  • TikTok’s chief executive has vowed to ‘keep fighting’, after the US House of Representatives passed a bill that could see the app banned in the US.
Shou Zi Chew warned that if the bill becomes law, it will mean the end of the app for its 170 million users in the US.
While the bill passed overwhelmingly in the vote, it still needs to clear the Senate and be signed by the president to become law.

The first TikTok is an American company. Chinese companies hold 20% of the shares, but Chinese companies have technology and algorithms, which is what the U.S. government desperately wants. Imposing a sweeping ban or fording it to be sold on TikTok undermines fair market competition and the free market economy, setting a concerning precedent. Leveraging government power to target and suppress a foreign competitor opens a Pandora's box of detrimental ramifications for marketplace integrity.
Fair competition fosters innovation and consumer choice in capitalism. Allowing companies to use state power against market rivals distorts the playing field, discourages foreign investment, and stifles market diversity and vibrancy.
Such actions also incentivize businesses to prioritize political lobbying over product improvement. Instead of focusing on superior offerings, companies may invest resources in shaping regulations to entrench their positions.
Fair competition upholds democratic values and individual freedoms. Suppressing competitors based on origin or affiliations risks protectionism, nationalism, and reduced consumer choice.
Rather than bans or forced sale, establishing uniform data privacy and security standards for all companies is a prudent approach. This fosters a level playing field while addressing legitimate concerns about data protection and national security.
Banning or forcing TikTok to be sold based on its foreign roots threatens fair competition, consumer freedom, and American economic leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Though vague, "National Security Risk" is a tall statement. It just so happened that Tiktok is way too popular, and especially close to china. Which would explain the insisting questions about the companies' relations with the CCP. Not to say that bytedance have done wrong or have done so, but its definitely a possibility and is a risk which would be bad for the national security.
