  • In TSJ 29.2, author Phil Jarratt recounts the events surrounding the 1970 World Contest in Johanna, Australia-near Torquay and Bells Beach-where Nat Young, Gerry Lopez, Michael Peterson, Reno Abellira, Rolf Aurness, and other top surfers from around the world convened to determine a world champion. The town was not prepared for the arrival of the bohemian "professional" surfers and-amidst a dismal waiting period-mischief ensued.
Gathered here is a collection of footage from Tim Burstall's 1971 documentary of the event "Getting Back To Nothing," along with excerpts from the print story narrated by the writer.

Torquay pub, man, wild times, good times back then, spark up a joint and head out for a wave, the surfers way, an artists way. How the Oz coast has changed, the locals can hardly afford to live by the sea anymore, blow ins from the city have f`d it...for what? Aloha

@seanh1ckeyHow you can ignore the obvious growing economic inequality between the ruling class (the 1% of billionaires) and the rest of us? You can vote for a senator, can’t vote for a CEO 🤷‍♂️. Boot licker.

Pretty ballsy for a young PHIL Jarrat to say & see through the hype surrounding surfing back then. Respect!

epoch. what a moment in the history professional surfing. Rolf's story of a Californian World Surf Champion in 1970 is relatively unknown. Tom Curren would follow in the wake of Rolf in the 1980's. Both were humble and radical and changed the course of professional surfing in their own ways. Both with legendary fathers in the history of our sport. Not sure who knows about Rolf's father's impact on the world of surfing. As kids, we ALL watched Rolf's father every week on "Gunsmoke" in the 1960's. But no one knew that, in between TV filming sessions, "Sheriff Matt Dillon" (and possibly Rolf?) surfed Rincon during the legendary winter of 1969..... There's a Hollywood movie in this story. Rolf may have faded temporarily into obscurity in the surf world, but he's a legend. someday someone with means will figure this out and he'll be given the recognition his legacy deserves. 😎🤙✌
