      "There are no good or bad actors, there is only good and bad acting." I don't know exactly who said that but I remember that piece of advice helping me answer that question. Of course a certain personality *can* help and talent can only take you so far but the biggest determining factor is can you act?

    • @johnwoodley
      @johnwoodley Před 2 lety +15

      Acting is a craft that is learned slowly over time. And always remember “you are enough.” Whatever personality and quirks you have make you unique. Bring aspects of yourself to every role

    • @yeetbra9485
      @yeetbra9485 Před 2 lety +4

      "Hard work beats talent when talent stays at home" you don't need to be wickedly talented, it's a craft, and like any craft it can be refined and improved through vagariously hard work. It's not easy however, you'll have to be incredibly disciplined.

    • @naomibelet
      @naomibelet Před 2 lety +34

      This is something I've thought a lot (lot, LOT) about over my life and so I want to reassure you - there is no "right" personality to be an actor. It is true that certain careers require certain personalities, but this is less true for ACTING than you might think. Why? Because art is always trying to capture the full spectrum of the human experience, and so we need as many different actors (with differing personalities) as we have characters needing to be played.
      As people, our "personality" also incorporates our "perspective" and THAT is the unique element that we each bring when we breathe a character to life. It's why there are so many different versions of Hamlet and they're all "right".
      Daniel Day Lewis is a master of his SKILLS so he can transform (i.e change his voice and his body) but his unique ARTISTRY is his INTERPRETATION - he interprets the character in the way that Daniel Day Lewis interprets, and this is a reflection of him and his perspective and the life he's lived and how it's shaped him. (From my analysis I've noticed running themes of rebelliousness, calculated playfulness and perfectionism in all his characters.) (NOTE: by "calculated playfulness" I don't mean his acting is calculated - I mean the people he portrays have a personality streak of enjoying - and sometimes weaponising - their wit.)
      Johnny Depp also transforms his body and voice. But he'll often bring a detached or "outsider-looking-in" perspective to his characters, with a signature eccentric streak. Marlon Brando always brought a roughness/ unbridled sexuality. Michelle Williams brings fragility + innocence with an undercurrent of buried, complex wildness. Charlize Theron brings a volcanic, violent intensity. Kristen Stewart brings a haphazard anxiousness. etc etc etc etc. You get my point. Transforming is the skill component. Perspective/personality/who we are/the way we interpret the world (and lines from a script) is our artistry.
      You don't have to change who you are. Also remember that acting gives you the opportunity to explore private parts of yourself that aren't necessarily part of your personality in public. We all have many sides and depths to us! That's why I love acting. You get to explore parts of yourself that don't fit in polite society but that we all have inside.
      Also remember that when you see actors being super charming and witty in interviews, they are often still playing a part, and many have been "media trained" so don't get down on yourself if you think you aren't vivacious enough. No one is, all the time.
      Additionally, consider that there are also "personality traits" that are not actually personality traits - they are SKILLS you can work on and cultivate, specifically for acting. These skills are: 1) genuine openness /being present 2) playfulness (connection to your inner child) 3) vulnerability (this can be totally private, but you have to have emotional understanding of yourself).
      Lastly, if there IS a personality trait that is requisite to being an actor, I'd say you have it - which is simply, you love acting enough to worry if you're good enough to do it. Take that passion, work hard, get better, and enjoy the journey. All the best to you!!! xx
