oh i love this game. it reminds me so much of the little big planet games. specifically the big adventure game. the way he moves just lights up my heart with what is probably specific nostalgia
I'm actually looking at Sackboy's Big Adventure to be inspired by how they did the visuals (also looking at Tearaway) :)
Looking great so far man! The movement combinations really make me want to play the game now as I love combo-ing dives and double jumps.
aaah! You're too kind! yeah I need to make some levels where you can really have fun with the movement just like the first controller test I did :)
Awesome devlog! The game looks really good already, love watching the streams! These will be a nice way to follow along outside the streams!
I really appreciate that Codeer! Yeah I hope that it will be a great way for people who can't watch the stream to stay up to date with the game.
Your premise as a content creator sounds awesome based on your backgrounds alone! Not only am I very curious to see where you take the game but to also watch any videos about the different aspects of game development from your differing points of view ie: Level designer, programmer and producer.
Looking forward to more from you mate
Thank you so much! I hope to dive into those aspects of gamedev as well in future videos :) Thanks for the sub as well!
It's nice to see you do devlogs now. You are truly inspiring. Keep up the great work!
hehe thank you so much! I just try to work hard and spread joy. If that inspire someone then I'm happy :)
really enjoyed this! I'm excited to see how things keep progressing! I was really surprised to hear you were insecure about the art, because I really love the look of the game so far. Definitely really looking forward to hearing more about the story, too.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it Jamie! I think I'll always be insecure about my art. With that said, I've never been more secure about it either than now :D
I loved treetops in Spyro 1.
It was like all the practices in navigation and supercharge culminated in this level where you have motion gameplay, controlling a character that needed to puzzle solve while on the go
oh yeah the treetops were too hard for me when I was young :D
Yes! Love that you're here now with devlogs. Let's gooo!
hehe it's about time I started doing this seriously!
This is an impressive job, and seeing the Devlog I can tell that you really have experience and know what you're doing, this is super insightful!
I appreciate that Tomás! I'm still getting better at art but the other parts should.. have some experience at least :D
I've seen some of this in Twitter and love that you are making a devlog
hehe I know I try to be everywhere :D Thanks for watching it!
Devlog looks so great! My favourite thing is the art style
Same, and the chicken running!
Great work man! You really do seem to have something special here, looks great!
Hey I really appreciate that! I don't take those comments for granted!
I see so much potential in this project Kev! Keep pushing forward, wanna see more!
Thank you so much for the support! I wanna do more :D
The movement already looks great. Thats such an important part of a game.
Thank you! Yeah that was my first priority :)
So as a fan of Mario 64 and the first Sonic Adventure, I love the idea of a semi-open hub world that leads to the levels. This means you can choose how each level functions separately, and you could even do a blend of linear and non-linear levels, basically whatever works for each level’s theme. Plus you can unlock new areas of the hub world as you progress, either by way of new mechanics or just simply unlocking new spots.
Regardless, I love the style you have so far and it looks genuinely fun. Seems like something that would be fun to make! I look forward to seeing your progress!
I really appreciate that! I do think I have some idea that would make you happy :) I'm working on a new devlog so I hope to have it out not too far from now!
The game looks super kool. I really like the art style of the game. The character movement looks smooth and fun. Keep it up! :)
I really appreciate that! I've worked hard for this and I can't wait to share more :)
Seems very solid! Only thing I would say is personally, I like to be able to move faster when not precision jumping, so a run button/action would be nice if it doesn't exist yet. I like the artwork and precision of the movements. Hope to see more from this, not enough 3d platformer exist in my opinion.
Thank you so much! Yeah there is a sprint button, not sure why I missed to show that properly :D
it feels really nice just from watching keep up the good work
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
Following your steps along Twitter!! Nice prototype you have there bro! Looks fun and nicer everytime!
Keep it up!
Thank you thank you! I appreciate that!
Love it, such a cute character and world design
Thank you so much Kyle! Your videos are an inspiration!
Really nice! Movement looks good and the puzzles on different stages looked like they could be very interesting. Didn't get to see any combat but it's a great start!
Hey thanks Shawn! Yeah the combat is there but it doesn't look that impressive. It won't be that complex but just a little simple moves that you can do.
Looks amazing! I love the cardboard/clay look to it! I personally think it would be a good idea to make a main hub place with some mini parkour along the edges, some short levels, and some longer levels. When I play giant 1-level platformers I tend to get bored after a while because it seems to go on and on without an end.
Thank you! Yeah right now (in later videos) it's a hub area that you can explore and help characters, when you've gathered enough orbs you can then enter these portals/books that lead to linear levels. Almost like Spyro for PS1.
a bit late to this but for level design, i love how super mario galaxy has you explore the same level several times, with each being a little different and making the world feel more dynamic
That's a nice touch for sure! :)
I subscribed for the "Buk Buk" lol
Amazing job, keep up the amazing work!
haha so glad I added that in the game then :D
Instantly reminded me of craftworld. The art even in early stage looks nice already.
Good job and goodluck Kevin.
I really appreciate that! Thank you. I'm surprised how well things went in the beginning :D
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMGGGGG I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEE THIS ART STYLEEEEE!! The cardboard is OUTSTANDING and the crinkled Papier is soo niceee!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORKKK
AAAHH What a lovely comment! Thank you Colin :D
Great to see an overview of where the game is at so far and hearing some of your thoughts behind the game! Looking forward to more :)
Appreciate that! Yeah I do understand that not all can stay the entire livestream or see all tweets so a video like this is good!
Wow, this is incredible. It's like a game from the media molecule
Oh wow thank you so much! That's a very kind compliment!
I love this!! I've accompaning your work in twitter for a while now and I really see this game's potential. Good luck on your journey!!
hehe thank you! Yeah I like to post there a lot :D
Love the jumping/movement, this already looks better than A Hat In Time IMO. Feels like we're getting a 3d platformer renaissance after a drought for so many years.
Personally a big fan of the big open level, and also big open hub worlds. I loved Mario Galaxy 1 as it actually had a nice mix of big and small levels and inbetween, some linear and some more open. It meant you never got exhausted on a single playstyle and you had a lot of freedom to jump around when you started to get bored of one zone.
Oh wow thank you so much! Hopefully I'll live up to the excitement :D
I hope to mix some various sizes in the levels to not have one formula and follow that for 4-6 times over and over. I should also replay Galaxy again!
This looks great. I love seeing developers make great games
hehe thanks! :D
Kevin on CZcams is exactly what this world needs.
Excited to see your progress with this game! Looks super fun, and I'm looking forward to watching you flesh out this world.
oh wow Thomas! You're too kind! I really need to step up my game now :D
cool devlog, keep it up! :)
Thank you so much! After all these years watching your videos I felt I wanted to join in on the fun! :)
This seems awesome, keep it up! Can't wait for the next video!
Thank you thank you! There are currently 3 videos but I try to post around the 20th every month (this month will be later due to deadline and also moving to a new house)
Great stuff Kevin! Looking forward to seeing more of your Devlogs. It certainly helps understanding the process of something like this.
Thanks Christopher! Yeah it will be interesting to share some my of thought process
The style of the game is just soo good, keep it up! :)
I really appreciate that! Thank you :D
Looks amazing! Can't wait to see more
Thank you! I'm excited to share more about what's going on :)
Bro i haven't even watched the first 10 seconds of the video, and i already love the art style for this game!
haha amazing! Hope you kept watching :D
This looks amazing can't wait for the next devlog
hehe thank you! I'm writing it right now actually so not TOO far from it.
Been following this project for a while and am excited to see how it progresses!!!
Thanks Markus, are you possibly the same Markus Persson that stops by the stream?
@@WhyKev the one and only
I love how this is labeled #0! LOL! Kev, you're doing a fantastic job and already this game is looking phenomenal. I KNOW, with time, you'll come up with a compelling story similar to the "dynamic duos" listed, and I think that will come from within in time. For now, you've done an awesome job planting seeds and watering them.
haha I heard that starting with #0 was a good idea! I think there's a good start :D Thank you so much for the kind words Nate
Amazing Video! keep them up
Thank you thank you! :D
The animations are amazing, and the artwork is beautiful! Good job!!
Looks great so far!! I’ve been following you on tiktok for a bit and was very happy when your CZcams channel was recommended to me!
Oh really? that's amazing to hear! I should try and get more serious on TikTok again. I did it for one month and that was fun.
@@WhyKev Mm! Tiktok is a good to bring people to your CZcams channel I think, Idk I feel like it’s easier reaching people on tiktok… Though I personally more enjoy CZcams devlogs as it feels more personal in a way to me! I’ll be on the lookout for any new devlogs you post, your game looks really fun! :))
@@melkerhallstrom9339 That's actually a good point, I should mention that I have a channel on youtube if they want longer content.
@@WhyKev Yeah, for sure! That’s a good Idea!
Hey man! I've been following your work over on Reddit. It's so good to see you're doing devlogs now. Can't wait to see where this project will take you!
Hey! Thank you so much for that! I've been bad a posting on reddit but I really appreciate that you found my video here :)
Looks amazing man!
Love to follow your thinking process and game development, so you better keep posting! 🤩
Thanks Ludvig! I'll make sure to keep posting and sharing my thoughts :D
This looks absolutely incredible :0 I'm a big fan of how this has turned out so far
You have no idea how happy this makes me to know that the "old" devlogs are still being watched :)
Nice work Kev, the devlog itself is really well made and is fun to watch!
I am really looking forward to seeing where this game goes!
Thanks a ton Saul! This might be the devlog that I'm most happy with, it's nothing too crazy but it's a great start.
Off to a great start with the devlogs Kev! I look forward to watching even more chicken game gamedev content!
Hey thank you so much! I'll make sure to provide more chicken game gamedev content :D
looks great man! I can't wait to see this game and I love the idea! I feel like it has a bit of that little big planet in it!
Hey I really appreciate that! Yes I've taken inspiration from Little Big Planet and also Tearaway :)
It's very cool seeing/hearing the thoughts behind this project! Looking forward to follow along😁
Hopefully I'll dive more deeper on certain topics in future videos! Thanks for being there!
I love the art how the game looks
Appreciate it Ducky!
There is never too many devlogs in YT! Thanks for sharing your proggression.
That's good, I hope there's a little room for me :)
Man, this already looks like a finished game!
Can't wait to see where this project is going.
oh wow that means a lot! I hope to push it a little further. We'll see how that goes :D
Looks awesome man. Its munkeysocks btw! Ha! Keep up the good work.
hehe hey! Thanks for hanging out in the stream and watching the devlog!
Excited to see your journey on this game! It's looking great already Kev!
Joe, thank you so much! Your support along the way is amazing as always!
Am looking forward to playing it's amazing better not disappear on us for a long time
I appreciate that! I don't know how often I plan to make videos but don't worry I have no plans to stop working on this.
Looking great! Love 3D-platformers myself so your game looks very promising!
I really appreciate that Spacebar! I'll do my best to make it the best I can make it :D
looks awesome!
I really appreciate that! :)
Smart choices, good art and mature enough to work with milestone's. This is truly professional work
Thank you! I try to be mature and make sure I'm not wasting anyones time (mine included).
This is gonna be frickin sweet 🔥
Hopefully I'll pull it off :D
Great stuff! I'm excited to follow this :D
hey thank you so much! I'm excited to make more progress so I can make another video :)
Nicely done. I like your plan, especially since I can't watch live streams.
This motivates me to make more videos as well :D
Really great video! Thanks for posting
Appreciate that! :)
It is looking so great! Love the artstyle
Thank you so much, I'm also a big fan of this
As a big fan of Tearaway, I love the I fluency on your game
Very glad to hear that! I'm also a big fan of Tearaway :)
That mechanical one looks beautiful
Hey thanks! I like it as well :)
Ohhh yeah remember seeing this on vimlark's stream, good luck w the game
That's right, he played this a while back! Thank you so much!
Awesome work!
Thank you thank you!
You’re the best, Kev.
No you are!
The look of the game is awesome. Especially the cardboard gears, I just love how it looks. Also, have you heard of Billy Hatcher and the giant egg? That was one of my favorite 3D Platformers growing up; and I think it might be good inspiration for your game. As for ideas for levels, it depends on what you wanna go for. Combat, Puzzles, Tons of NPC interaction with quests, etc.
Thank you so much Reditect, I haven't played it myself but I've seen some gameplay of it. Might need to dig a bit more into that game :)
Can't wait for the next episode
I'm actually motivated to get going right away actually
Hello here too! Keep up the good work! :D
Well hello you :D Thanks for watching it!
i really like the art style
Hey thanks a lot! Makes me happy!
3:30 why does that look like it could be a pretty cool main menu screen
Oh wow! That would be cute if you idle for long enough the yellow chicken appear!
Wow, inspiring that you had the time & motivation after work to get this far already! Personally, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the 3D platformer I enjoyed the most.
Thanks a ton! I'm playing through Mario Galaxy 1 right now so will eventually get to that one :)
i like it somehow, looks pretty decent the animation, movement and envoirement.
Thank you! Since I have more time before the game is finished I think it's a good starting point :)
I personally love it and have wanted you to release something ever since that penguin prototype you mention here and, as you know, even long before this when you worked on a similar prototype/jam game that had a rotating puzzle world (because I kept hassling you to make another)! I think you really nail it with this sort of style. TaniNani is a good example of a charming little game you've managed to release, so I don't see why you can't do something like this.
How big of a game to make this one, however, I haven't the faintest idea. That's where I see the biggest challenge. But I like how you're looking into vertical slice territory. That seems to me like a good direction. Perhaps you can vertical slice one type of level/hub and then step back, reassess, and if it looks promising still, try a totally different vertical slice. By the time you've got a few polished slices, you might have much clearer idea of what you want to and can reasonably build.
Regardless, I'm so glad you chose to share all this with us. Keep up the awesome work! I'll catch you again on the live streams! (:
hehe I remember that! I feel like this is the perfect style for that kinda game!
I will probably make some sort of hub/first level and test it on more people. Take my time with it because I don't want to waste this opportunity. I really appreciate all your support Drew!
THE GAME LOOKS LIKE WILL BE VERY FUN LOVE THE RUN
Thank you! Hopefully I'll get there :D
@@WhyKev just played demo loved it left a review via form which part would need some tweaking.
Looks fun!
Hey thanks!
This game looks a bit like Super Mario 3D world, but at the same time feels like the gameplay is gonna be something else
I take that as a compliment :D I'm indeed inspired by Mario 3D World in some sense.
Ok now you have to tell us what you know about how to make a fun game! That would be gold
hehe well I'm no expert but a good way to start is to try and make the tiniest thing player always do fun. In this game, you move and jump. Make that adorable and feel nice. Or if you've got a shooter game then make shooting boxes feel fantastic. Might not be the best tip from a comment here but that's often where I start. The small thing that you always do in a game, make that fun.
Nice, looks amazing :) Will definitely follow your journey. I guess your character controller is Rigidbody based?
Thank you so much! Actually no, I wanted to try and write one myself but I will change over to Rigidbody because there are some parts that gets easier. Dynamically interact with physics objects will be easier if it's rigidbody.
Amazing game and video and also u are very handsom
haha wow all three? that's amazing :D You made my day!
Looks amazing will there be way more devlogs and did you take some inspiration from paper mario?
I want to make more devlogs which is a good sign :) Oh yeah I did look at paper mario how they achieve their paper look.
0:39 jumpscare here
haha sorry, it's often the reaction I get when people see me
You should make a bunch of the enemies designs look like the 2d coragated cardboard, that way it fits the style but is easier to model
ooh that's a fun idea!
the art style looks amazing, well done. what engine are you using?
Thank you! I'm using Unity
nice video
Thanks :D
I've always wanted to see this in devlog form, I've popped in a few streams but the condenced format of devlogs is always appreciated. I wrote down a few notes if you're interested? I'm not an editor or anything and I've been trying to make my own devlogs for a while but keep ditching them so I'm probably not the best person to take advice from but here's what I got anyway:
- Maybe introduce yourself earlier and briefly mention TaniNani & Hoplegs, kinda show people who aren't from twitter who you are and the general vibe of your games.
- The first 10 seconds are cool, but instead of starting the narrative from that point maybe tease the visuals from current version beforehand?
- When listing the games that inspire this one maybe show some footage of those games or a screenshot? Personally I don't know all of these games so some visuals might help communicate what aspects of each game you are pulling from.
- Maybe cut to some footage of the twitter feed when talking about it as visual proof of people getting excited about it?
All that being said I did enjoy the video and am looking forward to future devlogs :D
Hey thanks for stopping by the stream! Yeah I know it can be nice to just watch a few minutes of a video to get some sort of summary and concentrated thoughts. I really appreciate the feedback! I'll take that with me for next video!
I'll help write the pitch if you like. I have some small talent. Maybe someone more skiled already offered, but you got it yourself anyway. Playing as a "clay chicken" IS the pitch. The market(s) will demand more words, presumably. That's your essential value proposition, though. Play as a clay chicken. Anyone who doesn't want to play a clay chicken probabaly doesn't game anyway.
haha this is golden! :D
game loking sick
Thanks, I think I can push it a bit further :)
El arte del juego esta genial.
Hey thank you so much for that! Means a lot :)
This is devlog 0 damn man
Hopefully next will be just as good :D
I have questions : )
- are you working on this completely alone?
- how much time took you to do those 4 milestones?
- can you please move your camera to the corner of the screen in the next videos :P ? would be great to see more gameplay video
1. I have a composer that helps out with audio
2. So it took 3 months outside of the dayjob to finish the three milestones, starting the fourth one now :)
3. haha yes I can :D
I loved the concept of the game and how good it looks but i think the colors need to be more vibrant just a suggestion
Thank you so much! Yeah that's something I need to go over :)
Hey love the way the game is going so far! Personally I think that one big 'island' or level would work the best because it would look really good with the games visuals and make the world seem more connected. Also just some constructive criticism YT wise I think you had everything down for a good thumbnail but the positioning is really strange and almost has that beginner who used templates look.
Right now I'm testing with one open level with linear paths here and there, we'll see how it feels.
What would you change with the positioning? Is it that the camera is too far away from the player?
@@WhyKev honestly I'm not quite sure without being able to play around with it but I think it might be the text positioning that makes it look a little strange because the character is centered and the text is rotated to the far left maybe with the text in the middle it could look a bit better?
@@abutterYT Good thing the thumbnail can change. I'll go look at what others have done as well now that I think about it.
Also...one little part reminds me of Ratchet & Clank (2 "Going Commando") w/ the map rotation
edit: which you, literally, just said. Maybe I should finish the vid before commenting :)
haha no this is good! Yeah I think there will be some smaller segments in the game where I have those puzzles
Cant wait to play this on probably June 2nd cuz thats my birthday and im getting a pc on that day
The only public thing is the controller test somewhere on Itch. The full game is still a long way to go :) congrats on getting a new PC
@@WhyKev thx
nice! take my sub!
I'd be happy to!
