In this CZcams video, I'm showing the process of building a vibrant and durable garden bench perfect for springtime, using just seven 2x4 studs.
Key learning points from the video:
- Selection of Materials: Emphasizes the importance of choosing kiln-dried, heat-treated 2x4s for durability and minimal moisture content.
- Attention to Detail: Highlights the need to select the best boards and edges for the seat to ensure comfort and aesthetic appeal.
- Measurements and Cutting: Demonstrates how to measure, cut, and drill with accuracy to ensure all parts fit together perfectly.
- Protective Painting: Stresses the significance of painting each piece before assembly to protect the wood from weathering and to add vibrant color to your garden.
- Assembly Tips: Offers practical advice on threading dowels, spacing slats, and securing the structure, including alternative methods for those with limited tools.

I always loved this project and made mine from your first vid. I went subtle and opted for neon pink, my wife loved it!! 😂😂
This will be my Mother-in-Laws Mothers day gift. She's in her 80's!
You should definitely do a video dedicated to refinishing outdoor furniture.
I like the no nonsense way you present your videos.
Just when I was thinking, “You could’ve used pocket holes for that” you mentioned it. Nicely done!
Hey long time no comments. Hey I still have my bench I built from your video from 11 years ago setting on the front porch still as strong as day one.
The block of wood with the screw in it is absolutely genius. Nice build and very sturdy ❤❤
Too funny, I've been thinking about making a bench and remembered that you made this bench years ago and just watched that video again yesterday and now you've just released a video of an alternative version of it! 😂
Always good to see Steve build something!
Hes one of the few CZcamsrs that actually do anymore. Now it's just tool testing videos
Hi Steve nice to see you back doing what you are good at, I hope you and everyone are well, I know you mentioned you had issues, you are a lovely guy and have really helped me learn bit by bit this lovely craft, thank you for all your help 😊
Nice build, thanks for sharing.
When painting long pieces such as those at 05:05 I put a screw part-way into the end of each piece, then rest them on the two rails spaced apart at a distance a little longer than the length of the pieces. This allows them to rotate so that all the faces can be painted at one session.
Steve I don’t know why I never thought of making painting blocks using scrap wood and screws like that. It’s an amazing idea. Thanks for sharing
I’ve used different sizes of “mending plates” too. Sometimes I just need a larger footprint for stability.
Good tip for squaring off the ends on longer lengths of timber, like 4.8mor 6m, on a drop saw - cut it slightly longer than what you need and then go back and cut the end square. That way you're not trying to wrestle with a length that is mostly overhanging the bench which is both unsafe and harder to get it to the right position.
Your videos, including this one, are clear, detailed and well explained. Thank you for inspiring us to build projects.
Here in Pennsylvania the cost is about $4 each 2or so that is a cost of $30 screws included. With just hand power tools it takes about an hour to build each (less each if you make several at once).
But you could save a few $ if you use 2x3's for the seat.
Nice job. In my area if you don’t close in the deep space between the legs, you will have wasp nests, as that space makes a beautiful home for them. Don’t ask me how I know! Thanks for sharing
Gosh has it been ten years since you made the last one? I've been watching you that long???
Nice newsletter and video your comment about the great time in the snow got me laughing bench look good well made
I absolutely love your build project videos. I remember the first bench. (I'm an old coot who has watched since you and Barney and Fred started on CZcams.) I am planning to build this bench for my son's front door entry way. Thanks for the video. You are the best.
I love the creativity culture podcast!
Oh thank you! 😊
Thanks for sharing.
A tiny detail, but well played with your patreon lists of donors. Setting the lists in the darker areas of the shots so they are visible. Perfect.
Also, nice build as well.
I'm glad you gave us the name of your podcast! I've been going crazy looking for the Stev in Marin podcast.
old school reference! 🤣 🤣
Those drills are frickin gorgeous.
Great, clean project. I love the simplicity and definitely the color splash !!! ❤
I made the miter station, it is awesome. I just used it the other day and will use it again this weekend. The www course is great. Have been following Steve for 10+ years.
A perfect garden bench!
Hi, Steve. Always great to hear from you. This reminds me another bench you made a few years ago when your garden was remodeled. A very nice job, as usual. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
you're doing it again.... im getting the itch to go back to the garage and make something!
This reminds me of the Harmony bench from The Weekend Woodworker, just less fancy! Thanks Steve cheers
Haha it does! Kind of the discount version 😂
Love this one
I love this bench. Simple yet elegant and effective! I’m considering building a few to have throughout my trails. Thanks for sharing :)
Stunning bench, Steve! Amazing work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I was hoping to see you sit on it. Great project!
Great job as always Steve... thank you for your efforts...🤘🤘🤘
KDHT, not a lot of makers explained these markings, that's a great beginning and even intermediate tip!
I cannot believe you didn’t sit on it in the end! You have left me so very unsatisfied 😂
He's sitting on it at the start of the video...
Watch from the start he is sitting on it.!
@@philquinn6375oh thank god, he is sitting on it! Oh I feel so much better now 🎉
@tayloranderson4664 I not satisfied. He needed to sit on it in the yard.
Love the bench. Love the color. 😁👍
Good tutorial, Steve!
Nice looking bench Steve!
Thanks
Nice bench. I always love the building something videos.
I'm going to build this for the nearby bus stop.
Waiting riders have nothing there. Just a sign.
Really turned out great Steve....Also enjoy your videos!
I generally enjoy your videos and projects. You have always kept with the original mission of making woodworking fun, simple, practical and affordable.
Very nice build Steve! 👍👍🔨🔨
Great bench! You're looking lean Steve, you need to get Paul on your workout regiment 😂
Hi Steve, love the content you produce.
Do the dowels connecting the seat slats have something on them to protect them from the weather?
It's a great project, but I'd recommend pressure treated lumber and coated deck screws. I know the whitewood you used, and the construction screws are all painted, but in my experience, the rain will still destroy them both if they aren't under a roof of some sort. And yes, the pressure treated lumber is not as good of a quality, and usually super wet, but both of those problems can be mitigated if you are resourceful.
Would this work as well using pressure treated wood? Where I live we get a whole lot of rain. I always appreciate your videos, thanks so much for your dedication!
That's a really neat bench Steve! Thank you for showing us the build process. Some plans, perhaps not yours, are not exactly self explanatory. 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Snobby people: What color are YOUR tools?
Steve: Yes 🎉
What kind of exterior paint do you recommend going over bare cedar? Do I have to use a primer first if the paint says it has primer in it? Asking bc I'm wondering if cedar would be a different situation than the wood you use. Thanks. Love your videos!
Very nice bench and doesn't look all that 2x4'y (remember Crate Furniture? : ). This looks like a smaller version of the archery setup benches we use at our state shooting ranges which I like since you can sit and plop and open the the gun/bow case on a stable surface.
Steve as always your awe inspiring. Continue in your journey to inspiring us.
Is there any Easter sale for your courses? Thanks
What no Cobra and Bubbles on the bench to close out the video. 🤪
Just kidding. Great. Idea. Love how you talk through the thoughts of each step. Looks great
Hi Steve, do you have any resources on what can be made with hand tools only?
🖖
Great stuff, any idea why the edges on the 2x4s are rounded 😊
The lumber industry figured out be rounding edges. You prevent cracking and splintering.. plus hard corners will cut into next board slowing down the stacking and moving aspects of transport
💜💜
When I read 2x4 studs my Lego brain immediately thought "How did they get that much Lego?"
Bueno
Nice! Would it be a good idea to make this one in cedar and leave it unfinished?
I think it would still be a good idea to add a good exterior finish 👍
5:38
5:02 the last one of WHAT
Nice bench, but how much does it weigh?
About 7 2x4s
Newbie question of the day... Where does one find KDHT lumber? The big box stores (I know...) list KDHT as out of stock and unavailable to order and specifically list all the rest of their lumber as green in the description.
Your local big box store should have some. Don't order wood online though, they'll just send you lemons.
@@george_o_wilson4290 Never do. I do a bit of home renovation and such so I get a lot of the green stuff from the big box stores, but haven't really gotten involved in a lot of the projects that require the better dried project wood so did just the quick online check of the stock at the store which led to the question... Appreciate it.
using 2x4s would consume alot of wood.
bench top as hardly 1-1.5 inch thick would be more than enough though and will reduce the over all weight of bench too 🤔
Lots of options in woodworking!
In California, that bench might go 10 years without painting. For those of us with 50 inches of rain and summer temps of 95 and up, it's not likely.
... Have you always had an arm tattoo? I've been watching you for 10 years and I feel like this is the first time I've noticed.
Nice sturdy garden bench. I just find the overall leg construction to be just too clunky with no real design or style. Some limited tapers here and there might make it look a little bit less chunky, but still be robust & garden worthy. Anyhow, thats how we all get ideas & thanks.
You can certainly add whatever flair you like. This channel is focused on entry level woodworking.
12:07 Heavy and sturdy are not equal. My ex wife is in no way sturdy.
That is not sturdy, just heavy, and top-heavy at that.
Think center-of-gravity and load transmission. The majority of vertical load goes through 16 screws, resisted by their shear strength. In case of uneven loading, we might be talking about 4 screws instead of 16.
Try dropping that from 1 meter, having it land on 1 of its 4 legs. It'll probably bust itself open with its own weight.
Sounds like it's time for you to start making content! Of course it's a lot easier to sit and tell someone else the problems with their work.
The seat has direct bearing on the legs.
The one I made 10 years ago is still just as sturdy. Lots of people sit on it and it doesn't tip over. I think you might just have a simple lack of experience with working with wood in the real world. 👍
I could't lift it anyway, so no danger to drop it... And uneven loading? How do you sit on funiture, that that would be a problem?
Hey Steve Ramsey always love your video I was wondering if I was going to use screws and glue only size screws should I use and what kind of screws?
Nice job 👍
