Elvis Presley - A Thing Called Love - From First take to the Master

  • This song was released on Elvis’ 1971 Grammy winning album “He Touched Me” despite not being a gospel song in the strictest sense, the only such song on the entire album. It’s inclusion among several subsequent Elvis gospel compilation and box sets only adds to it’s perception as a bona fide gospel song. Instead, the message of the song is how love has manifested itself within mankind throughout the years.
It was written and originally recorded by Jerry Reed in 1968, around the same time that Reed was recording Guitar Man with Elvis. However, Elvis’ version of the song was recorded at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville on 19 May 1971. It was the third of six songs recorded that evening and the master was achieved in nine takes. It then underwent the usual orchestral overdubs on 21 June before it’s release on the album in April 1972.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!

That was unbelievably good. Don't believe I've ever heard a song with more harmony along with Elvis. His vocals have always been prominent. Keep em coming.

    Hi Leon,
Some parts of this song I feel like I'd never heard before. Then on other versions I remembered it. Strange.
    Thank you Leon xxx 💝

This is one of those tracks where Elvis does not take front and centre stage, it's almost like a collaboration with the back up singers, each as effective in their own deliverance as they are together with Elvis.
Although not strictly a gospel song, it's lyrics are quite profound and very fundamental for the existence of life.
Ps if I was to be not picking I'd say, that some of the word endings appear to to somewhat clipped, giving it a rather rushed approach. But hey I'm no conossieur on the subject, so feel free to shout me down .haha
Leon as always, great upload , thanks

It is actually a pure country song about love written and sang by Jerry Reed, writer of „Guitar Man“ and „U.S.Male“!

Something that I have noticed in the past at the album version (aka take 9) is a chair sound at the very beginning of the song, and Elvis singing 'World' instead of 'Wind' at the first chorus, not that these things make any difference but just something I noticed (and probably most noticed too)

Who was the bass singer! I know this was the JD era but it’s not JD. I thought it was R Sterban.

      Hi Jeff.
The bass singer is Armond Morales of The Imperials.

Really…! I thought it sounded a lot like Richard Sturban. Especially since he began the 72 tours with Elvis. But I was sure!
      Thank you!

Always wondered why this was on the album as I never really regarded it as a gospel song but more country/pop - great song nevertheless 💕
