In Britain, fairies filled the landscape. They haunted rivers and seas; the air; and the earth beneath your feet. Almost anything strange in nature belonged either to fairies or the devil. People saw them, heard them, and even smelled them. In Wales they appeared at local markets and forced up prices. Sightings of fairies in the British countryside have been recounted by the most unlikely witnesses, well into the era of living memory. In Ireland especially, fairy paths, trees and forts were treated with intense reverence. If you accidentally built your house across a fairy path, you might slice a corner off the building, or abandon it altogether. And it was in Ireland that folklore met the strangest fringes of real terror. For the many disturbances credited to angry fairies were, in fact, the work of real poltergeists.
Richard Sugg is the author of eleven books, including Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires (2015), A Singing Mouse at Buckingham Palace (2017), Fairies: A Dangerous History (2017), and The Real Vampires (2019). His newest book, Our Week with the Juffle Hunters, is a children’s story inspired by fairy folklore. He is currently writing Talking Dirty: The History of Disgust. He lives in Cardiff.

Unfortunately, my Irish grandmother passed on in 1951, many years before I was born. So, I never got the chance to meet her. However, I've been told many stories about her. She was old-old-old skool and extremely superstitious. This included a deep belief in the magical folk. Apparently, if she heard cats screeching at night, she would swear it was the banshees and check every window in the house to ensure they were closed. Banshees were best avoided and could be dangerous.
She swore she had seen fairies her entire life, ever since she was a young girl. She had a deep fear of them, yet revered them at the same time, and was adamant that you needed to believe in the magical folk in order to see them. According to her, some were good and some were bad. The bad fell into two categories. Some were bad, but not dangerous. Those tended to be mischievous. They would be blamed for missing items in your home, or milk and food going off quicker than normal. In fact, all sorts of life's mishaps could be blamed on them.
But, there were a few that were best avoided. Those types were unpredictable and potentially dangerous. Banshees, amongst others, fell under that category, with each type posing a unique threat. Her line was, it was best to stay in the good graces of all the magical folk and leave them be. She would leave food out for them in the garden every day. When the food was gone, she would comment that the folk had been to take the food. My aunt, who didn't believe in fairies saw birds eating the food one day and pointed this out to my gran. "THERE are you fairies mammy," she told her with defiance. My gran didn't bat an eye and instantly retorted, "Don't be a fool, those are birds. Did you not think birds would eat the food as well as the folk? I put the food out for the folk knowing the birds have their share."
As she got older, she said she saw them less and less. She blamed the modern world for this and claimed their habitats were disappearing. She despaired that, "Magical folk never return to their lands once it's been soured and tainted by the works of men." Also, she swore that electricity, in particular, was harmful to the folk. This included the lightbulb. They turn night into day when the night is meant to be dark. It was unnatural to have artificial light at night and candles were the only form of lighting you should have. Candles create illumination using a flame. As well, they're made of wax. Fire and wax were natural and a part of nature. Artificial electric lighting not only scared the folk away, but it also had an effect on us. She swore that it had an effect on our vision and made it harder to see the folk. If street lights shine near their homes, they move away, never to return.
She also had countless superstitious beliefs, apart from believing in the magic folk. You couldn't say certain things or there were colours you never use for a variety of things. I suppose it's easy to see why she was this way. She was born in 1889 and grew up in a remote, rural area of Ireland. Her childhood home had no electricity, inside toilet, or running water. They relied on a well for water. No wonder why she hated modernity.

@@johnharrison2466 A few years ago, I received a private message from a complete stranger in a forum I had joined a few months prior. The message informed me they always avoid a wall of words in every forum they visit. However, when they see it's a post of mine, they take the time to read it. As a writer, it was the highest compliment anyone could give me. When I say how much your comment means to me, you should now comprehend the full extent of my appreciation.
When we make a point or tell a story using our words, there are infinite ways we can do this. In my head, I see it like apple pie. Similar to making a point, there are countless different recipes for apple pie. If you baked 20 apple pies, all with a unique recipe and sample each pie, one will taste better than the rest. So, when I write, I want to bake the best tasting pie. 😀
My grandmother's story is interesting, to say the least, and it stands up on its own. She comes from a world that remained unchanged for thousands of years, in terms of technology. Thankfully, her grandson has the ability to relate her tale and give a sense of her mindset, despite the fact I never had the privilege of meeting her.
One of my aunts, in particular, is the source of what I've shared here. Over the years, she has painted a colourful description of my grandmother, leaving me with a strong sense of her living soul.

In Mexico, there are many cases of people seeing ”duendes” which is what we call fae in Latin America and Spain. My brother has told me he has seen them several times, he once told me about a story of him sitting beneath an orange tree when he felt pebbles hitting him on the head. When he pulled the branch of the tree down he said there was a little man standing on the branch, before he took off running. Lol I even asked him as adults if he was lying to me and he still swears it happened.

Sometimes if you practice being quiet, and go for walks in parks, woods, even cemetaries( because many modern people don't bother visiting their dead loved ones' resting place) you might see a person or animal that appears a bit "off". You may "run"into a person,or people odd that may look at you strangely, and may or not ask you strange or even commonplace questions.Always be polite, don't bargain with them or make promises, don't say you are "sorry" ever, rather say "pardon me " if you bump into them, don't ever laugh at them if they are dressed " different". Just be open, and do not eat food offered if Insisted upon! You may leave bread or cake with honey or pretty stones from elsewhere as a gift..Just a suggestion, and they can "look modern" like anybody else- there will be something a bit "off"! Always go in peace and harmony with nature and respect, you'll be fine.

Your story caught my eye because, you intimated that he was not thrilled to help you. That had a ring of truth to it. Hes never been to the west of Ireland where people actually live by the old folk rules to this day,eg. The government were building a motorway near Limerick and Clare in Ireland during the Celtic tiger, they came across a lone white thorn Bush and the irish fellas working stopped and refused to dig it up,the only way round was to move the motorway, the authorities told the non nationals to root it up and continue but they were so scared by the reaction of the irish workers they refused and.....the motorway was moved to go around the white thorn Bush, you see the other folk own them, its a rule,if you mess with that you and your family for entire generations are in big trouble. I never heard this thing of fallen Angel's,that's not a thing here in Ireland, if you want a proper folk story teller search Eddie Lenihan,he has travelled Ireland collecting different stories from different areas from people like my family who live this

Interesting. Really interesting, because directly after you commented, someone called T A commented, with a similar, but different story. That you should both be stimulated to respond, is a delight. My question for you, regarding the music your daughter heard is this.... Does she now play an instrument ? I come from an unusual family, we have many odd experiences. One of those experiences was had by my cousin Elaine, when she was a child in Wakefield Mass. She and 2 of her neighbor friends were out front on the swings, when the littlest of them began running up the street. That child was 2, I believe. The bigger girls chased her, because she was only 2, and they needed to watch after her. They came to a UFO, on a Sunday, in the middle of the day! This opened up and let them in. This was not out in the country, this was a town. They were taken to separate rooms, and experienced different things. Elaine was shown endless amounts of art. Her friend Stephanie listened to music. The baby was to little to share what she may have experienced. In the mean time the 3 kids were found to be missing, the police were called, and it was a regular hub-bub. When the 3 reappeared walking down the self same street, they were in trouble. My cousin I believe told me it was the only spanking she ever received. Elaine further went on to tell me that Stephanie went on to become a musician. Elaine herself is an artist living in northern California. She paints very realistic flowers, among other things. I asked about the 2 year old, who started the entire thing. Elaine told me that she died young. So that is in answer to your shared story, and it is why I am asking the question. Does your daughter play an instrument? Looking forward to anything further you may have to add.

@@TA-ib3dv Wow, I`m not quite sure how to explain myself, as to exactly what I mean, without sounding very abstract, which I am. I arrive at my thoughts in a non-concrete way, so bare with me. Or just chuck what I say, if it doesn`t find a comfy spot in you. I personally believe that humans are being changed. Not all at once, and not all of us, in the same ways. I guess you could say I believed that we are being tweaked. Some changes have already been made in the range of human vision as enable mortals to recognize the heretofore invisible cousins which date back to the time of Adam. I have believed this for some time, but being here on this channel, I keep running into others who have had the experiences of seeing the hidden people, the little people, or which ever name you choose to give them. These beings have been charged with care taking this planet, since their inception. Perhaps, we did not have a need to interact with them much, until recently. However any person who cares for this planet, can see that the time has arrived, when we dearly need to partner with an intelligence which has an investment in the future of living water, breathable air etc. We on this planet, are in fact not the only ones who are concerned with the outcome of earth. We are simply the only ones jeopardizing the outcome. If you wish to better understand the hidden people and what purpose they serve, I suggest you attempt to purchase an old book from Amazon. It is authored by Penny Kelly, and is entitled The Elves of Lily Hill Farm. Penny, a nice wealthy yuppie lady in the San Francisco area, found herself interacting with them, and decided to write a book, which clarified for me, who exactly they might be in the scheme of this planet. That they have been invisible for so long, is nothing to be fearful of. The time has come when we need their guidance, so some of us are born with, or have our sight altered to be able to see them...... Your story brought to mind, that our sight is also being altered for other reasons. Good reasons, for the arts. The arts actually do something to humanity, to lift us above the lowly depths, humanity has been known to sink to now and then. We really do not truly understand what exactly music does to the human spirit, but we all know it does something, don`t we. We are absolutely not alone here on this little blue ball, even though it often feels as if we are. We are receiving help. Many times it happens in ways that we do not even recognize. Many people are ready to proclaim the end or defeat, or whatever. There is no arguing with this view. But as individuals have ultra personal revelation, they change their outlook. If you can picture a child with a cigarette lighter. You need to get the dangerous thing away from the child. No one wants to hear the child scream. So you offer the child a bright red ball. The child drops the dangerous item, and takes the much more attractive red ball. Did that make sense to you? Mankind cannot be forced. Mankind must be coaxed along. The giving of gifts, to individuals of the human race, which enhance life, and lead us to exist in a higher vibration, is a good thing. These are things which are not traded, but given freely by higher powers, for the betterment of those who dwell on planet earth. Using lights to make changes in the brain, is actually happening in therapy, for patients who have had severe concussions, right now in the US. Other beings have long since perfected these therapies. I suggest to you, that you and your sister were chosen, specifically because of your DNA, to be artistically creative, just as my cousin Elaine was chosen, when she was a child. If this offends you, I sincerely apologize for stepping on your belief system.

I have a few stories about things that I can only describe as belonging to the Fairy Realm. I was walking through the woods just past a small village called Wilton in the Tees Valley in England, and I saw a gleaming women in a white robe, washing her hair in the small stream. She actually glowed with a brilliant white light. That was around 1998/1999, recently I saw what looked like a cinder floating around the plants in the garden, moving like there was some intelligence behind it, it vanished after a few moments, guess it noticed me watching it. My Grandad used to often tell me a story about small black armoured creatures he saw one night, dancing in a circle in someone's front garden.

It's fascinating that the same themes appear time and time again all over the world. Yes, there are some logical explanations for some things, but not for everything. I listened to people's stories about encounters with spirit and other worldly beings in the Amazon Basin many years ago and elements are very similar. The Scottish Kelpies and the water spirits reported to me by conservative American missionaries, university professors and native peoples in the Amazon were very much alike. Certainly not what I expected, I assure you.

As someone who grew up hearing these tales from my grandfather, who too had heard them from his grandparents and so on, always thought the stories were fun. Only recently have I started to seriously consider their validity to some sort of overarching theme.

My dog used to play with a fox that would come the fence at the back of our garden and shout for her. There was just woodland and then moors after that so it was safe to let her go out on her own. This went on for years and they were apparently great friends, perhaps even a couple. LOL
One late spring/early summer I found the fox dead in the woods not far from the back of our house. It was Jess's friend as the markings were correct. Given who he was I buried the fox out of respect. It was about 3 months later towards the end of the summer when I heard the fox calling for my dog again, I absolutely prickled with goose bumps when I heard it! My dog sprang up and ran for the kitchen door as usual and nearly ripped a bloody hole in lawn running for the woods! I was not far behind her as I wanted to see what was going on too. There was absolutely nothing there, Jess jumped over the fence and had a bit of an investigation but seemed to come up blank. I never heard the fox calling again but it seems my dog did and definitely had a few visits from her old friend until she died in 2011. I like to think they both found each other again and still play in those woods... :-)

I felt like I assume fairies wanted to play hide and seek. After a few times of them popping in front and back of me. I got mad. They wouldn't show themselves. I could tell there were at least five or so of them. After I started walking away. I couldn't hear them anymore. Never happened again.

The faeries are in every culture past, present, and future on earth. Cultures that had no concept of "fallen angels" have them as very similarly reported.
They should be differentiated from Elementals (spirits of air/sylphs, water/undines, fire/salamanders, earth/brownies) and as having individual personification and cognitive abilities...i.e. Elves, Gnomes, Jinn, etc. Indicating a parallel evolution and social structure similar to humans, and are not subject to magical operations such as spells or incantations which rely on the Elementals for potency and completion.

my takeaway from this talk (super interesting), is that these mythological creatures are essentially different sightings of all the same entity (or technology), they exist on the fringes of our imagination, they have been around longer than modern humans, and I don't doubt that the experience is very much real. Oh bless you for your endearing message. I have written poetry but not regularly. I was badly savaged by a thief and during my recovery period as I was getting over the shock a lot of poetic thoughts came to mind as I was writing to various friends and also in my time when I was able to free up my mind.
I’m a creative artist who was born into a creative family, but having said that I also find that I have encountered some “paranormal” experiences, as I have related. And the most recent one was from a reoccurring dream that I would have which was a very happy and stunningly beautiful dream of visiting an alpine valley which had little springs bubbling up in a meadow. And was to me an experience which I felt like going on a holiday and I would wake feeling very refreshed. Now the last time I had it I found myself flying over the landscape looking down on the trees that would spiral into beautiful shapes and was back into the meadow where crystals were being farmed around the entrances of these bubbling springs. There was a lovely humpback bridge made from the local rock and more so I found I was flying above a red sandstone building which was a place of learning.
-And at this point late last year I was looking for something in google and came across a photograph of the exact same place which was built in red sandstone. Now at this point I have to tell you that I don’t subscribe to any religion , but the building was a place in Northern Spain known as the Basilica of Corvadonga. You can look it up to see what I was both dreaming about and found, and only a couple of weeks ago I decided to do a bit more research on the place and came across the humpback bridge which pulled the whole experience into focus and I have decided to visit it next year hopefully.
I hope that this story is brought some light into your life and know that you are apart from my closest friends are the very first person who I have related this tale which is most definitely real.

Faeries are not descendants of fallen angels. Faeries pre-date Christianity and the Bible, and the idea of angels being cast out of heaven is specifically a Christain/biblical Belief that came well after the original stories, lore, and sightings of Fae. This is a very typical idealogy that the Christian Faith has put on a lot of Pagan ideas and mythos, by deeming anything that is different or does not fit along the lines of their Church teaching and bible to being something 'cast out' or demonic in Nature, which is simply not true. Fae are their own species of being. They are spawned from Nature and Nature's Elements.
