- Sacred Autonomous Royal Monastery of Saint Katherine of the Holy and God-Trodden Mount Sinai, is one of the oldest Monasteries in the world, built in the traditional location of the biblical Epiphanies to prophet Moses through the Burning bush & the Decalogue (10 Commandments) at Mt Sinai. The site is venerated by all Abrahamic religions & Recognized as world heritage by Unesco.
- The fortified compound, centering the Basilica & the Library, was constructed under patronage of Byzantine emperor Justinian i (mid 6th cent. CE), surrounding an earlier chapel built by St Helene, mother of Constantine the Great (early 4th cent. CE). Additional buildings & reconstructions where executed by Fatimids (10th cent. CE), Crusaders (12-13th cent. CE) & by Napoleon (18th cent. CE), during his middle eastern campaign.
- According to hagiographical sources, Catherine of Alexandria, was a noted scholar from noble origins, who became Christian around the age of 14, performed miracles & converted hundreds of people to Christianity (including Emperors wife), & was martyred at the age of 18, by Emperor Maxentius in early 4th Century CE. Based on tradition, her relics where transferred to Mt Sinai by Angels. Some scholars see analogy & parallels between the story of Catherine & Hypatia of Alexandria.
- The monastery houses a unique collection with some of the oldest icons existing, surviving Iconoclasm of 8th century. Considered invaluable for studies of Roman-Byzantine History & the development of Christian Iconography. The most notable are wooden panel icons executed in the Encaustic technique (Christ Pantocrator, St Peter, Virgin & Child, Nativity of the lord, Crucifixion of Christ). In addition, the oldest known icon of Christ Pantocrator, which later will serve as prototype for Byzantine Art (Hagia Sofia Mosaics, Fresco from church of the Holy Sepulcher, Solidus Coins of Justinian II (692 CE) & more). Two different facial expressions of Christs on either side may emphasize Dyophysitic or Dyoenergetic Christological Doctrine (Christ's two natures/energies - Divine & Human).
- St. Catherine Monastery’s hosts the oldest library in the world, renowned for its great antiquity, containing more than 4000 ancient manuscripts & Codices with priceless historical value, 2nd only to Vaticans Library. Some of the celebrated epigraphical work is Codex Sinaiticus, written in alexandrine greek & dated to mid 4th Century C.E., which makes it one of the oldest existing text of the Bible. Some scholars suggested that the manuscript was commissioned by the orders of Emperor Constantine I & written under supervision of the famous theologian & bishop - Eusebius of Caesarea.
