Apparently while my parents were still dating, my mom went out to dinner with my dad and the rest of his family. She ordered chicken and my grandpa turned to my dad and said, “You better marry her, she’s a cheap date.”

Chicken is actually better for you than red meat.

@@WhoyouwishyouwereYeah, chicken is used in this story but the health benefits of chicken vs. red meat wasn't part of it. 😂 What the hell?!

My mom was polite to my grandparents, to a fault almost, as they were rather brash, different socioeconomic statuses. But she made dad happy and helped around so my grandpa told my dad "Marry that woman. You will never find anyone like her again. I promise you that."

Married my wife almost 15 years ago, but her mother and sister weren’t thrilled with my wife’s choice of husband. They worried I couldn’t take care of her (jobless and not done with school at the time, and foreign to boot) so cut her off until she would come around to their thinking.
Her sister was first to make contact with us, and we spent time with our niece and connected through mutual love for her. My sister in law flipped after meeting me in person finally, and convinced my mother in law to meet me.
After having a very polite and friendly lunch with everyone where she saw our niece absolutely hanging off myself and my wife, being friendly with the SIL, and doing my best at the language to communicate with MIL, she decided I was the greatest thing since steamed buns to grace the family.
I love my wife’s family, they’re all just lovely people. My (two now) nieces are also hysterical and growing fast!

My mother, according to my grandfather on her side, did *not* have the best taste in men during her dating years. As such, he had a chandelier-type thing low in the entryway of their house. All but one man hit that thing coming in *and* out. The man who would be my mother's husband and my father hit it coming into the house the first time, *and then never again* . First time he missed the chandelier leaving, Poppy turned to my mother and said: "That's the man."

My dad more had issues with my mom’s grandfather cause he was more of a patriarch of the entire family. He tried to rule with an iron fist, and my dad, in spite of being a scrawny thing (he didn’t weigh over 100 pounds until just after his marriage).
One time when on a trip down to Florida, my dad made a joke about him getting lost. Most everyone had a laugh at the grandfather’s expense, and when my grandfather tried to bully my dad into an apology, my dad responded back “So it’s okay to degrade anyone, but not take it?” After standing up to him, my great grandfather respected him. They didn’t get along great, but then they were allowed to marry while my mom was pregnant with me.

I worked at my now wife's dad's concrete company. Mind you, this was already difficult work all while having a congenital heart defect that took 3 heart surgeries to correct. The day I outworked his main worker was the day I got pulled aside and told that my wife's favorite flowers were sunflowers and to get a big bouquet of them on our next date.
