Whoop just didn't tick enough boxes to justify the subscription - and I can't see 4.0 solving that. Garmin still reigns supreme 😁

I stick to the Garmin system with an Edge 820 for the bike r/t and a Forerunner for all other activities (apart from turbo/Zwift). I don’t use a chest strap as I have found that they don’t work for me. When I was using them I was getting an Average HR for a run at about 220! I’m neither that good nor that unfit. I was worried with that but a friend of mine who is a doctor mentioned that a few peoples’s hearts through out additional electrical pulses when they start to work hard which confuse chest strap HRMs as they count them as beats. Apparently it’s nothing to worry about it’s just one of those things. I had it checked out by my own doctor who wired me up to an ECG whilst I exercise and confirmed that the chest strap HRM was over reading at high workloads. So I now use a Polar OH1 optical sensor on my arm paired to either of my Garmins or Zwift for activities. This gives readings I would expect.
The only non-Garmin measurement I use is the free HRV4TRAINING app which I use first this each morning to track my HRV. This just gives me another metric to keep me on track - having been guilty of over training last year.

Whoop for intense training is basically useless. Anything like heavy weights or even sprints on the bike, whoop feels a brisk 60 min walk is more demanding on recovery. Shows it’s fundamentally flawed.

@@mdbourneI’ve used Whoop for 4 years now, and I’m a track cyclist (sprinter). Statistically once you have 100 data points (so 100 days of Whoop or whatever brand you prefer) then you start to have a solid baseline. After that, all devices - including Whoop - become more data-interesting. It absolutely does auto capture sprinting on track, same with strength training in the gym. Personally I stumbled across Whoop a few years ago and have mainly used the sleep tracking - that’s my choice however! Happy training!

Ditching something before a data baseline has even been established seems ridiculous but to each his own.

Mark, just wanted to tell you that your channel has quickly become a favorite of mine. I love your no-nonsense, objective approach, your attitude, and your presentation. You always present good information and in a way that's interesting to listen to as well as informative. Always get stoked to see a new vid from you, and amongst all the trash I've managed to subscribe myself to over time, your channel has become the diamond in the rough that I inevitably click on first. I honestly can't believe your channel doesn't have more subscribers at this point, but damnit people better wake TF up.

Been waiting for your results with the Whoop as I’ve been using both for a fair amount of time now.
Agree with all your comments on reliability of HR data during the day and when training, I’ve had to get some massive spikes changed by Whoop as it resulted in a muncher higher Max HR then I am ever capable of. This then altered the rest of my data. One thing you won’t have seen though is the study of your journal and how the different factors affect your sleep and recovery. I’ve found that very good and interesting to see how a late meal or reading before bed can alter your sleep and recovery quality.
Im gonna stick with it for the 4.0 then make my mind up, like you I think the Garmin is almost there but it would be good to swap watches now and then.
As always a great review and wish you all the best for the 💯 today.

HR variability, updates if you nap or do some controlled breathing exercises during the day, and it’s free! I’m sure it could be more accurate, but I take it as a guideline anyway. Does the data from the vivo smart transfer over to Garman connect, and when you swap it out for the Garmin Fenix 6X, does the 6X continue with the data for your body battery, or do you need to wear both devices through the day. As it would be an ideal situation where you could use the vivo smart for sleep and then the Fenix throughout the day and for any physical activity. Hope this makes sense.

Compared to the Fenix 6X which is a $700 watch that if it gets scratched you gotta stare it for the rest of the time you have it. And when they come out with the Fenix 7, you gotta drop the coin to get the latest and greatest.

Great video- allegedly whoop are working to address the lack of weightlifting driven strain and have acquired “PUSH” a similar startup whose own wearables and importantly algos focused more on strength training than cardio.

They can't sell me the subscription for a wearable
If I buy a gadget I hope I can use it no matter what
It should, in my opinion, be a "freemium" service at least, with a few basic functions for the price of the wearable, and more advanced features with a subscription
The bracelet would cost a bit more for sure, but at least I believe more people would be prone to try it, a bit like strava, imagine if it was only a premium paid subscription app...

The Whoop 3.0 hardware is utter garbage particularly in a high sweat environment (i.e. zwift). Just climbed off the trainer after a 100km cat B race and it classified it as active recovery. I dual record with a wahoo tickr. Strava says I bunt 1944 cals. Whoop said 950 đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™‚ïž Got my fingers crossed that the 4.0 is better but chances are I won't be renewing my subscription. I do prefer the app over the Garmin stuff though.

I find anything that monitors your sleep utterly pointless unless you're an elite/competitive athlete. I don't need a watch to tell me how tired I am. Furthermore, what am I supposed to do with that information? I'm never going to feel okay but see that my watch has told me I've not slept brilliantly so call off a gym session or a run.
