Who's CHEAPER, Steve Or Jim? (Frugal Retirees)

- One of the few things Jim and I agree on is money and finances. We are both pretty frugal and some may even say cheap. In today's vlog we thought we would try to answer the question, who's the cheapest, Steve or Jim?
Do you have a question for us to answer in a future video? Please ask them in the comments section.

I love how laid back and calm you two are. Thanks Steve and Jim. 🌹🙋🏼♀💗
Hi Cathy, yes, that's another thing we have in common. Thanks for pointing that out. I never really thought of it. :-)
Mac and Cheese in the crock pot... yummy! You seem to be feeling much better! Have a great day both of you!
Yes! Thank you Theaterbuddy! :-)
Nice to see you Steve, have a wonderful Sunday, blessings and love
Thanks Leo and the same to you!
We were born during that time when everyone was struggling just to survive boy, I can really relate to how both of you think and applaud you for sharing
Thanks Connie!
You two are so much fun! I know you would think you're frugal but I think you're wise. We were born during that time p
Exactly. I think alot of it depends on when you were born. Thanks Connie!
So glad to see y'all on a grocery run. You two compliment each other wonderfully. ✌️❤️🙏🏼
😊 thank you Gypsy!
You guys are so cute together Steve you guys are awesome so it doesn't really matter what is Jim is yours and What is yours is Jim
Thanks BA! :-)
The classic Jack Benny skit where he is about to be robbed and the crook says to him Your Money or Your Life one of the funniest responses where Jack takes a long pause looks at the camera and says Im thinking it over haha I see both of you with a bit of a Jack Benny miserly style but in real life Jack was a very generous person the chaep guy thing was just an act. I see you and Jim as both being very kind and considerate. Most recently your homeless video proved that once again.
LOL, I'm going to have to back and watch some of the Jack Benny shows again. He was soooo funny. :-) Thankfully, we are frugal by choice. My heart goes out to those who don't have a choice. I'm also thankful that I got my grandmother's generous heart. Where did you get yours? Was it a grandparent? It's worth more than gold, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, as always Dana! :-)
@TheRetiredLife I love to help people I was a police officer for 35 years and handled many a tense situation with compassion and humor.
Love you both! Being frugal I've had to! But now it's my time to live a little! I helped raise my 3 grandchildren!
Thanks Karen! Sometimes you just have to treat yourself and splurge a little. :-)
I love your Walmart adventures...always good to see Jim as well. Cheers Steve!
Thanks Kris 👍
Of course I don't know you two at all, 😀. It seems you two are smart and practical. In the car you went through the options of eating out and I like what Jim said about if I buy a $15 steak, I don't want to ruin it. So for that, going out for a great steak seems ideal.
Exactly! Thanks for sharing Sue!
I'm glad you feeling better. Have a great day and have fun shopping.
Thanks so much Monika!
my grandma was a child in the depression and she didnt buy things that were unnecessary. she spoiled us grandkids with experiences and love but not things. and she was not afraid to give you a spanking with a hairbrush or a spoon. how a 25 year old man had grandparents who were kids iun the depression is a story i will tell but in more detail on an instagram dm. my grandmother was forward thinking in lots of ways like advocating for inclusion for the disabled before it was cool. she died in 2020 at the age of 90 and i miss her a lot. my mom was born in 1956 so i knew a lot of the references in your gravesite videos due to her and my grandma, you and jim are like my gay uncles from afar. best regards parker
Sounds like you were very lucky to have such an awesome grandma Parker! And I like the idea of being gay CZcams uncles, lol. :-) Thanks for sharing!
I can understand both of your viewpoints. I spend very little on myself but have no problem spending on others, especially members of my family. When I do spend on myself, I do seek out quality items that are value for money. I am a fan of both of your channels
Thanks for sharing Knightow and that's really nice to hear!
Love you guys. So down to earth and practical.🙂
Thanks Debra! :-)
Hey Steve, would you and Jim ever consider going to Billy Reed's for dinner? My husband and I were there the other night and it was just about $100.00 for the two of us, without alcohol! It was a special occasion though, so well worth it. We try to made dinner each night, but it's just so easy to pop something in the microwave 😀
Thanks for the suggestion Drayit! I will definitely add it to our list. I haven't been to Billy Reed's in years. I used to love their meatloaf and mashed potatoes. We are like you, mostly microwave meals, lol. :-)
It's nice to see you again Jim! I'm with you guys on the budget deal. Our last move was 18 years ago and I looked at it as our retirement home. I also downsized and decided a number of years ago to pay it off, much to my husbands dismay. However he is now happy that I did so considering my health took a turn. My motto has been plan for the worst and hope for the best. Plus as we grow older our outlook changes also. Loved the video guys! Peace...
That's my motto too Stacy. I'm happy for you. Thanks, as always, for sharing with us!
Hello gentlemen. Steve, I'm much like you. I will spend and give to others faster than spending on myself.. thankfully I have family members who appreciate this and spend on me ☺. May I say I absolutely love your home! Take care and blessings to you both. P.S. I will spend on pizza, yes indeed!😄
Sounds like you were lucky and came from a great family Mary! :-)
ALL I have to say is folks on a fixed income ( retiree's ) have to be frugal so we splurge on something when we REALLY want too.
Exactly Ted!
I think you guys have your priorities and you keep them, which is wonderful. You seem to be very well matched!
Thanks Amy. I think so too! :-)
Now a days, in a lot of ways, being cheap and frugal are the same.
True BAC!
I love your content in your videos ! I think JIm is the most frugal but maybe you are frugal too JIm ! Hi Steve and hope you are doing well ! Wednesday I go for hip rejections in both hips ! Someday in the future I will get a hip replacement the right one first ! Tuesday going for a dignostic mamogram maybe a ultra sound as they found a grey area but maybe its just a cyts or cyst that does not show up on a regular mamogram ! One time I had a mamogram then a dignostic mamogram and ultra sound and it was just a big cyst no tumour thank God ! I dont want cancer ! I have a cat to live for !
I think my mom was living for her cats too. That's why she lived so long. :-) Good luck with all the doctor appts. After we retire it's like a whole new job, lol. :-)
This is very much how I feel, and more people should live this way. Amazingly enough, lack of debt actually is an investment in happiness and joy, not to mention a level of freedom. Where we do differ a bit is how I feel about food. Nutrition is an investment in your health, and quality is huge for me. I was raised on a dairy farm in Northern California and if we didn't grow it, make it, raise it or barter for it, we didn't get it. Learning about pesticides, and all that was instilled at a young age (I'm 62 now), we grew nothing that was treated with chemicals at all. That is something that has carried over with me, is buying organic. I also stopped eating red meat as a kid, it was too painful to meet your food as a baby, raise it, play with it and then kill it to eat. I learned farm animals have personalities and emotions, like all living things, once I became aware of that, eating them was just no longer possible for me. If more people lived within their means. I have 2 vehicles over 20yrs old, a 2001 Honda mini van that I use for driving my disabled son in, and my own 2002 Subaru Outback. Neither of which, I'm convinced will ever die. I take them to the shop twice a year, after winter and before winter, and do whatever needs to be done, which is rarely more than a few hundred dollars, around the cost of a single new car payment. I don't drive a lot, living in a large city area, most things are close by. I didn't get a credit card till I was 31yrs old, and still only have one. Belonging to a credit union instead of a bank was a huge savings. So many things we can do to improve our financial health.
Thanks for the excellent advice and for sharing this with us Derek. You were very fortunate to grow up the way you did. Sounds like your parents were way ahead of their time, or you are very young. For me, financial health has been much easier to maintain in my life. Nutritional health, not always so much, but always working on it. :-)
Always love to see you both doing well!
Thanks so much Jill!
Eating out is pricey bit I love getting out. If the food is good, that's a bonus.
I think most people are like you Europa. The food is just part of the experience. Jim hates to leave the house though, so for him it's not a plus, lol. :-)
I owned a Mercedes for 20 years and it ran quite well until the last year and had to trade her in. Stouffers products are the best! The 2 of us usually eat at home too, but do eat out/order out for specialty things that are difficult to make like the restaurants do-like pizza, Chinese, Mexican. We do eat steak-just need to know how to cook it properly.
Thanks for sharing Thomas. You guys sound just like us. :-)
@@theretiredlifewithsteve yes, we are different in some ways/likes/dislikes, but amazingly like so many more of the same things.
God bless the both of take care of Steve
Thanks Sherron and you too!
Thank you both for the fun video..
Wow, Dana, once again you are way too generous! Thank you! You'll be getting another shout out and we will use this for our upcoming steak dinner. :-) Are you a steak eater?
@TheRetiredLife you bet I live in cattle country you guys enjoy 😉
:-)
I agree with you. I keep my car for an average of 10 years. I have a neighbor who leases & gets a new car every 2 yrs or so. I just can see doing that. My husband is a bit more of a spender but the bills get paid so I don’t complain. Now that we’re in our mid to late 50’s retiring is something we talks bout quite a bit. 💁🏻♀️
It makes it a bit more difficult when you're not on the same page, but then maybe it gives you more balance. Thanks for sharing with us Maryann!
Hi ! Very interesting ! I spend money on things I definitely don't need ! But now I save too and my habits have changed! I try to save more ! I only spend money on groceries and buy whatever I want to eat ! Take care ! Deborah 🇨🇦
Most people do and if it makes you happy and you can afford it, nothing wrong with that. Thanks for sharing Deborah!
Yall are Frugal in different ways that compliment each other!
Jim....you are NOT old!!! And there's nothing wrong with being frugal. My mother and sister are. I, however, while I do love a good deal, I am more likely to spend money, but I LOVE giving gifts and trying new things too!
Sounds like you have a very good balance d! 😄👍
My late mom worked at Volkswagen, so she got an employee discount for leasing a car, plus my folks weren't responsible for maintenance, which is a savings. as well as tax advantages. So, leasing if one so chooses to do so isn't all that bad. We buy Stouffers all the time, good meals wide variety as well. We order pizza here and there as Fresh Slice is right around the corner from us, cheers guys-Dan and Bill.
Hi Dan, did you change your channel name? I agree. In some cases, it might even be a plus, especially if it's a company car. I'm glad we don't have a pizza place that close though, lol. :-) Thanks for sharing.
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Really have no idea about the name change, passion for lust was a handle I have used, could because I clean my cookies but have no idea, so today I'm Dan de Lench, tomorrow who knows🤣😂😄
I am about to retire in June, so I will have to learn how to be frugal and wise to what I spend my money on. Right now, I am a spender, especially when it comes to buying cars. lol.
Once the money stops coming in from a job, it does make you think a little more about spending it. But if we can afford a few luxuries, we only live once, so why deprive ourselves. Thanks for sharing Paean109!
I like Jim’s Huntington Beach hat. Newport and Huntington beaches are my all-time favorites. Tons of great memories from my childhood.
Me too MD. It’s such a small world is it. 😎👍
There is a difference between being cheap and being frugal. Sometimes having a fun experience or special dinner etc. adds to the joy of life. We had a pool in Riverside and that did add up in expense, but it brought my wife joy and a source of exercise that was better on her joint injuries. Now that I am alone (well, me and my adult daughter) and retired, I've learned to be more frugal and trying to avoid becoming Ebenezer Scrooge in cheapness!
Hi Tom, I totally agree and there definitely is a fine line between being fruagal and Ebenezer, lol. :-)
You have to be practical in life. You also need to enjoy life. You never know when it's going to get bad or end. There is a great Mexican restaurant near the Indian Wells Country Club. Beautiful place and food. Don't remember the name.
So true James. It's a real balance. I used to work in Indian Wells. I wonder if it's the Mexican restaurant on the corner of Hwy 111 and Cook St. I used to work across the street and go there all the time. It was great!
@@theretiredlifewithsteve That was it. Cook Street
Would that be Don Diego's? I did a quick Google search 😁. It's not super near the Country Club, but right on the corner of 111 and Cook. Always on the lookout for restaurant recommendations!
I kept my car until the replacement parts were not available 🙃
LOL, my kind of car buyer! :-)
I would love it if you did a series eating out at different places in the Palm Springs area! I'd be taking notes for sure!
We are definitely planning to do that. Thanks Aksez2u!
I love the chase of a bargain. I never pay full price for anything. If it's in good condition and it's free I'll take it. No shame in my game.😂😂
I like the way you think Jody! :-) It can be a fun game. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Saving money is a good thing
Hi Colt, definitely beats the alternative, right?
@@theretiredlifewithsteve please call me Chizzie
Like my dad used to say if it ain't broke don't fix it aka a relationship like yours is one in a million. Let the good times roll.
Go out to eat when you want it and or can afford it. Stay in when it's a rainy dreary night make a home cooked comfort food meal watch a good movie .
There's too much in life to worry about.. I did save more when I was a teen and my dad helped me get my first car.. he put down $500 I paid him back.
Paid for half my house back when I was married. I'm a widower . So you know you have to just go with the flow . Be safe be well enjoy life and the beauty it brings ..
Especially nature. Beautiful animals plants flowers. Just enjoy you two .✝️☮️🕊️🌷🙆🙋🏻♀️✌️
Excellent advice DK!
Hi there! Money is a great thing to be somewhat on the same page. And....there is absolutely nothing wrong with being frugal. I see it as conserving so as you can splurge on what ever makes you really happy or need. Have a good one!!
I agree Alan. Thanks! :-)
Great video. Thanks Steve and Jim. 😊
Thanks Melissa 👍
I find that the older I get, the less I want. I'm happy with a smaller house. We have a pool too, but my husband handles all the maintenance. It feels good to jump in after a long day at work. BTW, I wish my fridge and pantry was as neat as yours.
I totally agree User. And we are both neat freaks too, lol. :-)
Jim all the way
You both a good couple
LOL yes. :-)
We like your new mustache Steve. We shop at Frys and Kroger store. We don't go to Walmart because things cost more and we buy more than we need.
Hi Alice, that's awesome that you found places even cheaper than Walmart. Thanks for sharing that!
I’m with you on cars, Steve. Right now we have 2006 & 2009 Hondas and both have 300,000+ miles!!!! I like to drive them until they don’t pass smog, or repairing them is less than a car payment!
My kind of car owner Kim, lol! :-)
Well gentlemen with age comes wisdom 👌
Hopefully! :-)
Love this videos!❤
Thanks Ernest!
There is nothing wrong with being cheap.
I agree USA! For some reason, being frugal and saving is often looked down on in our culture. Kind of backwards, if you ask me, lol. :-)
Sometimes a store will put something on sale that is or about to expire or has not been selling well and that could be stale . Saving money is great but buyer beware of some store products on sale smell, touch and check for sale by date so your not buying a set to expire product . Also check your cans for any dents that can cause a issue with the interior seal.
Thanks Deborah. Good suggestions.
I would like for you to explore properties for sale around Palm Springs and adjoining
areas. Hopefully, the RE agents would be agreeable to letting you walk around with a camera as being free promotion for their listing. My husband walks to Ralphs every day and will only buy items that are marked down. He looks for what he thinks will be future markdowns by their expiration date and then he waits ready to pounce on the markdown guy when he rolls the cart out of the back rooms. I stay home. Once he bought 5 cherry pies because they were so cheap and he couldn't help himself.
LOL, that sounds smart Norm, as long as you can eat that fast. :-) And thanks for the suggestion. I definitely plan to show more Palm Springs homes this year. Thanks!
Frugal is kinda smart and vegan thing didn't work for me either it's alot of work but staying healthy
LOL, I know right?! :-)
You two should go shop at Grocery Outlet/Bargain Market, Big Lots ( yes they sell food items), All A Dollar stores, and 99 cents stores. You would be surprised at what you will find at these places.
Thanks for the suggestion Rebecca. I did a video about our 99 cent store a while back, and Grocery Outlet and Big Lots is on my list for the future. :-)
Since i retired i found i can do without ng the material things, lije new furniture, iphone, car, etc. So i splurge on myself with the little things. Im going to die anyway and im not going to live on the cheap my final years. Now is when you should be spending your money, not trying to save more. At least that is my opinion
I know what you mean West. But if you happen to end up needing assisted living or some other long term care, it would pretty miserable if you couldn't afford it. Unfortunately, it's a guessing game. :-O
You two need to hear yourselves- "frugal" is one way of putting it :) Word to the wise...when you die, you can't take it with you.
Very true Ellen. I say that all the time. That's why we never deprive ourselves of anything we really want. We just don't want much. Thanks for sharing!
Retirement life plays a part. Just do a few fun splurges occasionally. Enjoy what you can.
I agree Julia. There needs to be a balance. You can't take it with you! :-)
WOW at 5:18 that burrito is $ 7.97. Is that like family size or one single serving. here at my Florida Walmart which is cheaper than our Florida Publix's I pay $3:78 for the single stack one and $3:87 for the single meatloaf. i have found that the Walmart brands of food taste just as good if not better than the higher price brands. Enjoyed the video. yes, would like to see some California eating places that are local to the area and chain places to compare prices.
I agree Daniel and thanks for the feedback. Will do!
My husband and I are coupon clippers. We save save save. He recently purchased a truck after driving his jeep for 20 years. My vehicle is 10 yrs old, would like to get another 10 out of it. I'd like my husband to retire early at 60 (in 9 years) and just enjoy put away the stress. He makes way more than me but we have no debt. Im 7 yrs younger and we can easily make it on my income if needed.
You two sound very smart. Thanks for sharing with us Sardar!
Steve is very careful with his lodging. I’m going to guess Steve👍😻. Always buy a used car from a little old lady. I bought a Ford Escape with 28 thousand miles, from a nice lady and I still have it👍. I enjoy quick meals, or crock pot dinners. Always cheaper👍😻
Actually, I always buy new, but I keep them forever. I never trust used cars. Glad you got lucky with yours!
Hi Steve & Jim happy new year I've been having some time to myself that's why I've not been watching your videos I'll promise I'll catch up ❤️
Hi Marie, time to yourself is important. Hope you're enjoying it. Sometimes you have to step away from the screen and social media! :-)
Yes Steve can be stressful not that you are i love to watch your videos I'm a disabled lady say hi to Jim for me ❤️😃
I grew up poor so no what it is like not having funds to acquire things. Now, that I am old, I am less frugal (because I have more funds) and will buy something if I want it or need it...primarily from Amazon and groceries either from Ralphs or Wal-MArt.
👍
Omg. So I’m not the only person that makes a game/lifestyle out of saving money. My big thing is food waste. I have not thrown away enough food in the last 40 years to few me for a couple week. Btw I just bought the exact same fridge. Good deal 1100 here in Vegas.
I agree Gary, it's way more fun than spending money, lol. :-) I don't think we've ever thrown any food away either. We bought our fridge about a year and a half ago. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was a good deal and I think around the same price as yours. Should last until we did, lol. :-)
Where were both you guys born and raised? what college did both you guys go to? what did you major in? Thank You Steve.
Great questions Richard. We will answer in a future video. Thanks! :-)
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Looking Forward To That Video Steve. Thank You.
I think you both are about the same when it comes to being Frugal. I really enjoyed the video, God Bless Guys. take care.
Thanks Shannon and you too!

Had a fast food chicken meal last week at a well-known chain. Wrap & Large Soda were a little over $13. Food was good, but still too much dollar-wise. Not gonna do it again anytime soon!
I agree Gail. Rediculous prices. Denny's still has low prices and large portions on some of their items.
Do you have a Papa Murphy's take n bake pizza near by? $5 for a large on Friday. I get the sausage and add extra toppings.
Never heard of them. That's a great deal Christine. Lucky you!
Have you ever shopped at Aldi’s? I like to shop there occasionally. You ought to check them out if there’s one nearby, they have some pretty good prices. Stay safe guys.
Hi Peggy, only once. I heard that they were closing all of their stores. Not sure if that's true though.
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I’ve not heard that, hope it’s only a rumor. If you do go though, you need a quarter for a cart (which you will get back upon return) and your own bags. That’s how it is here in Alabama. Might be fun to try somewhere different. 😀
I can afford anything I want but I refuse to pay the prices today.......
I get that 👍
So now that you are retire, are you still doing cemeteries? This is Colorado Martini BTW. This is our cemetery site.
Hi CM, Yes, I still have The Graveyard Channel. I just reached 100K subscribers. Quite the milestone for me and very unexpected. I also have this channel, for fun and personal videos. I'm sure I will always do both channels. Thanks for letting us know. about your revamped cemetery channel. I will definitely check it out. :-)
Steve ♥️
I use to waste money but now I’m almost 62 I look after my money more. And I have had thousands of cars and motorcycles in my time. But I’ve had my wife for 42 years 😁
LOL, at least you kept the most important one. :-)
Hi Steve and Jim 😊I love seeing you too together 😊you are very mutch alike 😊I think you should go out for dinner once a month
We are going to start doing that. Thanks Kathleen!
What jobs did you and Jim have before retirement?
Hi Suzanne, one of our first videos was on this topic. Just search this channel or scroll back to the beginning to watch it. Thanks!
Was your pool already in when you bought the house?
No. We bought the house new and then added the pool a month after we moved in. The pool was around $30,000, but worth every penny, in my opinion. :-)
It’s easy to spend; dr Jekyll here
:-)
?????...
Me , I'm a little bit frugal guy
😊👍
If you are not being frugal, you are probably overpaying! Steve, do you and Jim still watch movies? There is a movie on Peacock "SICK", yes it is a slasher, but actually has a modern day plot,
That's another things Jim and I do agree on. Neither of us can watch slasher movies. Way to scary and gruesome for us. :-O
You're thrifty! Me, too!
That's a good word for it. Why spend more if you don't have to, right? :-)
@@theretiredlifewithsteve Absolutely! I refuse to pay full price if I don't have to! Always look for discounts, manager's specials, clearance, etc. It's sometimes hit or miss, but you never know what you'll find! On my last visit to my local Ralphs, I purchased 5 bottles of $8.99 hair conditioner for $.80 each. One of my best buys in quite awhile.
little Caesars
I'm calling frugal fail. Saving money is a game. You should be reading the grocery ads and stopping at other markets for their ad items too. Walmart is not always the lower price. Then it becomes a game of time verses money. lol
Thanks for the tip Tom. I'm sure you're right and we could definitely be a lot more frugal, but then I wouldn't have much time left to make CZcams videos, lol. :-)
I don't have anything to add, except you two are CUTE!
Thanks Janet! :-)
Have you ever had any pets?
Great question Shilieha, we will answer it in a future video! :-)
Steve did you know that Gina Lollabrigitta died today?
Yes. Boy, what a long life she lived. I'll be mentioning her in my month end in memoriam video. Thanks Nancy!
Does Jim have a time consuming hobby?
Yes, video games. I made a video about it on this channel. It was one of the first videos we did.
Do you guys ever buy lottery tickets?
We haven't in a while, but bought one the other day when it got over $1 billion, lol. :-) How about you?
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I occasionally buy a few scratch offs. Not too many
I do all my shopping at Walmart on line. I don’t go into the stores that much anymore.
Hi David, I can't believe how popular that is becoming. We see more store shoppers than regular shoppers now. Maybe we will try it at some point.
