"It might be weird that a shred guitarists is writing kazoo solos to get what he wants out of an instrument..." (paraphrased)
No Paul, that's a master musician showing the rest of us how it's done. That's CREATIVE. Paul has never forgotten that playing music is something that you're supposed to ENJOY. If you fancy yourself a musician, and aren't inspired by Paul Gilbert... well, you might want to take up a different hobby, because you probably don't get it.
Paul must be one of the nicest guys in the history of rock n roll, so humble and down to earth yet is an absolute demon on guitar, lessons with him would be priceless.
... and he´s a great teacher! =)
Very likeable, honest guy!
He must be...See: Buckethead...one of his pupils...
I'll bet he and Ronnie James Dio would have been great together.
1000 years of playing and his muscle memory continues to always turning the volume down each time the guitar moves...!!
I laughed really hard when he said "Damn those shred fans......"
Paul Gilbert; such a nice guy he makes Tom Hanks look like Gene Simmons.
Nice!
kazoo solo.
this is why I love paul gilbert
Quintin Pace get it right! It was electric kazoo.....
I fully agree with you Paul. "Vibrato" is one of the best solos you've ever written. It's up there with the "Paul vs. Godzilla" solo!
From a guitarist's standpoint, it's ingenious. But to listen, it's (I think) rather unenjoyable. All over the place rhythm-wise and barely a memorable moment. The main melody and solo of "I Can Destroy" - now that's memorable.
The riff in "Vibrato", however, is great. Absolutely amazing. Loved every clever thing about it that Paul mentions in the video.
I kind of agree that "I Can Destroy" solo is more memorable, but I don't agree that it's more enjoyable. It probably depends on what kind of music you like. I like blues and that solo is super bluesy :) And it's wonderful how it builds up from slow phrases to really fast ones. It's definitely not easier to play that kind of melodic solo than a shred solo.
Screw the negative, shred heads, Paul. Vibrato is the funkiest, smoothest thing you've ever written. Super classy. Rock on!
Paul Gilbert - 2016 - 4:34 the moment he reveals every answer in the universe! Thanks Paul!! LOL
This entire series is PURE GOLD!!
After seeing this series of videos you can say Paul has that "genius vibe". The fluency, clarity and speed of his speech, his musical memory and, of course his playing skills show he his a special guy. And quite nice and humble...
You're amazing Paul! I'm grateful there's a slight probability you've personally read my comment.
You just make me smile every time I watch a video you do. Doesn't matter if you're playing or just teaching. Thanks for showing that guitar playing is...and should be fun.
Dear Paul! Please make more episodes of Scarified! I like this series, great stuff and cool and interessting stories. Would be so happy, if there also would be Episodes 20-30 :-) All the best to your family and you. Hope you're doing fine right now.
I have met Paul twice and he is as genuinely nice as he appears
I love Paul's videos! Not only is he a great guitarist and teacher, every time he tells a story or demonstrates riffs and techniques, his face lights up with pure joy! You can tell he loves what he does and it's so very inspiring! Makes you want to pick up a guitar right away and push your boundaries!
I loved the Vibrato record. His solo era has been the best material of his career. I really think there’s a larger audience among the Jamband Prog scene for what he’s doing that his publicist hasn’t clued into.
Paul's best quality:He understands it's not about MONEY.Acquire the skills first, the rest will follow..
Ugh this series is gold! Thanks Paul!
this man is a gift to all of us. just wonderful,
Oh man... How I wish he continued this series, it's amazing how much we can learn from Paul in just a few minutes, much love from Portugal!
You are my guitar hero Paul. Thanks for all the inspiration you gave me through all these years!
He's right - rock needs to roll as well. Nice one Mr G.
Paul you are an excellent speaker and one of my favorite musicians ever! I wish you would make more videos like these, just sitting down and talking about stuff. It's easy listening and you are a very intelligent person.
I always saw "Vibrato" solo is one of the best Paul has ever come up with.
Hey Paul I know I’m late to the party but Vibrato is the best song in that album man. Absolutely love it.
What a lovely human being. Thank you Paul!
Paul's left hand during legatos, pulloffs hammer-ons are so pronounced it sounds like a pick attack. That sets him in a class of very few. Strong player.
This guy is remarkable!
The song Vibrato and the solo IS some on the best guitar playing I've ever heard. That and Atmosphere on the moon. As a "shredguy" I find it very sad that other shredguys are so tasteless. You rock (and groove) Paul! 😀
this series make my day thank you Paul
Thanks Paul for these stories and tips!😀
Man, remembering riffs you haven't played in 30+ years...that's incredible!
Really enjoyed the episodes -- awesome stuff thanks Paul! Been a big fan of yours for a long time and was a student on your school for a while. You've taught me so much in the realm of guitar. You rock thanks!!!!!
this is really cool all of the stories and especially the methods he has used over the years to get himself to the next level of playing
Love this ! This is what make the internet priceless- shared communication and ideas , teaching and community ! Really ads to the quality of my life thx
I'm a shred fan but gotta say I always dug that solo. it's got quite the feel
watching whole episode. nice Paul
Damn what a great and humble man you are, and thanks for all you offer here on CZcams!
Paul Gilbert has the best personality in rock without a doubt
Thank you, Paul!!
Masterful!
Merci Paul
Thanks, Paul. Love your skill and transparency!
Paul I loved Vibrato. One of my favorites. Thanks.
One helluva beautiful guitar!...And Paul, you're the best. I have learned a TON about the fundamentals from you. Your passion for not just guitar playing, but music and rhythm in general is infectious. Keep on rockin' brother!
Such a chilled, down-to-earth, amazing guy.
Gotta love this guy.
Beautiful & excellent video .. (curious aside - that front on shot it wonderfully coloured) ..
Paul is such an inspiring player.
Thank you for inspiring me to play better, Paul!
Amazing person, let alone guitar!
I love vibrato record! my favorite one!
I love this guitar!!!! Is so, so beauty! :D
that's music from the heart and soul!
I love that guy
i love vibrato album and the subsequent European tour in camden was amazing! i framed the signed drum skin i bought and its been on my wall above my fireman ever since!
3:51 Paul nails the voice of a shred fan
Love your work Paul through all these years. Please come to Germany to teach, or something :D
For what it's worth, I love vi-bruh-toe. Maybe not as much as I love Norwegian Cowbell or Stone Pushing Uphill Man, but it's right up there.
More of these? please? :D
my favorite guitar of his man i want it
Love the mint green fireman. Lots of panache.
Darn that guitar is nice!!!!!
I tried to write a solo on a kazoo once, I ran out of space, maybe I need a sharpie with a finer nib.
cool story about the song
I'm literally laughing out loud!
Paul, Paul !!!! If you read me please, i want you to know this : YOU AWESOME!!!
Another extraordinary guitarist, Christophe Godin (vive la France :p), once told the exact same thing : if you can sing a solo, then your solo's ganna be awesome :)
Genius minds meet together !
Awesome musician, marvelous guitarist, extremely humble and cheerfull human being, Paul is one of those artists (like Joe Satch, Guthrie Govan or Christophe Godin) that i'd love so much to meet one day before I die ... so inspiring :)
That's a great way to write a solo if you ask me. I'm going to try it myself now. :-)
Paul Gilbert its also my Musicbrother ìn love Jimi the Rat from Germany thanks
I've never wanted a guitar more than that guitar.
2:36 i play in Bb very often(i'm a jazz guitarist).
everybody use your GOT DAMN turn signal is such a cool tune
les talk, more play!
I wish I still had my 1st RacerX record I got years ago.
I'd sit through a Barry Manilow concert for a chance to own that Fireman with the double covered HBs. It's the only guitar I like more than Stacey David's Crazy Horse Les Paul.
I dig it, even at mere mention of it. I get it, melody comes from inside the head. An electric Kazoo makes sense.
The best solos are the ones that you can sing or hum, don't you think? Songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, Back in the USSR and so on. Because they have memorable melodies that have some feeling and they lead to somewhere. That's what I found in Vibrato solo.
17-19? Did I miss an episode? =P
I love that surfgreen Fireman!!
You missed "The Portnoy Projects", dude! Hit that, it's as cool as the rest of the series. And hellyeah, that surf green Fireman is TITS!
I'd say it was Sonic Blue but not really sure...
Can I have that Guitar?…man that's nice! Would love to play it!
anyone else find this hilarious? great stuff..
Electric kazoo master)))
Paul should do an entire record with just the kazoo
HOLA: 13 - 10 - 2016
Paul Gilbert ordered an electric Kazoo on the internet. I had to look up who actually sells those, as I have never heard of such a thing. Turns out Target sells them... who knew?
Screw those dudes!!! It doesn't always have to be fast. The vocal nature of that solo was the 1st thing that got me about that album. Same thing with Paul vs. Godzilla!!!! Easily my two favorite PG tunes!!!
My birthday is on May 27th : )
Who's still waiting for new episode?
his hand... so big!! i believe if he spans both palms, 29 guitar frets could be reached. Both my palms could reach exactly 24 frets!!
Paul. No guitar players play in B-flat
Roy Clark hold my beer
youtube is not the place you want to be going for criticism
where's episode 18?
not that i dont like speedy shred solos, i love that stuff, but i just wish there were more people like Paul, where you're an absolute speed demon but you choose to play otherwise like 50-60% of the time
KAZOO SOLO !
What's the name of the intro song? It's an amazing lick
Scarified
+fhpr68 thank you
Sweden next!??
what's that thing with a lot of lights on the back? is it an amp?
That's the Kemper profiling amp.
Nice thumbnail...
He’s quite demonic
