    your arm movement for the parry-right is strangely large. My ancestor (who was a Ming Dynasty General) documented the "Four-Even-Stance" in detail, he described it as one of the most peculiar techniques of spear fighting, but fundamental. He wrote that the energy should not be generated externally by the arms as this would make his soldiers too tired, too quickly. The power comes from internal spiral energy, its a little bit of wrist and forearm (definitely no elbows involved), and mostly movement within the waist/core to generate energy through alternate compressions of the Gua. If there is lots of arm movement then the muscles of the arm will get fatigued, then you wont be able to parry effectively at all and will die.

    Can you swing the spear like a sword, or is that tactic just useless?

    • @kinnarawanderer
      @kinnarawanderer Před 4 lety

      To my understanding a small, brief swing can be applied as a feint or even a lightly discombobulating strike, but it should almost always be followed up with an actual point-first strike to serve any actual effect. One should be quick and careful when pulling that sort of maneuver because a blunt side strike with a spear is pretty easy to catch and counter.
      In choreographed performance art, less tactically focused, you might see such things more often- like chambering it over the shoulders and doing a full upper body circular swing or incorporating it into a tornado kick- but that's more of a bo-staff approach and likely doesn't have a realistic martial application when using a (typically more lengthy) spear.
      Remember to keep all armed sparring safe, friendly, and sporting!

    • @Finnv893
      @Finnv893 Před 4 lety +1

      Sure, but the cutting surface is smaller than let's say a Sha or a Ji's, the main advantage of a spear is speed, the typical weight of a spear head is 3 times lighter than the head of a ji or sha, maybe even 5 times lighter than a poleaxe or fork, less versatility but more point control.
