I lived with a dirt floor for 10 years and everything was covered with dirt and it was even in our noses. Just slightly better than outside. America isn’t wealthy for everyone. Even had an outhouse. Taking off your clothes in snow isn’t fun.

As an American, the Americans did Time Team all wrong. I don’t want dramatic punk music playing in the background with unnecessary camera cuts to build tension. This isn’t an episode of HGTV.

I got so excited when they reached the kitchen floor level that Josiah Henson walked!
The people that belittle the main character of the novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - Uncle Tom - have never read it. Tom may have been an enslaved servant, but he was a hero who endured in spite of Simon Legree's vicious beatings and attempts to get him to deny his faith. Tom was murdered when he refused to tell Legree to where Cassy and Emmeline had fled. The book was widely read in 1852 and injected the abolitionist movement with renewed vigor. It was second only to the Bible in copies sold around the world in the 19th Century.
It was the shear popularity of the book that led to the stereotyping of many of the characters, including the negative transformation of Tom and his endurance against suffering, into a slavery apologist. Copywrite laws were very lax back then so racist minstrel shows made mocking plays from the book and smeared Uncle Tom into a pathetic caricature.
Tom is based on real-life Josiah Henson, a slave who fled to Canada in 1830 taking his wife and children with him, a very rare feat. His childhood was one of suffering at the hands of slave owners. He began his plan by carrying weights in the woods so that he could become fit enough to carry his 2 youngest children on his back in their flight to freedom. In Canada, he became a highly respected land owner, farmer, mill owner, minister, writer, who helped found the British American Institute (a settlement program for other runaway slaves), and traveled to England to meet Queen Victoria. Henson personally traveled back to the south dozens of times to guide a total of 118 other slaves to freedom in Canada.
Henson himself said of the book, “From that time to the present, I have been called ‘Uncle Tom,’ and I feel proud of the title. If my humble words in any way inspired that gifted lady to write, I have not lived in vain; for I believe that her book was the beginning of the glorious end.”
So, know what you are talking about when you smear someone as an "Uncle Tom" and SHOW RESPECT to Harriet Beecher Stowe's character and to the man the character was based upon, Joshiah Henson.

The answer to why is this is so lame compared with the original TT, is because it's produced by OPB. Hence the 'Oh poor me - My experience of historical injustice is more profound than the people who actually lived it'. That sickeningly conceited attitude of entitled, self important, egotists, so common in Portland, is hard at work here. But, no actual hard work on the 'dig'-- they didn't even bother to properly remove the turf for replacement? Not very nice. Long Live Time Team UK!

i think you are talking without looking at history. check out the mound builders and try reading barry fell's three books, Saga America, etc. also gloria farley. also '1421' tells the story of a late voyage of the chinese down the west coast of america, or if you want 1000 years, go to the earlier voyages documented by a number of people such as Hendon Harris, 'the asiatic fathers of america'. i learned much about the background of my hairless dogs, who got the genes of the chinese wool dogs that all western tribes have, and which crossed with the hairless in peru. most likely on the about 499 ad trip by 5 Buddhist monks, or the earlier voyage 2000 or so BC. the last two trips are documented by Henriette Meyer, original title 'pale ink' she describes a journey from China that landed at Port Huaneme near Santa Barbara, California, and the route taken across California (perhaps after going down the coast to peru and doubling back) along about the present border between the USA and Mexico, where in my lifetime i found several gene lines of hairless dog considered indigenous for as long as anyone knows. some people in Arizona go horseback riding in the deserrt near tucson or Dragoon, and have a large hairless dog come out of the desert and follow them home.
also 26 miles across the sea, santa catalina is waiting for me, where thousands of miniature mastodon bones were eaten by the natives a lot longer than 1000 years ago.
