  • What started as a chat on healthcare justice between Einstein anatomy lab partners grew into a town hall event at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, featuring U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who gave a short talk before answering students’ questions about healthcare policy in the United States. Reise Sample, Sarah Kellner, and Joseph Tharakan represented three groups onstage: Students for a National Health Plan, Medical Students for Choice and Reproductive Justice, and the Family & Social Medicine Interest Group.
    The town hall was also open to audience questions, and they came from physicians, researchers, and medical students on such topics as physician compensation under universal healthcare, criminal justice, addiction issues, the lack of healthy food options in the Bronx, and access to healthcare for undocumented residents.

      In Canada, it is illegal to have private insurance companies that compete with the government provided, 24/7, on demand model of healthcare. We walk into a specialist/ Dr's office, lab, ER, family practitioner's office with a plastic card that is registered with the province and our every healthcare need is cared for by world class nurses, doctors and surgical staff if necessary. No bills, no premiums, no different sources of funding, no insurance companies. Everyone is covered. I had hip replacement surgery recently and I walked out of the hospital with a hug and a bath reacher (so I didn't have to bend) from my physiotherapist. I would disagree with AOC on the issue of private insurance coverage. It remains overly complicated and open to unfair increases in premiums.

    Let me tell my experience in an emergency room. I had a fever a few years ago and I had to go to an emergency room, I won't name that hospital. When I got there they had checked me out, taken my temperature, my blood pressure, my pulse and along with other diagnosis, then sent me to a waiting room. I sat in a waiting room over 1.5 hour then the doctor came and gave me two Tylenols and sent me back home; all and all I have spent close to 3 hours in that emergency room. A week later I received a bill over $6000 for 2 Tylenols. Funny huh how the greatest nation on earth charged a patient of 6 grands for two Tylenols. When I got back home, I took two Advil every 4 hours 3 days straight and gotten better. Thank you.

But in this way we all help eachother - go to the doctor or a hospital nor a specialist nor an ambulance - no charge. Costs of socialized medical care are not monetary but nevertheless valuables : long waiting times, medicine deficits, doctors that don't really care about their patients, bribery. Check the historical examples of former socialist countries. Verify where the advancement in medical science and technology takes place.
      As Milton Friedman said : "[...] after the fall of communism everybody in the world agreed that socialism was a failure , everybody in the world, more or less, agreed that capitalism was a success . And every capitalist country deduced from that that what the West needs is ... more socialism" czcams.com/video/mKhfR8WC4Eo/video.html

It ends up saving the country money in the long term to have healthy people! Also better for the economy, for families etc. Net positive all around.

And why would danish doctors care less about their patient than an US doctor? they get paid their salary just like any other doctors. I dont know about waiting time in the US but i would't call it long in Denmark, you just go online and there is a page were you can see your doctors schedule and see what times are booked and what times are available, then you just select the time best suited for you. Normally you can get a time within the week, maybe the next week. Never heard about any form of medicine deficient in Denmark and on top of that you can get it for free or for a reasonable price depending on situation. To echo Finns point its a pretty smooth procedure to get a specialist and you absolutely have they right to choose another if you are displeased with the service. And just so you know there is big differences between communisme, socialisme and social democracies. In Denmark we have a capatalisme, we just choose to have certain things like healthcare, eduacation and childcare at a national level so everybody gets an equal chance to compete in the free market.
      In the US the system is setup by the rich and enforced by the rich, and they fuck over the poor every sigle day in every possible way they can for their own profit. If any form of media

Study history and you will know the ending to big government. It’s so horrific to see medical students no longer believe in the objective truth that life begins in conception and protecting that life is just a choice. They become doctors and they yield the power to choose who lives and who dies. Last time I checked, doctors do their best to save ALL lives - it was not just a matter of choice.

    • @hayley4466
      @hayley4466 Před 3 lety +5

      Equality means everyone gets the exact same thing regardless of whether it addresses their deficits or not (someone with $50,000 and someone with $1 in the bank both get $1000 because it is an equal amount), equity means each person gets what they individually need so everyone is on an even playing field (if everyone was to have $100,000 wealth, the person with $50,000 would get $50,000 and the person with $1 would get $99,999 because that is an equitable amount). Justice is having no one with only $1 in their bank in the first place by introducing policies and legislation that meet the needs of everyone in society.

    • @playarf
      @playarf Před 3 lety

      @@hayley4466 sorry, you’re confused at these terms. That is not the correct difference between equity and equality. Equality is a social term where rich vs poor should be treated equally irrespective of ability to pay. Meaning resources are distributed without any bias. Every day physicians like myself treat patients without any care for their ability to pay. We don’t check their insurance cards before treating them. They get the same treatment if they’re bilionaire or homeless, atleast in hospitals. Equity is a business term which has to do with financial stake in an enterprise, like stocks or shares. Meaning if I’m the owner of a practice, I have 100% equity in that practice. That is similar to you owning any business. Others don’t have any equity in that business. As a consumer of healthcare, in a non emergent situation, you’re free to choose whichever option you prefer. That

      @hayley4466 Před 3 lety +2

      I'm not confused, I'm a Registered Nurse and health equity, equality and justice was part of my studies and continues into my practice. My view is coming from living in New Zealand where we turn up to the GP or ED (or literally any type of medical facility) and don't need to bring any form of payment or proof of insurance as our health system is public and paid for through taxes (and almost no one has any type of health insurance because all it gets you is higher up on the wait list for surgeries such as joint replacements). Most of our healthcare is free and accessible by all (the largest cost is $5 for a prescription (insulin, contraceptives, anything prescribed by a doctor that is dispensed at a pharmacy) or $15 if prescribed by a specialist physician) so our health equality and equity issues are largely not financial and stem from a primary health and health promotion point of care rather than a "we won't even look at you if you cannot provide payment" point of care which seems more in line with what the USA is presenting.

    • @playarf
      @playarf Před 3 lety

      @@hayley4466 Equity and Equality are different terms. So is justice. Just because you took a course on them, it does not mean you are an authority in either of these esp. when your understanding of these terms is off. Justice is similar to equality - not equity. Equity is a financial term, equality is an ethical term and justice is a legal term. Yes, there can be overlap in specific situations, but the way AOC used it - it does not make any sense.
      As a commonwealth country, New Zealand, like Canada and the UK and a few others, have decided to pay for their healthcare expenses as part of tax collection. USA has not, with the exception of medicare (free healthcare for retirees, disabled and anyone over 65), and Medicaid (which is insurance for those who cant afford it). This policy is decided by the congress, and at times, by the president as an elected official by the people. The congress, elected by the people comprises of House of Representatives and Senate. Congress writes legislation, senate passes it and the president signs it - to break it down to you. AOC is a congresswoman among 500+ members (member of House of Representative). There are others, and they make a collective decision. AOC is what most would consider extreme left in U.S. politics. She is unlikely to have support of majority of the country. In her own party, there is a divide between extreme left and center-left Democrats like Joe Biden who do not believe in medicare for all. No, people in the U.S. aren't dying of 'no insurance', which is the biggest misconception I hear. They need to apply otherwise it would be provided for them at a discount from marketplace. A variety of options exist. And I already told you, there is no obstruction in care being provided to those who cant afford. Sometimes care provided at state hospitals and medicaid hospitals is better than private hospitals. Its the same physicians that staff all the hospitals. Take a look at NYU hospitals - VA, Bellevue, Tisch - VA is a government hospital, Bellevue is a city hospital, and Tisch is a private hospital. The care is provided by same doctors at these places without discrimination.

      The system would be funded in part by the savings obtained from replacing today’s inefficient, profit-oriented, private insurance companies - and the system-wide administrative waste they generate - with a single streamlined, nonprofit public payer. Such savings, estimated in 2017 to be about $500 billion annually, would be redirected to patient care.

    I am surprised and disappointed that there was only one question regarding the future pay for the potential doctors sitting in that room. I am a doctor. I understand fully the financial, mental and physical demands that being a surgeon in this society requires. I have news for you wide eyed medical students who think Medicare for all is going to bring you the professional and financial satisfaction that after 12 to 15 years of training should deliver. If you think the insurance companies are greedy, wait until some politician like AOC is in charge of determining what your worth is. The government doesn’t care that you went to school for over a decade, missed spring breaks, Christmas vacations, summer vacations, out on the town with friends, all in an effort to pass medical school exams, state and national exams, written and oral, etc,.. just to practice medicine, then to be told a plumber deserves more compensation than you. AOC didn’t finish pre-med because she wasn’t smart enough. She didn’t purse medicine because she realized how many years it takes to be a doctor in this country. All of those students sitting in that room will one day, if you are lucky enough to pass your USMLES and Board exams, will be on call, missing your family grow, will be sued in court and will have many weeks of 120 hr work weeks. Enjoy it now, students......I promise you, when you get that reimbursement check from Medicare after saving a persons life of which you spent hours managing and the check is in the amount of $76.81........You will think twice about selling yourself short.

      I think in cases of rape or mothers health it is important to have abortion available. And included under rape would be taxing advantage of immature women who are socially immature. But in cases where none of the above apply, women have to learn that sexual activity is not a place where women can have a throw away mentality towards pregnancy. It should be a given the voluntary sexual activity means you are accepting the consequences of your choices. And that it is not justifiable to expect that because you made a decision someone else must take care of the results, such as unwanted pregnancies or adoption of babies.
