    It's been brought to my attention that the BCW 6 Drawer Card Catalog has had it's price raised to $118.99 since I released this video. I was very disappointed to see that. I understand these boxes are very expensive to ship and that is part of their cost, but at essentially $120...
    Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the price hike.

      Yeah I was commenting on another video whos topic was apropo to this ones. I did the math for the comment and you can buy 50k worth of card storage, 10 of BCWs basic 5k card boxes, for the same price as 1 of the Card Catalog.
      Im also looking for, have been for a while, comic storage. Their plastic bins are 35 bucks each, versus their cloth ones being 15 and betting the cardboard ones being like 3 or 4. Any company that produces plastic storage solutions REALLY need to rethink their pricing. With 3D printing becoming so affordable there is quickly going to become zero reason to pay 10+ dollars for these kinds of things considering if someone designed the files the likely cost of materials to print would be less than 5 bucks.

    First of all! YOU ARE A HERO in making the original video of comparing the two, and the company is a legend for listening and coming up with this! There were a couple days where I was debating how difficult it would be to design my own product, etc.
    Honestly I think the price is fair. It’s the shipping that puts it over $100 that hurts 🤕
    I see it being a feature thing being hard to move or “topple” if you will…yeah 6 drawers make sense but wonder if 2x2 would’ve been more practical or even a 1x3 🤔

    I'm honestly a bit shocked at the price of these. The MTechCave catalogues you talked about before are $139.99 for a 12 row of nearly the same dimensions (14 1/8" and 14 3/8", for MTC and BCW respectively). Obviously, it's worth mentioning the time for building the MTC catalogues but like...for $60 less? that seems worth skipping over the BCW's drawers.

    I’ve given far too much of my personal time thinking about just buying this product, due to the price, and what I’ve come up with is that shipping is more this product so damn expensive. Shipping for BCW to send to distributors or to stores. Shipping for distributors or stores to then send to buyers. It’s the tcg storage equivalent of a 2010 tumblr page, shipping shipping shipping!! And idk the more I think about it I kinda feel like this is super niche product might be worth it? Thanks for the video btw.

    • @nickguppy
      @nickguppy Před měsícem

      A ton of the reason is the shipping. As a BCW distributor, shipping the 3200 bins has SUCKED. They factored that in here and while it might be less good for consumers, its very appreciated for those of us that are distributors and would prefer not to lose money since everything has to have free shipping with Amaz*on controlling the industry.

    I'm using BCW cardboard 800s and 1600s in a dresser. I like being able to take them out and work at a table. I think my collection would need to expand significantly to justify the cost for this but it does look really nice.

    • @nickguppy
      @nickguppy Před měsícem

      Having personally switched, these are SOOOO much better. The 3200's are incredibly annoying with having to flip the lid under the feet. The 1600's solved this and added a handle but these are even better. But they aren't cheap and obviously if one has already invested in one setup then switching is difficult.

    Great review! Definitely an interesting product, and the cube shelf question was exactly what came to mind first, thanks for covering! Would be super cool if someone made a 9 drawer that exactly fits a cube. I’m currently using a 9 bottle divider in a single cube with card board trays, but the mdf material is thick so it’s limiting the cubby holes. Would probably have to be a non-stackable, single unit to maximize inner drawer space.

    $130cad isn't too bad. Plastic seems sturdy, design is decent.
    Usually cost is materials, design, and machining. As well as shipping materials and product. Spectre here on CZcams has a good video explaining the costs of making plastic figures, this helps understand costs when it comes to anything made with plastic from figures, to miniatures, to things like this.

    If they build one, what's the next one up? We tend to forget they are in a business to make money. Not to make us all happy. Like the different deck boxes I have? The best one is still Ultra Pro Tower or Satin Tower. They could not come up of anything new, except making it glitter or made from recycled materials. If only Ultimate Guard quality instead of Ultra Pro. Before CNC machines and 3D printing, I made one from plywood for bolts and screws. As a craftsman, I made my own library card style cabinet with drawers for my MTG cards. BCW made 6 drawers stackable. For the cost, I came out a winner with 24 drawers for less what BCW is asking for.

    I had 4 of the 3,200 count storage bins and needed additional storage. I had been eyeing the Card Catalog option, like you that was what was my ideal solution. I was to a point where I had to get more storage now and couldn't put it off any longer. I ended up deciding on getting an additional (4) 3,200 count bins, simply because I agreed with your reasoning on the price. I couldn't justify spending double the cost, especially when I would need several of them.
    The cost disparity gets even bigger if you buy 4 of the 3,200 count bins at one time, the price drops from $44.99 each to $33.74 each. Which means you're basically getting one for next to nothing. Not to mention you get free shipping on orders over $100 -
    I am fortunate that I live close to where BCW is, so I can just place and order and arrange to pick it up in person which I have done on small orders.

    • @nickguppy
      @nickguppy Před měsícem +1

      Without getting into specifics, since the distributor pricing on these is *LESS*, you could probably work with a distributor on a bulk order of these and save significantly. Why they didn't build any of that into the volume pricing like their other items is odd but I was told it was due to the bulky nature of the products and the fact that they have to ship individually (other items have a carton amount that is equal to the price break such as 4 for the 3200's).

  • @LordJaroh
    @LordJaroh Před měsícem

    Those do look nice, and look like they might fit in my bookshelf arrangement nicely (might be too deep. I will have to measure).
    Hopefully they do a slight future redesign with lowered edges on the drawer (so they aren't so tall on the sides as you said). It'd be interesting to see a smaller version of these that could be assembled and have handles and such for portability (I have large planar cubes that would love to live in cases like this to be able to transport to people's houses for playing), but I do agree that too many cards would make them unwieldy. But maybe having a 4 row modular version might help.
    And yes, the price is quite excessive for what you get. Sure, it is fancy, but it is missing the bells and whistles that would truly put it over the top and worth its price. My knee-jerk reaction is that I would pay $60-$65ish for something of this nature (less if smaller of course). I would definitely not pay $100 US for it.

    • @nickguppy
      @nickguppy Před měsícem

      I had the same thoguht about lowering the side for the middle portion but then that limits the ability to open it any amount you want and it to hold steady without sagging... so that doesn't really work. As for portability, I would not trust using this for a portable solution, its just not designed for that. As for the price, its expensive, I just think everything is getting more expensive and these suck to ship cross country and they tried to plan that in. Maybe later on the price comes down, I do not know. But the distributor pricing is less and its appreciated.

    When these were in preorder I remember them having pretty good discounts on buying multiples ie. 2-3 come in at like $75 for example or something like that, I see now all those bulk rates are completely removed in addition to the price hike. Perhaps this is to counteract their random coupon code discounts. Even at $100 its a tough ask, hopefully the success for it leads to more innovation and competiton from competing storage companies... It is just a plastic box after all...Not like these things are nice clear acrylic with brass hardware. I've tried finding similar sized acrylic boxes from Target home decor for example but the dimensions are just ever so slightly off. Based on cost it seems totally doable to make them from nicer materials at that price point.

I can go to my local cardshop and buy 12 4 row 3200 count cardboard boxes for $102 plus Tax which would make it about $110 in my area. That's two boxes per row on this thing.

      Unfortunately I think you are forgetting these are made in china and shipped overseas and then shipped to a distributor and then to you, thats a lot of shipping. Thats why large bulky items just have to cost more. There is far more than $50 into making it and all that shipping. WIth that said if you find a distributor, and especially if you want multiple there is probably a chance they could work with you on a discount to get it at least slightly closer to what you are stating. @@nickguppy Unfortunately I think you are forgetting that it doesn't matter where it comes from. This is an American company not a Chinese company. If this was an Australian company or something then it'd be a totally different story but it's not. My job as the customer isn't to cover your inefficiency in costs. That's your job as a company. If 80% of your cost is shipping then you need to re-evaluate your model and do it better. I'm not gonna pay $20 for a slice of bread just because it came from Russia.
      Edit: It's also $99 on their own website that I would have to go pick up myself at their own warehouse. So that means it costs them like $60 per unit to be shipped from China? Cuz the materials and labor for this aren't even that expensive. They really are terrible at cost management then.
