About HOW TO WATCH A MOVIE
Since first publishing his landmark Biographical Dictionary of Film in 1975 (recently released in its sixth edition), David Thomson has been one of our most provocative authorities on all things cinema. Now he offers his most inventive exploration of the medium yet: guiding us through each element of the viewing experience, considering the significance of everything from what we see and hear on-screen-actors, shots, cuts, dialogue, music-to the specifics of how, where, and with whom we do the viewing.

I was in a minimum security prison once (a precursor before reintegration) and they had a vhs system set up in all the cells (I can't recall what cable it was to connect your tv to the wall input, this was in the 90's). I remember they had Barry Lyndon on one weekend and the entire prison was fixated on it (it was like a ghost town). I had already seen it years before but I'll never forget seeing all of these hardened criminals mesmerized over a Kubrick flick.
*side note: a lot of weed got smuggled into that prison and they never played Clockwork Orange.

Kubrick not on the level of Hawks? Ha

In every way. Just because Hawks was the greatest.

Much greater than Hawks though Hawks is also great

Not only is he better than Kubrick, Hawks did it first.

David Thompson is very eloquent and well-read and that distracts from how little sense he makes.
He is a confusing mixture of edge-lordism and conformity.

I wish I would have met Stanley Kubrick who kniws what could had been had he lived.

Did these two bores just stack Hawks above Kubrick? Oh brother

David Thomson IS very unfair to Stanley Kubrick (and Sergio Leone, Brian DePalma, Polanski and several others) and I am sure it's very personal. It's a shame for he is otherwise interesting writer and film scholar.

No he’s not interesting at all. He’s eloquent and well-read and that distracts from how little sense he makes.

David Thomson saying nothing for 3 minutes. "Critiquing the films of Stanley Kubrick-" what a joke, he said nothing beyond "I don't like his films" and rambling arbitrarily about his move to England which has no relation to anything. He has no arguments, nothing to say worth considering for a moment, that counts for less than the "c" in "critique."

Eyes Wide Shut:. Nicole Kidman on the toilet, talking to Tom Cruise, peeing and wiping. Tinkle, tinkle. So daring. So groundbreaking. So annoying. I hate bathroom scenes. Too bad great talents have to degrade themselves in order to work with great directors. Yeah, I'm a prude.

That is a great scene though if only they had showed her crack more but they did
