    Dr Alixe Bovey - Albion’s Giants: Gogmagog, Brutus and the Conquest of Britain
    Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain, completed in the 1130s, opens c. 1200 BC with the tale of the conquest of Britain by a band of Trojan refugees. Led by Brutus, the great-grandson of Aeneas, the Trojans made their way to an uninhabited island known as Albion, but on arrival they discovered that it’s overrun by ferocious giants. Renaming the island Britain after Brutus, they exterminated the giants, and then founded London as the new Troy. Although Geoffrey’s story kills off the giants in just a few lines, they have persisted in the myth and material culture of Britain. This talk explores the remarkable variety of giants in the visual arts - in manuscripts and books, carved into landscapes and as pageant figures - asking how and why they have survived so long and what they reveal about the monstrous origins of the British nation.
    Dr Alixe Bovey is a specialist in medieval art history based at the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she is Head of Research.

    There are two intakings of Troy 1st was the Mycaeneans C 1230 BC Troy V1 with its beautiful walls and C 1177 BC the City of Tenements Troy V11 badly damaged by the Sea Peoples and whose inhabitants appear to have joined with the Sea Peoples in their Invasion of the Levant and to defeat in Egypt.Then there is the huge structure found in Bush Lane, City of London walls 15ft thick going down into the earth the Excavator Prof W Grimes in 1961 was puzzled as lying on top to a depth of 3ft a mass of burnt debris which he tentatively assigned to Boudica's Burning of Londinium in AD61but to strictures placed on him he was not able to investigate further.

      Yes the final destruction of Troy by the Sea Peoples took place in 1177 BC and there is a huge Knowledge Gap between then and 650BC where Writing and Learning becomes more common,Solomon was in the 10th C but proof is sparse but then would be near enough though earlier would fit in better and where did the County of Surrey originate?

      It wasn't called Britain or London either, in fact all the names were different. However, by using modern names helps modern people to locate these places.

    Couldn't Albion derive from Albania?

    • @dafyddaprhys4166
      @dafyddaprhys4166 Před 2 dny

      Albion derives from Albine an Assyrian princess who arrived at the now British isles in around 1500b
      Surrey derives from Assyria too apparently the region first populated by said Assyrians.
