Inducible gene expression systems enable researchers to fine-tune control of gene expression by easily turning transcription "on" or "off" and observing changes in the resulting phenotype. The cumate inducible gene expression system was developed by the National Research Council of Canada. In this system, cumate (a small, inexpensive, non-toxic molecule) induces gene expression when it is added directly to the culture medium. Cumate has no effect on the cell's protein expression and is not found in most cell culture reagents, making it an ideal inducer molecule. In this video, we will describe the elements and functions of the cumate inducible gene expression system, its advantages over classic gene expression vectors, and its applications in research. We will end the video with a short description of abm's catalogue of cumate inducible gene expression products.
