Omg, watching this video right now and when you opened the first 'before' drawer, I thought, that is EXACTLY what my filing drawers look like! Can't wait to see the after!
I'm totally the same way...I want to hold on to everything "just in case" so that's part of the reason I like this system so much. It forces you to purge and keep only what you really need!
I did initially, but then I decided against buying colored folders. They are more expensive, and in the event that I continue to add tabs, I didn't want to have to try to match the colors just right (so few come in a package). I find that it works perfectly well with the economical, green folders, and the color coding is still very clear with the stickers. That's just my 2 cents.

I actually just recently bought the Freedom Filer system as well after doing research and having it come up in some of my favorite blogs. I'm at the painful stage of having to purge and kind of procrastinating because of the "pains" that will result from the process! LOL! You have inspired me to get a move on. Thanks!

I have been purging papers for a few weeks, but hadn't decided on how to set everything up again. I have to keep track of myself, husband, and two boys. I have to tell both of you, what an Amazing system! You count your blesses Hubby Your Wife has done it all for you! Who doesn't mind someone putting paper work such as files Completely Organized for... the both of you! You know he loves it, like you said. I just purchase our filing cabinet a while agoooo, and it's in the basement since it's purchase, needless to say completely in chaos!!! I'm a stay home dad Whoa! With laundry, dishes, ironing, vacuuming, washing toilets, feeding the kids, driving them to their volleyball games, now that it's winter. There's soccer games/practices in the summer, with a couple of weeks for them at camp, guitar lessons, our daughter was doing dance for a short while. Before they were as old as they are now, it was swimming lessons/ power staking., my list of things, to keep track of goes on for Ever... I really need to get down stairs and sort that cabinet OUT! Can't keep everything on my phone.... Now.. I was thinking Hubby.. you'd best keep in mind Diamonds are the best thing to show your appreciation for all she does for you. Great as it is to hold the video cam, diamonds go along ways. Oh! when the kids come along get ready for an Amazing ride, the ups and downs. Enjoy! thank you for your video.
I LOVE your channel, and I MUST buy this! My filing cabinet looks EXACTLY like yours! The only exception is that I've taken ONE step towards organizing myself by putting my bills into two large binders with pockets for the month due. It's self purging because I throw away everything that is in the month (from last year) before I put anything NEW into that month! My next step is to TOTALLY upgrade my filing system, and this is EXACTLY what I need! Thanks so much!

I am literally doing all my files tomorrow!! All have been pulled from the drawers in baskets. I have my freedom files labeled in the drawers ready to purge old extras and refile in the new files!! Perfect timing finding your video. Thanks!! Great motivation!! ;)

Hey there :) I know how it feels to tackle big tasks like that! It will feel soooo good when it's done. I just got freedom filer based on your recommendation. So far so good. I needed a filing system at all because our house flooded a year ago and all of our papers got tossed into boxes in a big mess. I've so far spent one night going through several of the boxes, but there is still a lot to do!

This is a great system!
I just came across this video after watching your current ones as I have the hardest time with papers and filing that works. It really helped to see the before of your filing system and mine looks a lot similar and I don't like it. It looked a lot neater with the new system and I find the color codes are so helpful to get to what you are looking for much faster! The only part that I don't know if it may work for me with this system is filing receipts by month. I am pretty sure I won't remember very well when I purchased something as much as I will remember where I purchased it from, thus I have been using a filing system by store name, but it does take up a lot more room. I would definitely have to try it to see if that part would be a problem for me. And I love your long hair! It looks so great on you!

Did you ever post a video on how you organize your coupons? You mention it in here...but after searching (and spending an hour watching several other videos ;) I can't find it. Hi, I am in love with this system. Thank you for explaining it!! I have been unhappy with our file system for a while, it's all jumble-y and have wanted to clean it up for a while but didn't know what to do.
My only question is how do you organize your manuals and product info for appliances?? I have my in the bottom of my file cabinet in folders but they are way to much and are a crazy mess! We have a lot of baby items that we are keeping the manuals for and also general appliances.
Interesting system. I think as we move forward technologically scanners, OCR software (to make docs searchable) and computers files (whether on your own PC or in the cloud) will one day make much of that paper chase a thing of the past. Thanks for sharing
I get a new wall calendar for my kitchen every year. I find if I save them I have a quick reference I can use when I need to remember a date.

The philosophy of this file system makes a lot of sense. How has it been working practically? It's now 2015 so you've been using it for nearly 2 "cycles" now. Is it still keeping things organized? Has clutter started building up? Really interested to know how it's been working for you.

+alotan2acs I've been wondering that also. Nothing on Kathryn, she seems incredibly good with things. :) Th only issue I've found is, the monthly files, then itemizing. My issue. I'll have all the monthly's out, then I itemize for "electric & fuel", "credit cards". etc. (Just like what she said lol! Not sure there's a need to, we don't own a business, so probably no.) Just another wonder-er. Thanks for this video Kathryn!! :) And thanks for the help!

Awesome. :) On your filing, I'm thinking this is just a strictly "personal preference" idea, but curious on your reasoning with putting all your labels in a row (for each category)? I watched the Home Organizing channel with how she did it. I haven't yet asked her this, only thought of it just now. :) This is my first year with this filing system (after both your videos) Thanks so much! :) :)

I so need this system, but I have a question. They have two sizes, 1/3 and 1/5. It looks like you have the 1/3 one where you can put the folders inside the hanging folders. With the other one, the 1/5 one, you put all of the papers inside the hanging file. Do you recommend the one you have over the other one? Thanks for this great video!

Just a random question not sure if you mentioned it in your video and i missed it; but where did you buy this ? was it online ?
I bought a 2 drawer vertical hanging file cabinet and have been researching everywhere for answers on what size folder to use. The only thing I can find on size is 3 tab or five, letter or legal. I have 2 different folders neither fit. Any help greatly appreciated. When I open the drawer the folder will be hanging facing me with the hooks on left and right sides of the drawer.
Did you purchase the system with the internal files? Or does it come with internal file tabs? Or do I have to purchase the additional kit? I'm confused.

how did you decide what color file folders to get? did you think about color coding the hanging folders with the labels? I bought the freedom filer, but now I'm stuck in indecision on what color hanging files to buy!!
I want to find a place holder so that when I pull files out of a file cabinet, it is easy to find where to put it back in the drawer. Is there a name for such a thing? Anyone got suggestions? I think they used to have these with the old library card catalogue system too.
Hi! I'm a new subscriber. I'm currently turning our home office into a nursery. I've already spent hours shredding useless papers that we thought we needed to keep! Do you have any tips for mail sorting into the file system? I'm not sure where we're going to keep our file cabinets. They might have to go in a hallway. We also just bought a fireproof safe that has room for permanant files. We have a ton of bills and papers stacked up on the kitchen counter because we're in transition!

freedom filer costs over forty dollars on amazon.... a little steep for me. HOWEVER freedom filer has a clip of how it works, on youtube, and after watching that clip, you can buy cheap stuff and build a system that works the same way... for 30 dollars less.
What does your husband do for a living?
