar, inside the bucket..
@@chancepoindexter3161 Is that what you do? If so, do you have any problems with the food? I stopped using the bags and oxygen absorbers because when I opened my food some after 6 months it had a funny taste and smell.
@@Tess-he3qg I only use them for beans and rice,I haven't had any problems yet..
@@Tess-he3qg Did you use food grade oxygen absorbers??
I love the curls. Keep them .
you two are so cute, such a nice couple.....so happy you are a match made in heaven!
Thank you! Jim
The two of you make a fantastic team! Also, I say curly hair suits you. Simply lovely.
Love your curly hair. I enjoy your videos and learn so much. I write with a sharpie the expiration date on top of my products rather than purchase date. This way I can use it before it expires.
Your hair looks fantastic!!! Always wear it that way!!
I actually LOVE this look for you! It makes you look so lively and spunky!
Your hair is beautiful this way! I like it. I struggled for a few years with curly hair when I was young, gave up on it, and have worn it natural for the past 50 years. Thanks for another great video.
I love your tutorials and I love your relationship with your hubby. I am learning a lot, even at my age 67 and even though I have tried to have a healthy pantry, you still show me other ways I have not considered. Thank you both
It's so beautiful, ignore the naysayers!
I LOVE 💗 your natural curly hair! Please keep it the way God made it! 🥰
Yes to the curls and thank you for this info.
Once again, just have to say...I love your hair au naturel, Pam! SO becoming. I used to wash my hair everyday, straighten it, and curl it with a curling iron. And I have naturally curly hair, too!! Nowadays, I'm too old for that stuff (57). You are beautiful the way God made you!! ~Angela
I love the curly look!
Love, love, I love your hair like that. It looks new, updated, refreshed and you look great.
Greetings Pam and Jim! New canner here at 74! Retired RN. SO appreciate your videos, love the science and believe you are providing the safest instruction. Following all your sage advice and USDA guidelines. Researching. Thank you so very much. My mother had the explosion experience and was badly burned so I was terrified. Have canned carrots, and chicken this last week in my Instant Pot Max-success!!! BTW your red curls are absolutely stunning! Love them. Appreciate you. So grateful.
Terry: Thanks for all of the complements and and being able to over come your mom's accident and your own fears. Pam had red curly hair when I met her. Jim
You might consider a silver or light colored Sharpe for marking dark labels. I found it works well when I use painters tape to label things in my storage.
Thank you for the tip.
Oh yes, keep the curls. Love your podcast..
I'm grateful for your advice and great hair!
I love the curls. Either way you’re a beauty! I’m so glad I found your channel. I’ve learned so much from you!
Thank you so much!
In the food industry we called food rotation FIFO. First in, first out.
I love the curls, you look 20 years younger.
I love your curls! LOVE it!!
Hi Pam and Jim,
I love the smaller buckets for the rice that you used. Now that is something that I can lift. I really love your curly hair. I am in agreement with Jim! I also have curly hair but I wasn’t blessed with lots of it like you and Cindy. Anyway, just wanted you to know how beautiful it looks. Yes, another opener for the buckets was a great thing to buy. I don’t want people coming in and finding our dead bodies near a bucket because we couldn’t get it opened, and believe me they are so hard to open you NEED something reliable to open them. I have a metal bucket opener as the plastic sometimes breaks. Which reminds me to thank you for the reminder to get another plastic faucet for the water jugs, as they do break, as yours did. I would never have thought of that. (It was in your last video). Thank you both for the video and congratulations to your son, on his graduation.
Thank you for your comment and for your kind words. We appreciate that.
I just LOVE your curls ! ! I have spent LOTS of money over the years to get mine curly ! ! ! Love your channel, keep up the wonderful work you are doing ! !

So enjoy your channel. Thanks for the time, thought and care you and Jim put into bringing your content to us. So appreciated.
A great Video again 😊👍 I have a 5 years old rice Bucket and I had to think about what to do with it. If it becomes too old it will be waste and I don't like that. So I decided to make rice Vinegar. There are Japanese recipes existing, where you use Rice Koji (Aspergillus fungus) and then one liter of organic Apple vinegar for delivering the Acid bacteria. This Vinegar is able to be canned in bottles for a long time period. I am searching for a camera and some times I tamed the video software 😖😵 I will show you some of my work (homemade wheat with Mockmill 200 and baking something with it and may be that rice Vinegar) My health condition is not the best, but I try it. Lots of greetings from Germany, Sascha
We lived in Germany 3 different times. Love & miss it.
Love the curls too.
You all are so funny. When you went in for the spelling of rice I cracked up so much. THANK YOU
Absolutely love your hair with all the curls........adorable! Thank you for sharing this info with all of us. You and your hubby do a fantastic job explaining everything.
Loved this and love your natural curls!!!!
I’ve got to take the bucket list and get my food storage restocked!
Thank you, thank you! 💕

Your hair is lovely curly. You look 20 years younger! Beautiful inside and out; you and Jim both❣️
I love your hair like that! I have learned so much from you and Jim. Thanks for all you do. I love Cindy and her husband; they are the frost on the cookie.
I'm glad you mentioned storing in your garage. We have moved many times but always had a basement. Now our "30 year" freeze dried is in the garage and it bothers me. Thanks.
One commenter below mentioned freezing in the garage. I have an enclosed room for food storage in the garage. Simply turn a 40w bulb on when the temps get too low. Your food will be just fine.
You know the new LED bulbs don't give off heat. Went out and bought boxes of old ones before they went out of stock so I would have plenty for pump hose, cold room, or actually seeing better! Think I'm set for life!
I gave myself permission to be free. I let my curls go and my color. Being 50+ I get many compliments. I think natural gives freedom without putting pressure on self.
Really love your naturally curly hair. Very flattering style on you.
Thanks for the food storage info.
Diane: Thank you so much! Jim
Pam, I thought Basmati rice didn't have a long shelf life? I have stayed with white rice, for this very reason :( But if you say it will last 10-15 years, this is my next purchase :) I just LOVE you guys' videos :) And it was fun with Jim, your Sissy, and her hubby too! Sounds like today you are feeling better, that was nice to hear. Have a great weekend!
White rice lasts nearly forever. Brown rice is the one with a short shelf life :)
@@KellyS_77 Yes, I knew that, but I "thought" Basmati was included. TY for your reply :)
I believe she said that basmati rice usually has only a 1 year shelf life but with oxygen absorbers 2-3 years
Yo. I work in basmati rice imports. White basmati lasts for years and years just like any white rice when stored correctly. Older basmati is actually going to cook up better than new, as it will have a lower moisture content. The best basmati is aged at least a year before it goes to market.
@DinoSarma great point

I love the 2 to 3 gallon buckets because it is just me and I suffered a neck injury years ago that makes lifting some things difficult. I use my 5 gallon buckets for salt, sugar, and baking soda. The smaller buckets are for rice, beans, and pasta.
I didn't think of that! I'm physically disabled & dragging 5 gal buckets around is painful. Thanks!
