Lyrics
Close ev’ry door to me,
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light.
Do what you want with me,
Hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime
And torture my night.
If my life were important i
Would ask “will I live or die?”
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world.
Close ev’ry door to me,
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel are never alone
For I know I shall find
My own peace of mind,
For I have been promised
A land of my own.
Close ev’ry door to me,
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light.
Just give me a number
Instead of my name,
Forget all about me
And let me decay.
I do not matter,
I’m only one person
Destroy me completely,
Then throw me away.
If my life were important I
Would ask “will I live or die?”
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world.
Close every door to me,
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For we know we shall find our own piece of mind
For we have been promised, a
Land of our own

In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

Who’s here 2024???😍
Me
Me cause this is my new favorite musical!
When you realize that this guy, whom you’ve been watching since you were 5, voiced Shang’s singing voice in Mulan and you never knew that until you were today years old 😐😐😐👏🏽👏🏽
pєαchєsαndpєppєrs well now i know too lmao
Just the singing voice, I think
Nina Bandy nah, look it up on google
pєαchєsαndpєppєrs yeah Bd Wong is the speaking
Donny is only singing voice
Nina Bandy ohhhhh okay
The note Donny Osmond hits on the word “shall” at the end is the hottest thing I’ve ever seen a guy do
HAHAHAHAHHA
Lowkey same 🤦♀️😭
I dont know. Hearing the final note of Made of Stone in Hunchback of Notre Dame is pretty great.
guys do hot things???
Just a theatre kid YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE LIVE VERSION THAT HE DID AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL BECAUSE HE NAILS IT AND ITS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE SONG
Dropped in to see Donny blow this song out of the water again.
It gives me the same chills as the first time I heard it. His performance as Joseph is a gift; an absolute treasure!
Agree - I was lucky to see him perform Joseph in person. So incredible.
I've seen several other actors try to do this song, but not a single one of them has had the sheer unadulterated talent to convey the sorrow, the loneliness, the desperation and the faith that Donny conveys. His performance is nuanced in faith to the character... the others are just narcissistic pretenders.This.. this is pure service to the MUSIC.
Yeah
But I also really got chills when Lee Mead sang it.
Donny sings to God ..relaying it in 2000s
yesssssss
The original version for me, in its concept stage version, when the song lacked one of the verses for me is the best. This version is a close second.
Who else still watches this in 2020?
Me - compared it with the other later version - I still prefer this one.
Arlyn Alvior-Guese Same
Blessing Jordan me he’s so talented and fit xx
The one who portrayed this role - was it in Britain? Good voice but physically disproportionate- sorry no offense, but just looking at the total package that Mr. Donny was.
Me. When they close every door due to coronavirus.
People make fun of the Osmonds but this family is talented beyond
When I was younger I really wished I was one of those kids
Donny the best Joseph ever buts his heart and soul into it and man that last note sends chills down my spine evert me I here it
I feel like this is a great song to represent how people with depression and other disorders feel. Worthless and unknowing of their value or destiny.
That's why Donny Osmond was able to do this character well. He has gone through alot including hitting rock bottom and face serious depression. And that's why his performance only got better from there because he became that older man in the end that learned about his past and forgave it. Even though he wish he could escape his prison and live a normal life. But he couldn't just leave the show biz because it's all him and his family really new.
How true
Except with less hope.
He still has hope, because of god’s promise.
In Depression god disappears.
And you are surrounded by creepy singing children. 😝
@@margicates553 silly person
The same thing goes for abuse victims.
"Do what you want with me
Hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime
And torture my night"
As a Jewish person, hearing this song is so special. It sounds like a prayer we would sing in synagogue.
I love synagogue chant.
I dont remember which prayer it was exactly, but one Rosh Hashanah the chazzan used this tune and I did a double take.
It was great, but I've never seen it happen again
@@intrestedinallthings Avenu Malkeinu?
@@mayag224 I really don't remember. It was a while ago
That “shall find” at 4:10 is 👌🏻
His voice is most definitely a gift from God. His articulation is so good that I don't need to read the lyrics to know what he was singing.
Right. He enunciates so .well
My husband took me to see this show in Chicago back in 1995. We went shortly after something tragic had happened to me
Ironically every time I’ve gone through a trial in life this musical somehow pops up.
Just lost a job a couple of weeks ago and wouldn’t you know today when I was visiting my mom she had this soundtrack playing
I knew it was Donny Osmond in the Masked Singer, and definitely after he implied that he was in this musical. One of my favs growing up.
It may be because he was the first I saw, but no other Joseph comes close to Donny for me. Unbelievable.
He was the first I saw too
I love how we can see his diaphragm move as he sings
Donny has the voice of an angel 👼🏼 such a legend xxx
I don't use the word PERFECTION very often. This is a rare occasion when I must!
He definitely wasn't bad looking I must say. I love his voice too 💜

I get goosebumps whenever they do the a cappella part.
Crazy thing--he's entering cold. Most renditions have a 4 bar intro so that the soloist can pick up the key. He had to remember it based on the final chord of the transitioning song. Wicked hard to land reliably! But it also adds depth to the song too.
Donny’s voice is as smooth as butter! And this song keeps getting me No Way Out from Brother Bear vibes.
Donny is the best Joseph i have ever seen no one can be a better Joseph than Donny his voice and acting it just brilliant his family is talented he is one good looking Joseph he is a gift to all of us
Donny, singing, "Forget all about me...hate me and laugh at me" and other personal lyrics, which he truly went through after his youth before staying true to his beliefs and making an amazing comeback. And Joseph, having been a faithful servant to Potiphar, betrayed by Potiphar's wife, went to prison and remained faithful, was called out due to his prophetic, inspired dreams, saved Egypt and his family, forgiving his deceitful brothers...truly a foreshadowing of our Savior, and becoming one the great patriarchs. I love him, and Donny's portrayal of him. Thank you God, Joseph, Donny, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
AMEN
Daniel- exactly
Well said
I always said the same thing that the story of Joseph was a foreshadowing of the story of Jesus
Hauntingly beautiful. Donny’s God-given talent is mesmerizing, no matter how many times I hear him sing. Bravo!

Think this song is sad? Read the novel "Night". That period of history showcased the lowest humanity has ever sunk.
"Behind me, I heard the same man asking: ‘For God’s sake, where is God?’ And from within me, I heard a voice answer; ‘Where is He? This is where - hanging here from this gallows…'"
I LOVE THIS SONG
DONNY IS THE ONLY REAL JOSEPH IN MY HEAD
Okay for one he is gorgeous ❤️ & for two that ending.. the part where he says “for we know we shall find” at the very end gives me chills & I find myself replaying it several times before I’m over it. He’s the best.
Agreed!
Arguably one of the finest vocal performances of all times. Brings me to tears and gives me chills every time I hear it.
Breathing from his Intercostals --- and full voice --- PERFECTION!!! He always could sing --- seeing him in Vegas was astoundingly the closest thing to Elvis Iv'e ever seen!!!
I keep replaying the first 30 seconds, his bod has me screaming! And my fangirling gets worse as the video goes on...
Donny's voice is just incredible! The enunciation, the tone, the emotion. Insane talent

“Just give me a number instead of my name.” Sad when you think of what this could be a reference to. 😢
What reference?
Did you mean the Holocaust?
@@susanbazinet9664 Yes
Good call. I didn't think of that. I wonder if Tim Rice meant it that way. Interesting.
@@susanbazinet9664 Team Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber intended it as a deliberate reference.
The one song I regret never singing on stage when given the chance
what happened
i just never did, i had the chance but i never did it and i regret it
Damn it! Last year, I got to star in the choir fro it with some of my school... the did who did this was literally amazing!
Why not create a Karaoke version with your friends?? Posting this song to LinkedIN.

This is one hell of an amazing song. I love how as a song about faith it’s not just keep praying to god and things will work out, in this it captures both the dangers in trying to follow one’s beliefs and stay true to them despite everything trying to force them to abandon said values, the humility required to admit one doesn’t have all the answers and may never have them, the uncertainty about what God’s plan is and how it will reveal itself and what sacrifices in life will be required from you for a better tomorrow you may not see on Earth. It’s stuff like this which are why these stories of faith are so powerful and inspirational no matter who you are, even if the God of Joseph isn’t yours or if you’re unsure there even is a God
👌🔥🔥

That was pretty much perfection and that's that.
I met Donnie Osmond when he preformed this play because my dad drove the kids involved
Donny is the perfect Joseph.
I saw him in the Canadian national touring company of Joseph,he was so talented and he sang from his soul this song gives me the chills.
This is un-ironically a master class in acting.
It’s almost like Donny was made to play this role
I remember when it was announced that he was being cast in the role and I thought, "perfect fit."
not gonna lie, he probably was.
This song right now is a perfect explanation of how I'm feeling during this Coronavirus issue. Close Every Door to me....but we're never alone!!
Courtney Mulkins exactly I agree
This song is perfect for the coronavirus time. But, God is with us
and ebolvid 2k14 too
Same!!
Okay, there's no doubt that Donny Osmond is just, the best thing ever. Not doubting that - but guys, 4:19. He looks at the camera for a split second.
I noticed that!!
:GASP: HE DOES
Donny is an amazing talent.
This song gave me chills when I heard Donny sang this song 24 years ago and still thrills me now when I listen to it! I have been listening to him since he started performing back in the 60’s and 70’s as well! An Amazing talent then and now❤️
Awesome Donny....
I grew up on this movie especially being in Catholic school. Try to show it to friends and they aren't into it until they realized he voiced Shang in Mulan. Facepalm.
What a version! This blew me away when I first watched it, Well done Donny!
i stand by that donny is the perfect joseph

So funny but true LOLOLOL
I thought the same haha 😂

This song is GOOSEBUMP-RAISINGLY BEAUTIFUL. It's a thrill, no matter how many times you listen to it.
saw this musical (with Donnie as the lead) when I was maybe 8 years old. I never got into it and now MANY years later....I appreciate all of it.
His diaphragm control is incredible
Underrated
This song hits different today…
This role was perfect for Donny
Donny will always be the best Joseph
I love donnys voice as well! Sounds exactly like an angel xx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is the best stage/movie musical performance EVER!!
Wonder if hes watching
This has been my favorite Joseph song since I was five
Just perfect
He nailed this song
He's amazing. What a spectacular performance!!☺😍
Best song my favourite other actors can't compete
Actually he can just get away through the gap between the iron bars 😆
This is still my favorite version of the song compared to the other ones that are still available on iTunes. I was so pissed when they took it off, and while Donny Osmond sounds louder than the choir and instrumentation in this video, this is the closest I can get to my favorite version for now.
I had to sing this in class back in high school for choir ... Man times flies
I got chills.
Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
As a kid I never appreciated how buff he is! And I know it's just a show but he could probably slide through those bars lol.
Beautiful...
no matter how many times i watch this i still get chills donny was so good as joseph
Dony will always be Joseph for me
chills. literal chills.
First watched him when he was a little boy with his brothers. Damn he looks fine here!!!!!!!!!!
Strange to think this film is now 20 years old this year!
I love this song. Its sad at the same time
classic performance
I saw this performance in Chicago! It was breathtaking!

Mmm good choice
Gorgeous!!
Donny was great in this musical !
My college's theatre program just put on this musical and the young man who played Joseph gave a performance to rival Donny Osmond's.
RebekahAnn Rash was it filmed at all? Cos I want to see that performance.
@@DietEllie No, I wish. I really wish it had been. I saw it twice and would have gone again if it hadn't been sold out.
I have to sing this song for my play on Friday wish me luck
This is especially appropo today in light of the current Israel situation.
Powerful song.
Donny is my favorite Joseph with Michael Damion coming in a close second
This used to be my least liked song but listining to it again years later I actually love it
Jacob's faith in his God is a marvellous witness. Genesis 37-50 is one of the most glorious parts of the bible.
Agreed! My favourite part of Genesis.
What this had to do with the song?
I'm reading it to my kids now and they've never payed such close attention while reading scriptures.
Sad song but still great
Me every time my family leaves me or I’m alone (Ok but Donny was absolutely amazing and this is my favorite song in Joseph)
3:50 is my favorite part
I know I shall find my own peace of mind! For I have been promised a land of my own!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Soon we will be able to find peace after the crazy thing that is happening ❤
Me in lockdown: KEEP THOSE I LOVE FROM MEEE
Legit tho lol
goosebumps!~ EVERY DARNED TIME! God that minor key! mmmmm perfection!
i played Joseph in my final school year show, signing this song infront of 100+ people is not easy i can say from experience
Yeah my school is about to start rehearsals and I got the part of Joseph pretty keen. Except for this song haha
With practice it really just comes from the heart as corny as that sounds, you’ll be fine
