Lyrics
Joseph was taken to egypt in chains and sold
Where he was bought by a captain named potiphar
Potiphar had very few cares
He was one of egypt’s millionaires
Having made a fortune buying shares in
Pyramids
Potiphar had made a huge pile
Owned a large percentage of the nile
Meant that i could really live in style
And he did
Oh i did
Joseph was an unimportant slave
Who found he liked his master
Consequently worked much harder
Even with devotion
Potiphar could see that joseph
Was a cut above the av’rage
Made him leader of his household
Maximum promotion
Potiphar was cool and so fine
But my wife would never toe the line
It’s all there in chapter thirty-nine of genesis
She was beautiful but evil
Saw a lot of men against his will
He would have to tell her that she still was his
You’re mine
Joseph’s looks and handsome figure
Had attracted her attention
Ev’ry morning she would beckon
Come and lie with me, love
Joseph wanted to resist her
Till one day she proved too eager
Joseph cried in vain
Please stop
I don’t believe in free love
Pity
Potiphar was counting shekels
In his den below the bedroom
When he heard a mighty rumpus
Clattering above him.
Suddenly he knew his riches
Couldn’t buy him what he wanted
Gold would never make him happy
If she didn’t love him
Letting out a mighty roar
Potiphar burst through the door
Joseph i’ll see you rot in jail
The things you have done are beyond the pale
Poor, poor joseph, locked up in a cell
Things ain’t goin’ well hey
Locked up in a cell
Poor, poor joseph locked up in a cell
Things ain’t goin’ well hey
Locked up in a cell
Locked up in a cell

In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

“... made a fortune buying shares in Pyramids.” So I guess Potiphar was involved in one of the world’s first Pyramid schemes
Haha nice one
Cody Miller yep
🤣 I’m screaming
I don’t get it
@@SootWhisker ok so a pyramid scheme is a business plan, and Potiphar's business that got him his fortune involved pyramids. they both involve the word pyramid. buying shares in pyramids isn't necessarily a pyramid scheme, but because it's a business scheme that involves pyramids, you can refer to it as a pyramid scheme to make a funny funny.
I thought this was a childhood fever dream
Saaame
samee
i watched this movie for the first time today and literally throughout the whole thing i was saying "yo is this a fever dream if so please don't wake me up"
Is it not
You were right.
I brought this in for my class to watch in year 4. My teacher described her as a "naughty lady who made Joseph do something he didn't want to"
That's gold 😂😂😂😂
LOL! That sums up rape to explain to 9 year olds!
Gross
I think my teacher said the same
So, sexual assault.
THIS MADE ME SO DARN UNCOMFORTABLE AS A CHILD
my dad likes this musical so i decided to have a look
this is the fist thing i have seen.
Same
Same here even as an adult this whole scene makes me uncomfortable 😂
this is just scary
Same i watched this in school and it's a great movie and a great musical and we all loved it but this was a weird moment to experience with a class lol
Need I remind you that in this version, there are SCHOOLCHILDREN in the audience watching and they're all played by their teachers!
Oh-
I did this show in year 6 and I was hella embarrassed cause of this bit like wtffffffffffuck
@@pgmagnum9117 I did this show in 2017 and I had to play in the choir
IKR
I had to watch it in school
Narrator: Gold would never make her love him
Potiphar: Is holding silver
Must be gold hidden as sliver.
Illuminati: stay right where you are
The song has a black and white colour scheme. Gold wouldn't fit
Potiphar is asshole can we thorw him in jail with it because i want Joseph did nothing wrong i am the devil Favorite grim reaper son undertaker not like potiphar you will Never come out to helling at Joseph thorw your money on the table counting on your head you are a bullie
Radagast sooooooooooo true😂
I remember in 6th grade we watched this movie in class and when we got to the wife my teacher threw a blanket over the tv and yelled "NO! WHEN YOU'RE OLDER!"
Smart teacher.
The FrigginPizzaMan lol 😂
@@CNMU Harsh.
Haha, we did this Musical as the end of year musical(in the schools theatre for the rest of the school, teachers, parents, family and who ever was invited by them) with my class when we were 11-12 years old. (':
@@DreamerN Wow!
I think this version of Potiphar knew full well that his wife moved on Joseph, and not vice versa. And she probably has done this before several times. But he is so hopelessly devoted to her that he'd rather just pretend it was the other person's fault.
+Panic! At The Undertale Disco I'm not sure whether it's him who forces her to be with him, or her being a gold-digger while having countless affairs with others
Its also a status thing - it'd ruin his reputation if people found his wife was a cheat.
@@Biffbifflin I think she's probably a gold digger
He always knew. Even in the original.
@@JavertRA Not only that, but the fact that he pardoned a slave, since slaves were looked down upon.
My god i throwback to the days when i literally had to watch through this scene with my family awkwardly
God you said god when your username is god.
I'm confused
SEEDENG is the BEST DOCTOR SQUISH well god has a god, he runs ultra heaven
Carter only 1 God and one Heaven
I know right
Dude i first saw this when i was 3. And this seen was the first time i ever got turned on (a few years later)... imagine my pain
this movie inflicted upon me an appreciation for women with creaky/crackly voices. the narrator just lets her voice break wherever it wants to and i can't get enough of it
Can we just talk about the costume and set design in this scene? Like it looks like if twin peaks was done by Tim Burton but it just works so well! It’s trippy, it’s elegant, it’s loud, it’s a little sexy! It works far too well!
I think it's more 20s art deco
Are we gonna talk about how in 3:51 the Narrator's vocals were ON POINT like GOD
She unfortunately did not reach Laurie Beechman's range.
That's why she got the job.
Maria Friedman is great. And so's her son, he's on tiktok, very funny lad.
Marcelo Benitez true dat.
What about Potiphar’s perfect “Aughhhhhhhh”?
Idk why but I love how the narrator sings 'burst through the door' 😂 probs just me

Martha Ramsay it’s my favorite part! I could listen to it over and over.

Can we just talk about what a SNACK joseph is
abby miller , I just found out what SNACK means --slang for a sexy man!!?? Joseph is played by Donny Osmond whom I have loved❤️ for 55 years!!! And YES, he is definitely a snack. Or as Oprah said regarding the meaning of snack, Donny Osmond "is a 5 course meal."
purrsandwhispers
He do be a snacc doe
abby miller Bitch
@Vinluv Handesbuk Technically they're sexualizing Donny Osmond but it's cool when we just don't sexualize people, period
That’s what this entire song is about.
The costumes are SO different in this year's UK national tour! I went to see this yesterday with Joe McElderry playing Joseph and the girls' costumes are much less sexualised!
Cherokee Ray, I wouldn't say they'd be outraged. I watched this as a child and my parents weren't phased at all. That was only 15 years ago
Chloe Jones I
Chloe Jones was it in Cardiff?
Chloe Jones yes true
In my school play I was Potiphar's wife and I had to sing this whole song as a solo
Man this scene really takes place in another dimension from the rest of the show.
Joseph: "Please stop, I don't believe in free love!"
Pontiphar's wife: "that's fine, I don't mind paying for it"
Narrator has an amazing voice very powerful
Yep
As a child I always LOVED this segment, it was my favorite, and I would rewatch it a lot. Looking back, seems a little weird...
Ok but same though. I think it might have had something to do with awakening my sexuality lol
@@Duchess1223 Potiphar was definitely light in the loafers…marriage of wealth not love! Why do you think his wife wanted to boink Joseph! Lol
Laaaaawl! I'd never thought of it that way before! Unfortunately for both of them, this marriage was not built on love.
I remember these scene giving me anxiety and stressing me out really bad when I was little 😂😂 I was always REALLY uncomfy throughout the WHOLE song 😂
(Just finished the video... WAAAAAAY more mortifying than when I was younger 😭😭)
"When he heard a mighty rumpus clattering above him" is such a funny line, I've been laughing at it for decades
Donny Osmond looks pretty good in this. Love it xx 😘
That moment when you realize the actors who played the brothers played:
-Potiphars servants
-the prisoners
- and Pharohs servants
Yes ! At 4:06 there is Judah between Potiphar and the girl.
Wow... I saw this many times and NEVER noticed that.
Bet that must have given them a headache
Really? The prisoners?
Wow, I totally never realized this.
I don't know which is better, the wife's face when Potiphar says she's his, or the handmaiden's face at 04:09
She looks like she needs to ask him a question but it's really not a good time
"JOSEPH WAS TAKEN TO EGYPT IN CHAINS AND SOLD"
Where he was bought by a captain named potipher
I was convinced this what happens inside the pyramids
My grandma invited me over to watch this movie with her. I enjoyed it a lot but imagine watching this scene with your grandma
I bet you were like what the hell is this gran?
I think the true star ⭐️ is the Narrator. Just fantastic with that mighty voice.
His fall always freaks me out!
cast as potiphar in my high school’s production of joseph. can’t wait to bring this character to life!
Man, I can't decide if I like Potiphar or the Pharaoh better
Pharaoh hands down. No competition.
Elvis “Pharaoh” Presley!
25 + years ago I was lucky enough to see Donny Osmond live and in the flesh (that just sounds wrong) in _Joseph_ .
To this day, I can’t believe Donny was willing to wear that costume, but I am sure happy he did!
Can we take a moment and appreciate the sets!?
When I was a kid I always thought everyone who went to jail got thrown down a big hole thanks to this movie
Should be
I watched this in elementary school, I didn’t know what the heck was going on. I just watched it for the music. Watching it again years later, I still watch it for the music.
Mrs. Potiphar has to be one of the most loath-able musical villains. Not because she's terrible at being evil, but because she basically sexually assaults Joseph and GETS AWAY WITH IT!
Why is that scene even most replayed bit?
@@ashleigh255 because her husband barely does anything besides be a rich snob in all his scenes, that IS more or less how she gets away with her crime anyway.
Even more fucked up as in the bible she accuses Joseph of raping her.
We watched this at school lol
Same!
I'm doing this as my school play.

same
I watched this with my class in Year 2. My friend even remembers me staring and laughing because they had revealing outfits. Lol.
Me and the rest of the class are performing Joseph tonight! IM THE NARRATOR! Likes for Luck!
So how'd it go?
I know know you posted this 3 years ago but I really hope it went well for you all. I had the absolute best days of my school life learning, rehearsing and performing this musical with my class in 2008. I played Dan!
We did this play in year 6 and I played him and it turns out he’s just my constant mood
“Jospeh was taken to Egypt”

Andrew Lloyd Webber characters would fit right in in the JoJo universe
"JOJO JOSEPH!"
Wasn't he already in Egypt
i got the role of potiphar for my school production of this. so excited. im also one of the brothers
hulk fan So did I :) good luck
wow thanks man. same to you.

I love this musical, but I just noticed that at 4:12 she places the cigarette into her mouth twice 😂
oh yeah
Indigo Fisher-Rhodes
Yes! Strangely that how people smoke.
Continuity error I guess
It was a different time in filming. While it was a thing to discourage children with cigarettes it wasn't as railed against in media as hard as it is today.
I’ve got this on dvd and I absolutely LOVE watching this
Pause at 2:30, there's a guy behind Joseph out right staring at his arse 😂😂
FUNNY AS FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK
3:19 it happens again
Can you blame him?
That's Michael Small, who plays Zebulun in the film.
I watched this movie when I was a kid. Maybe this is why I’m bisexual.
HAD THIS EXACT REALIZATION TONIGHT
I can also confirm that this movie turned me bi I’m pretty sure
same
I was in a production when I was a kid and I’m biromantic asexual now so I can confirm XD
holy shit i get it now
I love Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat
Same!
Except for this part
2:03 When you realise you lost your consent form for a trip to a theme park
Nah it's 3:59
2:03 when you lose it, 3:59 when your teachers do not give you a new one and stuck at school being beaten up by 4 year olds pretending to be Spider-Man
BEST. NUMBER. EVER. I would always mimic the three guys behind Potifar
imagine naming your child “potiphar”
Potiphar’s wife Is really the mommy dom representation I needed
This film was my life as a kid!!! We had it on video
Potiphar’s wife reminds me of the Evil Queen in Snow White
Idk why I love how the narrorator sings chapter 39’
He looks like the slug from monsters inc
Brandon Cindric mean you do
+Harvey batman don't be mean...plz ;-;
Brandon Cindric ROZ OMG I NOW ONLY SEE THAT

Lol
2:40 that was kinda my entire reaction to this scene.
Potiphar goes fucking hard
throwback to when i was in the chorus for a high school production of this show
My cousins and I used to all watch this when we were little. I knew the seduction scene made me feel a certain type of way I couldn’t pinpoint. I’m in my 20s and I still blush watching it.
there should be more movies like this , I love the style ! very musical
That's what you normally get from a musical...
Cant believe my teachers let me watch this in primary school when i 9 😂😂😂

1:46 Am I the only one still thinking how did they getaway with showing children this?
IMO, it's wrong to show this to youngsters, as well as other adult content. 😢 Certain bible stories should only be shared at the appropriate age (of course, this musical.... well, it is what it is).
Kids will learn, see and hear enough when they're older. Sadly, nowadays, some people want to push adult content onto kids too soon... because, by trying to make it OK to expose minors to sex, violence, vulgarity, adult entertainment, etc., those people think they'll feel better about their own thoughts & actions. 😢
These days, it's also really sad that some people don't want children to just BE CHILDREN and enjoy an "innocent" childhood.
It's disturbing the things that are allowed in schools, in entertainment (incl. video "games"), advertisements, etc. 😢
Society is going downhill making debauchery, violence, lewdness and rudeness seem colorful, fun and acceptable. 😢
I'm not saying to make kids believe in a false reality... but, everyone should be promoting and living by a better standard of manners, integrity, morals, ethics and CLASS. 🙏🙂💕
@@nandep2149 your opinion. I respectfully disagree. I don’t think kids need to be exposed to R rated content, but to some mature themes in a neutral, informative non-taboo way? Absolutely. Not discussing every day albeit more adult issues and making them “taboo” is what causes so many problems to begin with, and perpetuates a cycle of kids growing up to be confused and often hateful as adults toward others with conflicting opinions, beliefs, and values. And this scene in particular waters down what is going on to the extreme. Perfect way to hint at the facts of the story without showing or saying too much for all ages.
@@trinabina3900 I disagree. Kids won't grow up confused or hateful just because they don't watch sex and violence at a young age. Parents are perfectly capable of teaching them well and raising educated kids w/healthy mindsets without exposing them to all that TOO SOON. There's plenty of time for children to learn more about it after a respectable age. Let children be children for a while.
@@nandep2149 I don’t think they need to be exposed to graphic violence or sex. I’m referring to a rational yet simple explanation or illustration of certain topics in the world considered by many to be “adult in nature” that children would understand. The depiction in this video is one good example of what I’m talking about. You may disagree with even something like this but I’m not referring to exposing children to R rated content. They don’t need to know all the specifics of everything to grasp the basics of what’s going on. It’s fine, I mean I have my opinion and you have yours. I raise my children as I feel suit, and you do the same.
@@trinabina3900 Agree to disagree. 👍 Each parent(s) will draw the line as they see fit and decide when their child is ready for advanced information.
