- J League 11 Beat 1997 import game review on ninetdno 64. This is a 1997 N64 football / soccer game developed and published by Hudson Soft in Japan.
The N64 Japanese eye is the series where we take a look at Japanese exclusive n64 games, cast our eyes over them and try to answer the simple questions - can it be played, and enjoyed by someone who doesn't speak or read Japanese.

fun fact - today is a decade to the day that the first Glenn Plant N64 review (F-Zero X) was uploaded... and the format is still fresh and entertaining as ever!
Haha whoa that’s nuts, I can’t believe it’s today I will need to think about something to celebrate haha
Congratulations Glenn. Your channel is one of the best in gaming CZcams.
@@shinra2755 thank you 🙏🏼
Hi Glenn. Thank you for continuing to make videos on the N64. I hope your reviews never stop coming out. This section on exclusive games from Japan is very interesting. I'm going to try some of these games.
Thank you and I hope you find some new games that you enjoy!
I like the fun graphics of this one. I never really got into the hardcore sport titles like ISS and FIFA, so I feel like J. League 11 Beat would have been a good alternative for gamers like me that want a more casual sport gaming experience. But now this has me wondering where they could have taken a Bomberman Football/Soccer game. The idea of collecting the classic Bomberman power-ups and kicking bombs around on the field as you make your way towards the goal sounds like a blast, I would definitely be down for that lol
Yeah and in multiplayer it would have been awesome to kick bombs around or even like take out entire defence lines with a well placed line exploder!
Glenn! Thanks so much for linking my guide! But I actually wrote it last year, along with 50 other guides for Japanese games on the N64! I hope they help!
Oh whoa I thought it was dated like 2001!?!? Maybe it was because the room im editing in is like 0 degrees Celsius right now because of snow and so I can’t stay in here too long without shivering haha
@@n64glennplantThere are actually a lot of guides on GameFaqs that are 20 years old though. Lots of them were written when the N64 games were new. It's amazing they are still online. It's why I wanted to write my own and contribute to the community. Be careful you don't catch a cold mate! You mentioned you had an injury in your Gauntlet video. I hope you are alright. Best wishes from your fan in Japan. お大事に!
@Dark Japan, thanks so much for your contributions. I always see you commenting on many of Glenn's videos, particularly the Japanese Eye ones, about N64 translations you have done or are working on. Keep up the good work! :)
@@drgribb You're very welcome! It's fun to know all about the games I read about as a child in N64 Magazine! I feel bad about spamming Glenn's channel, but I want people to know that there are guides out there. I appreciate the support!
@@darkjapan No way, man! They're always nice to read. I think it's dope that people out there contributing to fan-translations are also watching these videos and are here in the comments.
I never had this on a Christmas list lol
Or an Easter list for that matter 😂
Thank you Glenn, whenever you review a Japan-only title, I start to remember the lists of upcoming releases in old magazines that every N64 owner carefully studied. I forgot about them eventually, but here they are, for some nostalgic memories of mid nineties.
About the Bomberman version of this game: as of now the most popular iteration seems to be "Bomberman Girl" and I don't really know what to think about it.
Bomberman girl - wtf is that!?!?!? 😂😂
Another great review! And yes, a Bomberman themed football/soccer game would have been a much better option. They even could have included a story mode with boss fights and everything!
Boss battles would be cool or like a giant boss goalkeeper who’s super tough to score against
Good to see more Japanese games. You'll end up covering the worldwide library in no time.
I should finish western releases this year for sure
Glad to see you cover this title. Picked up a boxed copy a while back since I adore Hudson. Also, the only sports games I care for on N64 are the ones that steered away from simulation. Other than the Blitz series, Wayne Gretzky's, etc. this one and Let's Smash/Centre Court are some stand outs on the console for me.
Great titles them!
Watching this I remembered seeing a couple of screenshots back in the day. Probably in NMS.
Cool I think I maybe saw this once or twice in magazines but never much
I missed this series!
Maybe not a bad thing!
I think they could have used the Bomberman characters without droping the J-League license, that would be perfect.
Haha that would be a crossover that NOBODY saw coming!! 💣
Nice where do you find n64 games like these
Just my autistic ass always playing n64 😅
@@n64glennplant alright that is awesome because n64 is awesome
Fantastic review Glenn! Perfectly encapsulated what makes this game fun but also what hinders it. As someone who watches the J League this game is so damn cool! Just seeing the old badges, team names and the kits makes me want to go back and research the history behind the teams again. It's feels as if I looking into a time capsule, seeing the teams today and looking into the past, comparing and contrasting is really fascinating but that's just the Historian in me.
Cool! Never been a fan of j league myself but premier league and I’m all over it!
@@n64glennplant Leeds has been struggling with a lot of injuries this season, if they had a full strength squad I could definitely see them mid table.
My guess is that the reason they didn't put Bomberman in the game, is because of the Megaman Soccer for SNES not doing well. But as someone that enjoyed "Wily & Right no RockBoard: That's Paradise", I always enjoyed seeing those wacky spin-off games.
I will have to look at that 😁
I got this one! was in a retro store near me for like $7. I bought it and snipped off the region plastic. The voices are great. Can't wait til my son can hold an n64 controller & we can play clunky moe polygon soccer together
That’s a fair price I think!
Funny enough, I must be one of the few people who actually own this game and own it boxed at that.
I bought this game in a flee market and was fun at the time for 2 player matches, but there is a way to cheese the goal keeper, if I remember correctly if you press the R & Z buttons simultaneously while holding the ball your player would drop the ball at the spot, and if you release the Z button the moment it drops it the player will pick it right up and cause the AI to stumble for a moment...Now repeat this rapidly and the player with the ball will be able to cross the field while also not being recognized as having the ball and could walk directly into the goal. (this also works with human opponents as it makes their commands switch from attacking to a loose ball).
I remember discovering your channel years 7 years ago and essentially binge watching everything in one night. It's so good to see you haven't lost your passion for the N64. Its this channel that made me go out and buy one a second time to rebuild my collection after stupidly selling my previous lot for Fallout 3.
Stay positive and best wishes my Anglo-Saxon/Celtic/Votadini King 👑
Cool to hear and glad the n64 fun is always spreading - can you believe it’s been 10 years and 1 day since my first n64 upload 😊
@@n64glennplant here’s to ten more 🍻
i used to have a lot of fun playing this game with my friends. Really easy for casual players to pick up and play than fifa or ISS.
Cool I didn’t think many would have played it before
Still working on NA N64 games.
Compared to most games I've played on 64 this looks pretty decent.
It’s worth a punt if you’re after a new experience
A Bomber man license and some arcade style super moves would have made for a very good n64 game. I'm imagining something like Nintendo World Cup (but 64).
Yeah that would have been amazing right
A football game based around the Mario IP would have been ideal back then
Didn’t have to wait too long for that concept did we
A Bomberman soccer game would've been ideal, even though I'm not into soccer, and I'm sure they would've done a much better job than Capcom did when they made... gulp... Mega Man Soccer...
Yeah, let’s never mention mega man soccer here again though please 😉 😂
@@n64glennplant sounds good to me
You shut your mouth! :P I had Mega Man Soccer as a kid and I loved it and I still love it! Just played it last week while I was visiting family over the holidays and still holds up for me.
...Never could beat Wiley's team though :/
But I agree that a Bomberman Soccer game is a solid idea and I too envisioned it working like an improved Mega Man Soccer game
@@drgribb lmao. I never played the game before, but I've seen gameplay footage of it, and wasn't impressed with what I saw, but also like I said, I'm not into soccer. If you love it, then great, I'm happy for you, the game just isn't for me...
Fun fact: Kazuyoshi Miura is the only player you could find in both this game and FIFA 21.
Very cool fact!
Quality vid as always, Glenn. I love this series of videos. This is one N64 title I never knew about.
Glad I could shed some light! Happy new year too by the way
Glenn Plant saves the day again!
Well saves a penalty maybe 😃
Always great to see you upload, Glenn. Good intro, sounds like Taka Michinoku’s entrance theme!
It is! He was also at wrestle kingdom this week and still used this theme!
2 button control? Lots of random bicycle kicks and flying headers? As an American, sounds like my kind of soccer game. I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy, but if I stumbled across a loose cart in the wind I’d buy it.
If you do it’ll likely be cheap as chips 🍟 😂
Hudson Soft released 22 games in 1997 alone, that might explain why this game may feel like a "hot mess".
Fun is Fun great review. I test random super famicom games in a similar manner. Keep the content coming glenn.
Thanks Victor!
Note that Hudson did make Bomberman Hardball for the PS2, with Baseball, Golf and Tennis modes. No idea if it was any good.
Cool I’d have to look at that
looks exactly like this android mobile game called 'Perfect Kick'
I’ll have to look that up
This has got a real 3D version of Super Soccer from the SNES vibe about it.
See even on the snes I was jammin ISS as my main football game
@@n64glennplant a man of taste even at a young age.
I finally got around to beating this game today. Its not hard but it took close to six hours because you have to win the J League to see the credits which means playing 32 matches. Suffice to say, I was totally fed up with it by the end. The J League popularity boom had ended by 1996 so the J League lisence must have been cheap. Maybe that explains all the video games. Is there any chance we will see you cover the horrific dog of a game "J League Dynamite Soccer"? I also wrote a guide for that one. That one took nearly 10 hours to beat...
Great review as always! Do you know if the game is four-player compatible?
yay a new video, n64 japanese eye 😃👏🎉
Thanks for watching 🎩
@@n64glennplant I just do what I must🤔😆
I'm not much into soccer, but I am always looking for Japanese games to pick up for this system. Looks like I will be passing on this one. It's too bad too, it actually looks really good.
As always, thanks for the review Glenn
and thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
It's a bit disappointing the graphics weren't stylized a bit more. I've always been drawn to more fantasy based sports games like the Mario sports games.
Yeah it’s a shame perhaps this was such an early n64 game as maybe a year or so later they’d have done more
Can this game be found through working on emulators, or can this game not be played on an emulator?
Should work on emulators no problem I’d imagine as there’s nothing unusual going on with the games code
Great, thanks for the verification. Could you also find some Japanese baseball titles that were also on the N64 please in your next video? That would be great if you dig up some of those as I love sports games baseball!!⚾😆
Nice video as always, but couldn´t you show the sound samples that were so bad?
I tend to avoid it in most reviews as you’d be surprised what tiny clips will get strikes from copyright claims. If you watch a long play on CZcams you’ll hear it tho
You saying Bomberman has a blank, serial-killer expression?
Yurp! 😂
Please review power league famista 64
"Japanese Eye" .... fnargh fnargh!
😉
please review aidyn chronicles the first mage
This year for sure
This video is quite odd with subtitles on
Haha really? They’re auto generated
Do you review virtual pro wrestling please
Eventually
PENARTI KIKKU!
😄
Ah, so the game is so bad it's good. A shame as the game looks good and looks like fun, but sometimes it's so bad it's good can introduce a different level of fun not seen in more polished games.
If you think it looks good then you’ll probably enjoy it, the footage is quite true to the gameplay with this one
Best game on the console I say.
I'm just kidding I have no idea what this is.
If your ideal game is a Japanese j league chibi soccer game representing the 1997 season on Nintendo 64…..then this would be your best game ha
@@n64glennplant
FINALLY a game for me!
horrible game, if you want good Japanese soccer play J-League Dynamite Soccer 64
