- We address the kind of containers to use, how to prepare the containers and the water for storage, how to sanitize the water if it becomes contaminated, and how to help it taste better after it has been stored for a long time.
Correction: I pint of base solution will sanitize 12.5 gallons of water.

Who doesn’t love this precious lady. 💜
For sure!
Yup!!
Right??!!
I wish she was my mom
💕💕💕
You handled that question "why do we even need to store water" so classy, if it was me, I would have said something like....have you been paying attention even a little? lol. This is why I dont have a you tube channel...LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel...thank you for all the tine you put into this!!
same here. I would ask if they have been living under a rock (and much worse)
Hey! Nice to see you on here! 👋🏼❤️
@@pattiannepascual lol
@@Jennifer_Cruz Hiya, nice to see you too!! love this woman, she is the reason I can make bread now :)
Keep on making BREAD... it's not a hard art... and I watched her make bread on a video and was like... HMMM I only made 3 loaves at a time... WOW
Thank you Pam & Jim for providing 3 years of great content!
Happy Anniversary, Pam and Jim! You know that you have changed lives and dispelled bad information that is being thrown around by people who don't know their science.
I never though in a million years we would have to worry about having enough food in the Unites States. But the last 2 years have really opened my eyes. I have just begun my long term storage journey. I was wondering how we would get fresh water. I just ordered the Calcium Hypochlorite that solves one of my problems. Thanks so much for all the information.
I have added a water purifier like campers use, with an extra filter.
I agree - her video on that opened my eyes too - we have a pool on our property and buy shock every year... I am sure what we buy isn't qualified for water purification but I surely am going to buy several bags of what RoseRed says to buy - and shock for our pool is very expensive so expect what you buy to purifiy your water is expensive too... but that bag I think will go a long way compaired to me putting it in my 7000 gallon pool.
The last 1.5 years. This is only since Biden
@@lisahertel2415 Very much agree.
Thank you Pam for all your channel on utube.I'm learning at my age of 72 years how to store long term .Also trying to learn water storage .I have several five gallon containers just like yours My husband is disabled so its all on me .
Thank you for your wonderful videos, I am a 72 year old, a widow, a nurse and have always been a prep ahead person…the times we are in now is very scary even for those of our age that have been through some hard times, and your videos gives us some hope to carry on, our ancestors handled hard times in a different way than some do today, so to get back to Basics and stop talking and start doing something constructive and useful and taking responsibility for our families and ourselves…I pray for you and Jim, because you are true hero’s in my book…🙏🇺🇸🙏
Well sais
Pam, how do you do? My name is Joyce and I've been watching your videos for a while now. I appreciate your tried and true methods of food/ water storage and preparedness methods and would like to thank you both for doing the homework. I do research everything as you advise your viewers to do . You are on target and I am glued to your channel because it is honest and educational. I just wanted to thank you so very much.
Too bad she doesn't look at comments, love her style though....
Rose! I wanted to bring to your attention when I clicked on the calcium hypochlorite link to Amazon I noticed the packaging was different and upon looking at the active ingredient it lists "other" as well. I see it does have algae killer in it so I thought perhaps they linked a new version of TKO to the old description. They don't realize an "improved" version would be something we can't use. I could be wrong, but I wanted to bring to your attention.
Pam - I can see how serious and deliberate you are when you share this crucial information, but I wish I could find the words that appropriately define the vibe you send ~ it's a kindhearted and tender concern that emanates from you to your viewers and subscribers. It's exactly how I would speak to my loved ones. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart and may God bless you and Jim for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us. P.S. What beautiful roses - you are so fortunate to have a gem like Jim (and vice versa)! ♥
I remember the flood of '93, and we had to wait in long lines for canned water. I'm in Iowa. Boy that was miserable for us all
Hey Pam, would love to see some videos on what to do after a nuclear attack. Specifically being indoors & how to cook, dispose of waste, etc. especially if your preps are in a garage or some other external location.
❤ your videos. Recommend you to everyone!!
When my mom was teaching me to pressure can back in '62 (I'm old) she taught me to pressure can water, because it was a good way to learn to pressure can without risking wasting food if the jars didn't seal. We also store water in the freezer, which along with blankets to fill voids in the freezer, helps keep food frozen for days.
Why have water storage? One need only STOP and think about how much water one uses daily to see how valuable water is. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Thankfully around here most folks have solar well houses or old-fashioned Amish style hand water pumps on their back porches.
I'm old as well! LOL. Yes, practicing on water is a great idea.
Thank you Pam and Jim. I never let my wife or daughter leave the house without a supply of water in their car because of your wise words.
Wonderful!! I found that very touching to read. Thanks for being a great husband and father!
My grandparents loved 🤩😍 Julia Child 💖🕯️🌹❤️ You are the Julia Child of Preppers. May God 👑💖 bless you and yours mightily!!!🇺🇸🌹❤️🌆🌎🛡️💪🩹🔐❣️💐💖
Great video, as always! Many in the "prepper" community recognize that if people are going to be highly active, then 3 gallons minimum per person, per day is what you want to plan to have. Much of that is going to be for drinking, but then you also have washing yourself and cooking. Some even plan for 5 gallons per day. Obviously the elderly and the very young will not use so much, but do we want to put our eggs in that basket? Also, the person may not be able to participate in group washing and cooking activities, so do we really want to PLAN on them being able to do it? I think that too many fail to address recycling the water we would use in that situation and we need to be practicing that NOW because trying to learn it then is not the time. Just things for each person to think about for their own situation.
Awesome job letting people know about pool shock, Pam! Simply fantastic!
Just wanted to share my two cents about a couple items in this video:
I would highly advise against not using milk cartons to store water. Dairy spoils very easily. So if there there is even the slightest remnants of milk left in that container it could spoil the entire jug. If that is absolutely all you have to store in then make sure you thoroughly clean and sanitize it. Also, because the containers are typically semi-transparent, it makes the ideal environment for growing algae
There is a company called "Simple Pumps" which sets your well up with a modern hand pump for a grid down, pump water by hand without Electricity. Can be used in your well along side your electric pump. good alternative those who have personal wells.
Being from Florida, I'm use to hurricane season. I have what they call bathtub bladders. If you have an extra bathroom (we do) you can keep it full of water in the bladder and even change it out regularly.
I do too! I have the brand called Waterbob... one for each tub.
@@MakelleBell Yeah. Thats the name!!!!!! Haven't had to use it yet but did bring them out during Irma....
I am from FL too! My bathtub leaks. So I found putting some rubbermaid storage in tub before an hurricane event. I can store water in them for toilet and cleaning for after the stoem. Last big event I been through. the power was out 4 days. Util co was using a generator to keep sewer system working and was starting to fall.. Luckily power went on before the sewer system failed. This hurricane didnt rain alot after the storm.
Used my Water-Bob for Hurricane Ian. Saved us for indoor water for pets. I also have several months of bottled water for us. 2 big 55 gallon drums full for emergency for the horses ( again, saved us with Ian!) And I have multiple blue 7 gallon containers full in the garage. Also stashed several different emergency water filter systems. Shelter, Water, Food. Faith!!!
I listen to another CZcams channel, and he says the '7 P's' at the end of his videos:
Proper

Planning

Piss

It is better to have and not need, than need and not have. Just remember to rotate stock lol!
JeannineS: Yes, always rotate on a regular basis, which means you have to use (older) items in front, and add new ones to the back of your stock pile. Jim
I may have missed this, but sometime could you talk about the difference between sanitizing and purifying and filtering water? Thank you! We appreciate you very much!
Would it be possible for you to post the reference table you mentioned for the bleach amounts to add depending on the percentage you have?
Bleach does not smell the same as years past and no longer is labeled chlorine. Have you noticed that and have you used something different?
I have the same blue water storage containers. Preparing and filling them is on my list of things to do this weekend. Thank you for sharing all the valuable information. By the way... that blouse is beautiful and looks so good on you!
Eyes: You are so welcome! Thanks for watching our channel. Jim
Please share where you purchased your blue containers. Posting a link would be even better.
Thanks in advance!
@@qthesouth4697 I think they sell them on Amazon
Great idea using canning jars in between canning. I found the water available check, leak and expensive. I didn’t like the expanding jugs. I ordered your blue jugs. Yes expensive but sturdy.
Thank you. Always hear something new.
Update received our blue jugs. Nice !
Linda: We are always working on something new and useful. Jim
Hi Pam - in reference to your advice about storing water you said in answer to a subscriber question that you can store water in used milk cartons.
I am from New Zealand and the New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) recommends that you "...Don’t use plastic jugs or cardboard containers that have had milk in them. Milk protein cannot be removed from these containers....". I agree with this because storing
water in used milk containers could make you sick.
You are a woman after my own heart! I am thrilled to have found your channel. I have been working for several years to solve problems you are addressing. Thanks so much! You are fun to watch and vastly knowledgable.
Dottye: Thanks for finding our channel. Jim
Thanks for the update. I have the calcium hypochlorite and need to get some of the containers. For those using bleach, make sure it is NOT the splashless kind. It contains soap and does not disinfect.
EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT video !
So important. In 3 years you have changed so many lives.
Special blessings to each of you 🕯
Thank you so much! Your kind words mean a lot to us.
As always, thank you Rose
Congratulations to you both on three years of wonderful presentations of high quality content!!! I always feel that my time spent watching you is among the most valuable minutes of my day! This video today was fantastic - such valuable information! Thank you for your dedication to presenting knowledgeable and useful information.
Thank you so much!
Now, why did I not think of putting water in my empty canning jars? Such a simple but wonderful idea! You are just a wealth of knowledge and I so enjoy your videos, Pam!
What a fantastic hack about filling up empty canning jars! I just filled 2 cases of empty quart jars. Very cool! Thanks!
Learn this and do more research on this. I am confident we’ll need this one day. It is said that a person can only live for 3 days without water.
Great video! During the 2020 lockdowns, bleach was unobtainable...I am a bleach user (my choice) for my laundry and mopping my floors and bathroom cleaning. I used a 2.5 gallon blue water container and made the solution according to the EPA guidelines. Although I did not have a water sanitizing use for it, I was able to use it as regular bleach for my needs...
Woo hoo for the 3 year anniversary! I'd say it's a perfect time to make an "off grid" Happy Anniversay Page cake!!! 😃
Thank you as always for taking such good care of your subscribers. You and Jim are priceless and so appreciated.
We live outside a major metropolitan area not prone to any natural disasters. A number of years ago there was a widespread power outage. We were not affected but our town gets water from the large city and their pumps were down. We have water towers but once they were empty that was it. So a water shortage can hit anywhere. In addition to our potable water we also have a stash of 'improperly' stored water-not sanitized and in old soda bottles that you're not supposed to reuse. I wouldn't drink it, but it's fine for flushing and in a pinch I'd water the veg with it. So be creative and use what you have on hand. Not all water is for drinking and you can use any old clean container for toilet water, just label it. That way you can use the better containers for drinking water and you have plenty on hand for other uses.
Excellent, excellent words! Thank you so much for sharing these ideas.
Diane, I have a similar system. I reuse juice containers for my water intended to be potable, and Tidy Cat litter jugs for water intended for other purposes. I also use the Tidy Cat buckets (after cleaning) to store my vacuum sealed food. They are actually food safe plastic. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of so many before getting that idea.
@@carlabythelake8162 Those are great ideas.
I also store some water to use in the toilet and for washing. I use laundry soap jugs for this and store them in the crawlspace.
We clean our barrels with fresh Clorox. We use RV hoses to fill our barrels because they are the cleanest. We add a water purification solution to the water stored in the barrels which extends the shelf life to 5 years. We will be changing out this summer and watering our plants. Honestly, our water is a six-month supply for four people, a cat, and two dogs. We factored in water for our freeze-dried foods. We also have handheld water purification. Find any corner in the house or garage for a 55-gallon container, fill it up and use it to set things on, like freeze-dried food. I agree water is number one on the planning list.
No one would NOT love this precious lady! She is so smart! So inciteful! So CORRECT! My husband and I love, love, LOVE you, RoseRed Homestead! You are so inspirational - you're the best! So is JIM! :) Thank you from Alabama!
Two ideas...offer (for sale) transcribed copies of your shows; and/or write a book! You have so much fantastic information on so many essential subjects, and it would be wonderful to have it in written form!
Connie: That is an interesting suggestion, but it is not feasible. We have more than 300 videos and with our schedules, that would not be possible. Jim
After surviving catastrophic fires, nearly wiping out everything in our town(s), our water was heavily contaminated, unsuitable for drinking. The water was not drinkable by boiling or chlorinating. So water had to be trucked in for drinking, cooking etc. Cleaning the water in our communities has taken several years. It's just recently our water company has resumed normal testing and cleaning methods, we can drink our water now. But you can bet we store water!
When I have a not full canner, I can as many jars of water as will make a full canner. Figured when I was learning to use the harvest guard or tattler type lids might as well not waste the water I canned to learn. Yes, I rotate them because I need those jars now and then...lol so I water with it or drink it.
For the lady with an electric well pump, she may want to consider a solar powered backup generator and making sure she knows how to switch the pump over.
Perfect Dana! Anybody that has an electric well pump needs to have a plan B whether it be a solar pump or the old fashioned hand pump.
What a lovely blouse! It brings out your eyes :D
How did you know that I was going out today to stock up on water? It's a very timely video indeed!
Thank you for this video! Love your gift idea!
Happy Anniversary 😊 love your channel wish I had found it sooner but I looked back older ones too
Extremely helpful!!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you! you are awesome!
I got a cottage in Blue Ridge. Life in the mountains includes broken pipes from Util. Co. and/or frozen pipes. My cottage is small. I store my bottle water on a 4 shelf metal shelves on an outdoor porch.. I place my Gal. bottle water on shelves and wrap it and clip it with 2 long table clothes. Last time my pipe broke. I used 3 gal of water for 1 person and small dog. Note. My Low flow toilet uses 1.22 gallon of water. I flushed once a day. Just remember no paper in toilet when water is out.
I store both store bought (drink) and tap water for cleaning. Storing in darkness is important. Yes, i live in 2 areas.
Marie: An interesting lesson in real water management. Jim

I was absolutely floored when you said that you were asked why we need to store water!! You are a wonderfully kind and gracious person to answer that question without making the people that asked that not feel bad. It must be the professor in you 😊. I guess it isn't as common knowledge as I thought. Thanks for helping to keep everyone prepared. The more prepared more people are, the better it will be for us all.
You are right about that. Thanks.

So much good information. Thank you, both.
Once again you are a plethora of information. Also you build confidence that allows us to do what we need to do . Because I could have a house full of people in a short period of time . And god knows my grandchildren are not prepared.but they will come to nana .
Great video, Pam & Jim. If I could add some information here that I've recently learned: Municipal water probably contains parasites. Chlorine kills bacteria, but not parasites. Just thought I'd put that out there. I really appreciate your videos. I've learned so much from you two.
