  • Tick expert, Dr. Thomas Mather, explains how to do a tick check on yourself and your pets. After spending time in a tick habitat, it’s important to do a thorough tick check. While many recommend checking from head to toe, Dr. Mather recommends checking from the lower part of your body first and then moving up, because that’s how ticks move, from the ground up.

Put a mirror on the floor and be sure to check your nether regions if you don't have someone to check for you. Guys, lift up the frank and beans, check under, behind and all around.

You can buy and wear treated clothes or treat your own. Gamehide has their Elimatick line of clothing. Sawyer Permethrin spray in pump bottles or aerosol cans. Both really work. You spray your clothes yourself, wash normally. I hang mine up to dry. You can tumble dry, but a lot is lost in the dryer. The Gamehide clothes are good for 70 washes. The ones that you treat yourself are good for 6 washes. A tick just walking on a pair not real new Gamehide pants died after less than 30 seconds on the pants. Saw it walking on the dogs fur. Caught it snd put it on a pair of Gamehide pants. It seemed agitated after 15 seconds. I kept moving the pants to keep it in sight. Put it quart ziploc bag with lots of air. It was dead when I checked a few minutes later.

    My method:
    1) step outside onto patio for a few minutes to enjoy nature.
    2) come back inside and sit at computer.
    3) wait until i feel feathery touch on the back of my hand/forearm/neck
    4) roll eyes and grumble, "Seriously?! All I did was step outside for a few minutes."
    5) remove tick and dispose of creatively and vindictively

    Tick Check:
    Step 1: get naked
Step 2: put clothes in the washing machine
Step 3: look at every inch of your skin
Step 4: look again, then take a thorough shower

I’ve found ticks on me that were so small I had to zoom in with my phone and then zoom that image to see it. It was just a tiny black dot if I didn’t zoom in. They were so small I couldn’t even feel them walking on me. I measured one and it was about 1/2 mm in size (about 0.02”). My method now is to take a hot shower right after getting in the house and put the clothes in the laundry for washing.

    So quick question
Can ticks get blown around by the wind

    • @Eyes0penNoFear
      @Eyes0penNoFear Před 10 měsíci

A recent study shows they can use static electricity to more easily attach as you walk by, but it would probably take significant wind to get them airborne.

Sitting next to my husband at our son's tennis match (under trees & high population of ticks) I saw them appear on my husband's arm, stomach, etc. They either dropped from the trees above (I know they say they don't do this) or were blown by the wind.

Doing a tick check is almost Too Little / Too Late.
    Prevention is 90 %.
    Ticks climb, don't ( can't ? ) decend.
A mirror, or better yet, Two, is secondary to someone checking you.
    A shower doesn't hurt.
    Actively check, recheck, re-recheck for 5 days ( 7 better ).
A week of checking is better than a lifetime of suffering.
    For man and beast.

You've heard of tick-born illnesses right??? When a tick becomes engorged with blood it starts to regurgitate or backwash into your bloodstream, which is when a diseased tick is most likely to infect you with any of the many tick-born infectious diseases they can carry.
The earlier a tick is found and removed, the less likely you are to be infected with any of the many diseases the tick may have been carrying.
