RAW: How A River Wave Forms Part 2

  • From start to finish, this video shows how a small Creek is damed up by a sand berm with a high tide and big swell. Next, the water begins to seep over the Sand berm and form a trench. The rest of the work is done by gravity. The waves that are formed for the outflow of water are very dangerous. The people in this video are very experienced and know when the rapids are too dangerous to cross or be in. If you are ever at the beach when this happens I advise you to keep a safe distance between yourself and this body of water. I have seen too many people get very close to drowning because they do not understand the raw power of this situation.

When I was young, I suppose around 10 yo, there was a creek about a mile back in the woods. It wasnt much of a creek, but after a really hard rain there was one spot that would fill up and make about a 4ft deep pool that we all used to swim in. We rode our bikes back there one day after an especially hard rain and were having a blast. I jumped in from a small embankment beside the creek and the front of my foot landed on a large rock and when I came down on it my Achilles Tendon was torn from the back of my leg. I had to scoot my self back home using my good foot on my bike, it was brutal. I wore a cast on my leg for 8 months after they reattached the tendon. Fortunately your body is very resilient at that age and I havent had any problems with my leg later in life. The scary part is how far back in the woods we were. Had it happened in someones front yard it would have been no big deal. It took me hours to make it back, I was in considerable pain and my foot was just dangling.

I always wondered exactly how this river break formed (from watching both you and JOB). I knew it was a build up of water but always thought it came mainly from the river. Now thanks to this video and explanation i realise it's because of a mixture of events, mainly based around the high tide. (If I've taken this up wrong please let me know). As someone from Ireland, we don't really get a buildup of water like this anywhere, as shorebreak waves like this don't really exist. I really love seeing how you analyze the conditions/waves also and that this video shows how it evolves over time. As a lifeguard/surfer/new skimmer, i can appreciate how understanding these conditions helps you make the most of them. #quality
