My old friend Bob had a shop, while chewing on his cigar he’d eye the paint he needed to match. He knew roughly it needs a drop or two of this and maybe a drop of that to get it to match. After the stir stick dried maybe some more adjustments and some were tricky but he always got it.
I remember the old guys like that. Just pure, from the gut talent!
Reminds me of the older ladies who were great cooks, a pinch of this and a dash of that.
Yes that would be like my body SHOP expert Glen Koch in Amarillo. Basically he could match any paint and a real good body man.
Love seeing your hood being redone. Mine has scratches and scraps too. And every imperfection is a badge of honor
I'm like that with most of my stuff. But this car is on TV, so it just had to get fixed. It was pretty bad.

My dad knew a body man. He did mostly commercial. Saw him mix metallic brown on a 70 225 fender. Perfect. I remember him saying the age of the paint matters, cause the sun fades it.
Yep! The old guys were real artists! The worst paint was single stage metallic silver.
We have driveway tigers and over the years I’ve seen some of their handy work. That’s awesome that they matched the paint. In my neck of the woods the paint shops are awful especially on classic cars.
Most of the ones around here are the same

Good video! Good to see you got your paint repair matched up!! You never mentioned how much it hurt your wallet! My parents had cat's growing up. Have a few pictures of his 1931 Coupe that I own now with the cats sleeping on the seat deck shelf below the rear window. That might explain why there were no mouse nest's in the car when I got it!!

Hi Friends! So glad you got the hood fixed! Don't be too hard on the shop tigers, they are just being what they are. If they knew how bad what they were doing was, they wouldn't do it! We had a cat on the farm that had been declawed on the front paws, but still was good at catching mice, etc! Of course we had plenty of cat chow for her when the prey were scarce! Your Uncle Paul and my dad sound similar. I missed curfew one night, by a lot. Dad woke me up at 6 AM Saturday morning to help him work on my mom’s car, then mow the lawn. All before I had a 9 hour shift at my part-time job. I don’t recall missing curfew after that.

Paul, I encourage you to do the body and paint restoration on your 31 pick up. Would be a wonderful series. Whatever knowledge you have on that profession can be used and added to if necessary. One thing for certain, it sure beats saying [ I had a guy do it]
I have tried doing paint many times. I totally suck at it. But since my cousin is so good at it, total no-brainer! It's a good excuse to hang out with him some more also
@@ModelA Yeah, I appreciate how you feel. I've been painting Model's over a half century and some of my customers think I really suck at it too. On the other hand there is a black Model A in the Nethercutt collection I painted back in 79 that helps. I just try to be a learner if possible and have fun. Sounds like you have a pretty good teacher.

You have assisted me in my restoration project of my 1931 Phaeton… Thank you… Recently, I was told by a wise older Model A owner that I needed a new front spring… I finally found one and now its time to replace my existing spring… I have viewed all your videos two or three times, but I don’t believe you ever discussed replacement a front leaf spring… I have searched CZcams, but the only one discussing do it, do not go through the steps in order, in order to provide a clear understanding.. maybe you’ll ass this to a segment…
The Les Andrews red book kinda talks about it. First thing- You NEED a front spring spreader. Mandatory!

I completely agree with you Paul! I grew up with my father teaching me mechanics with Craftman tools from Sears, back in the years 50’s. Snap on tools, SK TOOLS, Mac tools.
On the plantation in Curaçao my grandfather my father’s side Jacobs, he has granted during the WWII, the Americans to set up an American base on the families property till the end of war.
The Americans were here in Curaçao and Aruba as both island had refineries to supply the allies with fuel.
So, you may understand how I grew up totally Americanized and proud of what Betty Jacobs has agreed to.
I got my green card in 1987, but returned back to Curaçao as I live here as a king and an island life is not transferable, unless you live in Cuba or Venezuelan.
God bless America for now and future!!!!! And the Americans as they have Washington in their hands!

Now Paul, great job on the paint match. My next interest is, how close the the original paint finish does the hood match? Also, how to prevent the shop tiger from doing this mishap again. cover the hood with a towel? Why is there not a bird radiator cap sitting on the radiator. It didn't have one available when new?
It's soooo close, can't even tell. The "flying quail" radiator caps were an aftermarket accessory. They left the factory with a plain cap like the one on it now

Years ago I had a car port where I parked the vehicles. Mostly protective from the elements. But not the critters...
For whatever reason, one evening some @#$&!? critters got in and did heinous damage to my bike! It was my two wheeled pride & joy!

My stepdad has the same issue with his A. It needs some TLC on it, some a bit more expansive. Too bad they're not closer.
You can have the original formula for a paint color, but the original ingredients are no longer available.

My 30 Phaeton was restored in 1968, and the paint work on the body is very faded. It is a mid green, not sure of the right name. Do you have a recommendation of what to use to buff it up to get some of the shine back in it? Cheers, from New Zealand
If there is some thickness to it left, maybe try some compound? Best bet- Call my cousin Dave (phone number is in the description). Just add a 1 at the beginning for the country code. Ask him. Dave will hook you up.

That tower is only holding up the far end of an end fed half wave wire. We call that tower "Tod". Dubbed that by a friend who climbed it and its razor sharp horizontal parts. "Tower of death".

That is funny, I have what we call, a borrowed brother, whom is a Dave also! We've known each other for 52 years and he looks out after me, especially now that I was diagnosed autistic at 57, that will be 2 years ago this coming Sept.
I was the best man in his wedding back in 1994, and am good friends with his wife and their son, now in college. They both work in education, but two different schools, she in a middle school in the school district where we both grew up, he at a state 2 year college that I'm hoping to get back on there in a job. He's worked in education at several places, the last at a private academy but had to change jobs due to the headmaster being a narcissist and driving employees away.
Anyway, Our families have intertwined as well over the years, sadly, only his father remains of both sets of parents and is in his early 90's.
His brothers intertwined with my 3 older sisters age wise, then me, then David, the youngest by 3 years. His brother Mike is the oldest of all of us. 4 children in each family. His all boys, my family 3 sisters and me (only male).

@@ModelA Yes, was diagnosed ASD, level 1 so "high functioning" and back in the 60's through the early to mid 90's, most folks only knew about the severe autistics, and only white boys and no clue that autism can carry on into adulthood.
I also have CRS (congenital rubella syndrome) so those issues may have clouded the fact that I am autistic. Not uncommon for many folks born then to not get diagnosed until much later as adults. We suspected about 18 years ago, but the timing of getting it done wasn't until Sept of 22.

About 6 and a half minutes into this video czcams.com/video/alhHVxYmNL8/video.html you can see where the serial number is on the frame. That's about the only way to tell.
