Interesting video.. We have stayed in some dodgy airbnbs, so know what you say about bad experiences is spot on. I am an Airbnb super host with 5 star rating for our 2 bedroom fully self contained apartment that is attached to our house. We only have it available for Airbnb when we will be at home. When we set it up we did it to reflect what we would like to stay in, where we would expect it to be a 5 star property - right down to variety of appliances, quality of linen, towels, comfortable beds and lounges, etc etc. Airbnb changed their Terms and Conditions in 2020 ( I think). Prior to that time, Airbnb used to say that guests need to leave the property in a “clean and tidy condition”. When they updated their T&Cs it now says to leave the property “in the condition you found it”. I think that does present some problems. What I do is explain in our paperwork and listing on the platform what we expect from them to fulfil Airbnb’s “ in the condition you found it”. I say that we do not expect guests to clean the bathroom or sweep or vacuum floors as any of that mess is incidental mess. That’s why we have a cleaner. We also “fog” and sanitise the apartment after each guest - including every light switch, door, cupboard, drawer handle etc. What we do expect is for guests to address intentional mess - eg. If you use an appliance, crockery etc, then wash and put them away and put the garbage out. I guess in summary, even though we haven’t spent time staying in the apartment ourselves, our set up reflects what we would like when we stay somewhere. Overall, from our perspective Airbnb is a great platform, but unfortunately, not all hosts set up properties to an equal standard. On the cancellation point you made….if a host cancels a booking, then they are penalised by Airbnb - including blocking the calendar for that period of cancelled booking. There are 2 ways hosts can set up for bookings. One is an instant booking - that’s where hosts can get caught out, if they haven’t kept up with monitoring their calendar for a year ahead. The other method is a Request booking, where the host has to be approve the booking. This is safer from a Host’s point of view, as you have a chance to check your calendar before approving. Anyhow….just a few thoughts from a host perspective. All the best with your travels. Sounds wonderful.
Budget Tip for airfare: Avoid long haul flights in the Summer and Christmas time. Get to the general area of the world you want to be before summer starts, and resume long haul after summer.

Absolutely. That’s what I plan to do when I retire in a yr or two. Avoiding crowds is THE biggest benefit of being retired I’d say. But I hope to be able to mix in with some business class about every third trip to make the long hauls less of a dread 😅

We spent a year traveling the globe and thought that what we did was reasonably priced and sustainable, but when we got home we got a jolt of things around the house that needed attention. 3 or our AC units went out, so at $6500 a peice it hit the wallet pretty hard. My point is, that traveling abroad can be a lot cheaper than just staying at home. At least this is true for us.

I actually enjoy the lower cost countries a lot, so I’m totally fine spending 6 months in Latin America or Southeast Asia to allow me to spend time in Europe and the US. It’s still a few years away for me, but I’m enjoying my time now with some good trips soon. 😊
You're like us in that way, we prefer the lower cost places as they tend to have more culture and surprises.

Absolutely loved this video guys! We're not quite there yet on the retirement front - but we have lots of fab role models, including yourselves to inspire us ;), so ***THANK YOU***!. Our retirement goal is to spend 6 months travelling and the other 6 months at 'home' (yeah in Scotland but during 'our summer' time!). Our kids have now flown the nest (sharing a lovely mortgage free flat i.e. part of their inheritance near their work and study Uni) and we have JUST (i.e. yesterday) paid off our home mortgage (woo hoo!) - so huge milestone achievement ticked off for us and onto the emergency fund next. Keep up the great work guys and make sure Georgia gets it (we're drumming this into our kids now as we so, so wish we had this knowledge in our youth!).

Great video, nice to see an older style video that offers inspiration and advice. We currently work towards a 4 month block budget, allows us to change direction if necessary. Me and my partner also LOVE our "walk n talks' it's the best medicine for any stress, depression, anxiety etc. Even alone just stick a podcast on and go.
My favourite saying is "you can have ANYTHING not EVERYTHING".

Great video, as always! This short format was perfect today as we battled cleaning up after a MASSIVE rainstorm in San Miguel de Allende last night. And even though it is rainy season here, one of our tips would be to travel during shoulder and off seasons for great travel deals and experiences. It is now low season here, which seems crazy since the weather is typically glorious and all the rain turns the dessert green.
House sitting is one of the best ways to save money on travel. We have stayed in some beautiful homes over the last 3-4 years. Just be flexible what areas you're open to visiting. We are finishing up a 35 day House sit in Singapore at a beautiful 2 bedroom 2 bath condo with great amenities. It would be thousands of dollars and way out of our budget if we had to rent this place. Happy travels!
How do you find these house sits?
Would you please give some details as to how others can do this. My wife and I are looking to retire in a year and a half and are trying to decide if we want to move to Europe or try slow traveling first. I believe our budget is lower than most and house sitting sounds like a great way to stretch the budget. Thanks for your time and I hope to find out the countries you have been house sitting in.

It all sounds good but a bit of a faff. You can register your details online with various companies. We're currently coming upto month four of homelessness but in a good way after selling our house and taking our time before buying another. We rent week by week.
Sarah licking her lips there after Take II ... 😅 As for my budget saving tips, flights on cheaper dates/times, public transit, few costly touristy excursions, eat at cook shops or cook my own food - never eat at fancy restaurants, enjoy doing local free stuff (like grocery shopping in markets, visiting local artisans, carpentry or stone mason shops for eg) or lower price points (National parks, museums etc) and I stay w locals. Win win as it puts $ in their pockets and I learn about authentic life wherever I am traveling and I make precious wonderful friends. 😊

Thanks for another great video! For me, my first and last monthly budget would be the most due to airfare. Once we’re there, things are cheaper but the transportation costs to SE Asia are high.

Singapore became the cheapest place we ate. The Hawker centers have incredible food made for locals.....Also a memorable experience...

We travel often super cheap ALWAYS less than 3000 for a couple. EZ PZ. Even Europe. We stay in the less expensive countries like Albania Armenia Poland Bulgaria Romania Hungary Georgia Montenegro...all kinds and similar. Great places. Never pay alot!!
Love this! My house goes on the market in two weeks so I'm in limbo for now but I get my inspiration from you and a few other CZcamsrs to keep moving ahead.. I'm also curious as to when and where you were in Canada since that's where I currently live?
I think that a lot of people get fixated on the FIRE acronym and then subcategorising themselves as FAT or LEAN or BARISTA or COASTAL FIRE, etc. I once described us as A LA CARTE FIRE to someone and we do very similarly to what you do, just without the slow travel. We’d love to do more longer travels, but with the toddler and pets, it’s just not feasible. I think a lot of people find it very hard to budget for an entire year with variable months, which is why many probably set a monthly budget of X. We try and do quarterly assessments of where we’re at, so that we can reign in to recover from an expensive period or prepare for one. And of course, having that good old contingency fund.
The quarterly assessment is a good way to go, then you know how you're fixed for the rest of the year.

Like when you give insights into finances required to do full time travel, forever saving concerned you can never achieve enough! Is there a particular reason why you sold everything and not keep/rent out your house, so that you would stay on top of inflation say if you were everyto return to uk in older age?

We have just come home after 18 months full time travel and used the Wise card. Never had an issue with it, wherever we went.
Do you guys have kids? If so, how do you reconcile travelling many months over the year vs having to be situated close to your kids/grandkids? That would be my biggest concern (when we retire) as much as I want to do exactly what you guys are doing.
Hi guys. We’ve been following you for a few months now and we’ve almost caught up with your full back catalogue of videos. We’re starting our own indefinite travels next month, beginning in Athens. (I hope you both look back on your Athens experience fondly now, but it must have been stressful at the time!)
We have a question: now that the pandemic is over and more people are travelling again, are you finding it more challenging to find decent accommodation for a whole month at a time at short notice? We’re planning a similar strategy to yours, ie stay at least 28 days in one location and get deep discounts on AirBnB. But leaving bookings to the last minute to maximise flexibility of destination presumably comes with the trade off of fewer available properties that meet your needs? We’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on this. In the meantime, keep up the great work. We look forward to your video drop every week 😊

We are looking to retire abroad and perhaps do some slow travel but I am concerned about inflation and our dollar being devalued and not going far enough. I realize it might take more effort than it's worth to you but are you able to elaborate on some of your travels and what you have found as far as cost of living?
