Today the History Guy tells two stories of forgotten colonization. First he tells the story of Popham, a British colony started shortly after Jamestown that disappeared into history. Then he tells the story of the Darien Scheme, a daring plan by Scotland to establish a colony in Panama.

When I taught social studies, I loved to blow the students mind by telling them it could have been the 20 colonies-turned-states. Quebec, Barbados, other colonies had similar grievances as the 13 that broke away. There was nothing "guaranteed" about 13. When folks ask, " why didn't Georgia come to the 1st Continental Congress?" I ask, "Why didn't Jamaica or Nova Scotia come to the 2nd? They were all invited, all 30 something in existence."
Shows today, Sons of Liberty for example, like to make out that "the southern colonies are holding us back" by not agreeing to independence. In reality, the southern colonies were vastly richer than most New England colonies. Southern colonies were more connected with those in the Caribbean, and had to be wooed and convinced to contribute their wealth. And the folks convening the Congresses just weren't convincing enough to the other American colonies in what are today Canada and the Caribbean.

What too many of the supporters of Mars colonization don't think of is the 200 to 300 year support system/project commitment that will be needed to succeed. Early US settlement shows such will be needed to form a solid self-sufficient community.

We need to think about saving our planet first, before we even begin thinking about moving on to Mars and then ruining that too…. Not to get too political or ‘preachy’ but we only have so many chances left and we’re squandering them year after year. It’s sad that Elon Musk, Richard Branson and their like are so focused on the media sensation of Mars being the answer to our problems here on Earth that they’re just not focused on saving what we have. And yes I’m fully aware of Tesla electric cars, but you STILL have to PLUG THEM IN TO THE NATIONAL GRID in order to charge them !! There’s nothing eco-friendly about that… It’s not ‘green’ energy - you’re using the local power plant either nuclear or more likely fossil fuel to power your electric car and people seem to forget that fact ! Musk’s California Plant is plugged into the grid to maintain its power supply because solar power can’t be your only power source otherwise your plant would shut down on a cloudy day ! We don’t have batteries that can store enough solar power for long enough to power a car plant, and it’s likely that we never will. This is what annoys me about electric cars and the people who buy them. They have no idea how they’re made - the destruction of coral reefs to obtain some of the rare minerals needed, the massive open cast mining for other minerals that causes massive damage to the environment and of course the batteries that we can’t dispose of without potentially destroying our oceans… All this to give you an ‘environmentally friendly’ car - it’s absolutely absurd and just bloody dangerous !! Mars will never support 7+ billion people, therefore only those who can afford it will ‘possibly’ be able to go - you’re talking billionaires only. If that’s not a good enough reason to avoid it then I don’t know what is 😂😂 ! And any planet where you need a giant nuclear explosion to even begin to make it hospitable for human life sounds like a bad idea to start with…..

Honestly, a moon base is a more realistic near term goal. Mars will take MUCH longer, since it's a LOT further away and we haven't even gotten experience landing people on it yet...or even flying a manned spacecraft there and back to earth.

The Scottish people abroad always reminds me of Billy Connolly’s stand-up comedy. He describes the Scots as “not white but a kind of pale blue colour…” skin that’s not meant for sunshine ! ☀️ 😂😂 The very idea of them having a colony in hot, sunny Panama just makes me smile…. And of course ALL good stories involve Pirates ! 😉It’s sad that the venture failed with such a great loss of life, let alone money that left many people at home destitute. To be failed by English interference and collusion with the other European powers that ultimately led to conflict and death. Enough people were already dying daily of malaria and yellow fever - things that were completely unknown to the Scottish people at the time. I don’t think that anyone gave any thought to the tropical climate that meant heat, disease and the inability to make basic shelter or grow food. Hunting would’ve been extremely dangerous because of the wild jungle that was home to many predators and poisonous plants, snakes and insects…. Sadly due to broken promises and lack of understanding about the climate meant it was doomed from the start.

I do not like watching a static screen. It is more engaging to watch the History Guy deliver the stories.

As far as the kidnapping goes they probably didn't think anything of it because they were used to capturing pows and slaves from around the world so that was just normal life to them

If Elon Musk actually does discover five Martians, I'm encouraged that he is not likely to kidnap them and take them to Earth. More likely, Elon would ask them for asylum!

The colonist supplied more by example, rather than by we are English, or we are French, or will do with our way, and you have to follow us, we might’ve had a very different experience, colonizing America. Dropped a pretense of superiority and realize you weren’t in an area that you don’t understand it is foreign to you, pay attention to those that are there listen to what they have to say, and do not be a little their advice.

Why did you discontinue your face to face podcast? Listening to you speak but not seeing you is not what brought me to your channel. With you looking into the camera it was like you were talking right at me. But now it’s very generic and is not as interesting as before. If this is a new trend then I am going to leave the channel. Sorry I really enjoyed your talks.

Put your pinky on that picture and You Tube will transport you to the THG Channel. Once there, select "videos" from the menu & you'll find ALL the past episodes that you enjoy so much. Note that there are 6 videos for every pod. No need to leave the channel, John ... and Semper Fi.
