Just bought a used iMac 2017 with a 1TB drive. Learned the hard way after disassembly that there is a big difference between a 1TB drive and a 1TB Fusion Drive. Without the fusion they don’t populate the nvme slot on the motherboard. Argh….

The internal NVMe SSD will certainly run faster inside the iMac due to it being connected directly on the motherboard. If you use an external Thunderbolt 3 SSD will still be faster and you internal HDD if you are not comfortable doing the SSD upgrade. We do have notes on the software installation on macsales.com: Support > Drive Formatting Tips > How to Migrate OS X and Your Data to a New Drive However, Apple Support has better documents on the question, since this has to do with the operating system, not the hardware. @OWC I bought this kit for the exact same model in this video. There is no mention of the temperature sensor that does not work using the SSD in your kit. That causes the state of the fan to run on high as well as the kernel_task process to go into an emergency mode and slow down the entire computer. I have not been able to find a fix anywhere online for this issue. Are you aware of this issue? From a quick Google search I was able to tell that this has happened to many more people.

You're iMac 14,1 or 14,3 you can install a NVMe SSD but if you want the M2 you will need an adapter as you have stated. We do not offer this option but if you have the correct adapter you should not have any issues with having the M2 SSD to be detected. You should be able to format the M2 SSD the same way as any other drive. Regrettably you can only upgrade this iMac 10.15.7 Catalina, You are unable to go beyond. Hello, and to know if it is possible to change the processor of my iMac model machine iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inches, 2017) It currently has a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core processor. Do you know how much I can upload it? Well, according to Apple, these legends indicate that I copied and pasted you. (Configurable to Intel Core i7 with 4 cores and 3.6 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz) And if the replacement part is correct, how do I order it online or how would I look for the replacement part???? since it gives me many results and it is confusing for me to find the part to replace. Well, the processor is where I have the most doubts
On the other hand, memory indicates this...
    Memory
    3.0GHz
    8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory
    Configurable to 16 GB
    3.4GHz
    8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 memory
Configurable to 16 GB or 32 GB
But obviously I haven't opened it, I don't know if it works at 3.0 GHz or 3.4 GHz, as I understand it and if it uses 3.4 GHz it is possible to maximize it up to 32GB. Is my thinking correct?
And finally, on the hard drive, it has a 1TB HDD but it indicates that it can be replaced as follows...
    Storage
    3.0GHz
1 TB hard drive (5400 rpm)
Configurable to 1TB Fusion Drive or 256GB or 512GB SSD
    3.4GHz
    1TB Fusion Drive
Configurable to 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB SSD
But my doubt is!!! If I can install an SSD with a larger capacity than the one proposed on the page, it indicates up to 1TB. But it can be increased from 2TB to 4TB?????
Or would you definitely not recognize it?
I hope for your help with these three ways to maximize the performance of this old machine.

Instead of wasting time cracking open an iMac, do this:
    1. Do a Time Machine backup
    2. Install the latest OS that your iMac can handle, onto an external SSD
    3. Boot from external SSD (hold down option key while booting)
    4. Run the Migration Assistant in Utilities folder
    5. Bring your files and settings over from the Time Machine backup
    6. Go into Startup Drive in System Preferences and set your SSD as the startup disk
    7. Reboot and sign in
    8. Tape (or velcro) your external SSD to the back of your iMac
    9. Done
Cleaner. And if that SSD ever fails, MUCH easier to replace than to crack into the iMac again.
And you will get most of the speed increase from the external SSD.
Probably best NOT to do this to an iMac that's 2012 or earlier though, as they have only USB 2.0

@@AlbertoDiGiovanni i have done exactly the same thing , i remove the fusion drive and replaced with a crucial 500GB SSD (i only keep the 28GB NVMe from the fusion drive) and i add new ram (2 sticks of 8GB each = 16GB ram total) this machine is now working totally different! Maybe in the future i will remove the 28GB NVMe from the fusion drive and replace with a 500GB NVMe or 1TB NVMe

@@Made0nEarth I don't think you will be able to do it, the shape is completely different than a MVME, I found an original 128G APPLE ssd but I don't want to do it, the risk is high the minimum gain, with 28G the operating system is all inside therefore the loading times would be the same, it would have a minimum of more speed just by opening applications.
