For a taste of the big mountains around Mt Whitney without the massive effort or hard-to-get permit, try the very doable Lone Pine Lake hike which follows the Mt Whitney Trail. It's a moderate effort but very doable by most people as a half-day adventure. When you finish the climb to Lone Pine Lake, you're rewarded with a pristine mountain lake, a scenic picnic area, and a backdrop of the high peaks in the Eastern Sierra.

MY GOAL! I can’t climb Mt Whitney because I am not a moderate or pro hiker. I am just a beginner hiker . This is a bucket list goal to do moderate hike.
For anyone new to Hiking Guy. Cris is for real. I use his trail guides for the major trails in So-Cal. They are spot on. Once you watch the video of a certain hike he has videoed, that you want to hike. Of course map it or download the trip. But when you watch Cris and his guide lines, you feel as if you have been there before. I did the Cactus 2 Clouds hike twice now. Even then, I have watch the video that Cris did a dozen times. Yes I can download it into my GPS, but I am very visual of whats in front of me. His video of the Cactus to Clouds is the best. I can remember what Cris had in his video, and follow his directions. I really feel and expect to see his directions and get to end. To me it's so relaxing to have seen a play by play of what the hike is in front of you.
Whoa, what a great comment, thank you so much! Grateful that you all use the guides and they come in handy. I try my best to give you everything you need to feel confident on the hikes so hearing this is music to my ear. Stay tuned, many more hikes to come!
If you go here. Go ahead and keep going to the ridge top overlooking outpost camp. Go left and up for great view of pass and whitney. Epic.
That is beautiful country!! Thanks for the video!!!
I'm going to Lone Pine Lake!!! Thanks for sharing.
Have fun! You'll love it...
Yay! Heading up this Sunday. Thanks for the great video! :)
Hope you had a great hike!
Beautiful hike! My dog and I love getting out there and hiking as well. Can’t wait until we get to hike something this gorgeous
Nice, yea, lots of sweet spots around the Eastern Sierras if you can get out there, def worth a visit!
Great video. Cant wait to check this place out. Video was well done and very helpful
Thank you, and you'll love it, it's a beautiful area!
Thank you for the very helpful info! This one is on my to do list with the family. I always know exactly what to expect after watching your trail guide. TYVM.
Thank you & glad the guides come in handy! This hike a great one for the family too, you'll love it.
HikingGuy.com it’s now on my list I’m hoping to do this one in the next few weeks!
Thanks again
Thank you for sharing this looks to be a very beautiful trail 👏🏼
Yes, give it a try, really nice one!
Beautiful video!
thank you!
Appreciate this!
Looks amazing 👏
Thank you, yea, it's a beautiful spot, give it a try if you're there...
What s stunning place... a little bit of heaven.. enough to bring tears to your eyes with the splender. Just subbed to your channel and looking forward to watching all of your videos. I love nature and we live in a country area on a farm. - Ruthie
Awesome, must be great to be on a farm. I'm right by the water and love it as well. Thanks for the sub and more hikes to come!
Another great video!!!! I love this hike! I have hiked it three times, once a few years back in late May with snow on the ground the last half mile or so. This is a great time of year to hike it, especially mid-week and you may have the lake to yourself. It is a fun lake to fish for rainbow trout. The trout aren't big, but it is a fun place to fish with beautiful scenery and a great spot to relax for a few hours. ;If fishing the lake, you will probably be the only one fishing it. Thanks again for your videos.
Nice nice, yea, I've done this in the spring with snow too, so beautiful. I've also had good luck in the late afternoon in the summer, a few times I've been there all by myself which is awesome. Haven't fished it yet, but it's on my list....
@@Hikingguy My wife and I went up to Lone Pine on Saturday, October 12. We lucked out and got a campsite at the Portal and then hiked to Lone Pine Lake. This is the first time I have hiked it on a weekend. A lot more foot traffic, but still a beautiful hike. Fished for a short time at LP Lake. First time of my four hikes to this lake that I did not catch fish. I love this hike!
@@mikak1 Nice, yea, the weekends can be busy. I did it on a Sunday this year in early August and it was pretty busy, especially on the lower slopes. But yea, once you get there, it's pure heaven.
great video!
Nice hike. I've only done it once, want to go back and do it again.
Yea, I've done it a bunch of times, always beautiful, worth going back and doing.
Nice video
Thank you....
You're welcome! 👍
Thanks
very pretty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! outdoors is bad ass
Thank you so much for this vid! It was actually on the "To Hike" list as the closest I'll ever get to Mt Whitney lol! Your videos are very helpful and inspiring. I hope you continue to post more beautiful CA hikes! Have you ever done Palisades Glacier? That's another on the To Hike/Camp list ;)
Thank you! And yes, Palisade Glacier is an awesome hike and I had it on my list for this year but didn't get to it, but should have it next summer. Have you tried Cottonwood Lakes, also a nice hike in that neck of the woods, will have that one up shortly. So many great places up there....
Thank you for your amazing video and guides.
Have you ever done the Big Pine Lake(s) trail. If i missed it in your channel, please excuse me! But i even searched through the videos with keywords and didn't find anything for hikes on that part of the Sierras.
Glad the guides have been helpful! 👍👍 So I've done Big Pine Lake many times and it's spectacular, but I don't have a guide up for it yet. The guide was on the list for this past summer but I stayed away to minimize the potential COVID impact on small towns. I should have a guide up this summer, but until then I'd just try the AllTrails app or something along those lines. It's a fairly popular hike and there should be something out there.
@@Hikingguy thank you so much for your prompt and kind response! I’ll check AllTrails, I’ve used it in the past (nothing compares to yours).
I’ll be on the look out for when you do, thanks again!
Are you able to overnight/fish at lone pine lake?
What's the best time to go? Also, what's the elevation gain from the campground?
Check the link in the description - best time is summer
Beautiful hike! Are mountain bikes allowed? Are dogs allowed?
No bikes + yes to leashed dogs
Is this a trail you can do in mid March? Will there be snow that will prevent you from hiking? Thinking of going there this spring break 2023. Thanks
it'll be clobbered with snow and the road to Whitney Portal will be closed - probably best in July until Oct
I don't recommend taking your 14 year old daughter who doesn't like to hike. Fortunately, I don't remember there being any ledges you can throw yourself from if you do, so it's relatively safe.
Haha god... I always feel for the parents when I see the miserable kids... they always have the same look, like they're on a death march...
@@Hikingguy haha....you nailed it!!
The best part is 5 years from now when they will tell you how much they enjoyed the hike and how glad they are you took them! The joy of raising teenagers! Haha
@@skram2626 haha...ahhh wish that was the case with that child. She's a sweetheart, but I don't know if she will ever take to hiking. Maybe a cute boy will come hike into her life some day. Oh well, at least 1 out of 3 of my kids hikes.
Did you go in the morning or evening ?
Morning
Is fishing allowed there ?
Yes, just need a license
Swimming allowed?
can you stay the night?
You need a wilderness permit but I believe so
@@Hikingguy You're correct, wilderness permit is required. Lone Pine Lake is a campsite selection choice one can choose when getting the very hard to get Mt Whitney Wilderness lottery permit. As your video shows, Lone Pine Lake is inside the "Wilderness" (sign) on the trail which means one needs a permit to camp there. When hiking to the Whitney Summit I prefer to camp at Lone Pine Lake over Outpost Camp because there's less hiker traffic at Lone Pine Lake and it's quiet compared to Outpost Camp which has the 24/7 waterfall noise, which some may prefer (soothing?). On the downside, the water at Lone Pine Lake doesn't appear to be as clean as the water coming out of the Outpost Camp waterfall. You have folks who bring their dogs (legal?) that almost always swim in the lake plus there's algae in the stagnant lake (from human/dog nutrients?)...fyi, I refill my drinking water when I cross the "Log Bridges" a bit before the Lone Pine Lake cutoff .....and if going for Whitney Summit I also refill at Outpost Camp or Mirror Lake. Oh yeah, nice video!
Are dogs allowed?
