  • Nicholas Boyle explains LPR/silent reflux symptoms. You can find more information at refluxuk.com/symptoms-and-dia...
Everyone recognises reflux can cause symptoms in the oesophagus including heartburn, chest pain and regurgitation, but many people don’t realise it can also cause throat and respiratory symptoms.
Research suggest LPR is just as common as indigestion and heartburn symptoms, perhaps affecting over 20% of the adult population.
    Asthma
    Ear ache
    Sore throat
    Voice changes
    Throat clearing
    Post-nasal drip
    Persistent cough
    Shortness of breath
    Bad taste in the mouth
    Recurrent chest infections
Globus (feeling a lump in the throat)

Anyone experience shortness of breath from silent reflux? I have to sigh all the time like once ever 3-4 mins to catch my breathe. I have this all day everyday

same, I have to yawn in order to force a breath all the way in and I am forcing yawns 100+ times per day. I had an endoscopy and they didn’t think I had any signs of reflux so I don’t know why I can’t breath. It feels like a golf ball stuck down in my breathing tube that won’t let air pass, or someone pushing on my throat. Miserable

I was diagnosed with GERD in 2015, was told to use pantoprazol (zomac) till it got better, I used the medication for about 3 years and was fine, suddenly one night I woke up with coughing and mucus in my throat, and it happened again, and again and again.
I tried to drink some milk, but it only made it worse.
I could actually feel my stomach acid going into my breathing tube, which then activated asthma attacks, and it was going around every night.
Shortness of breath, mucus in throat, hoarseness, back pain, coughing, lump in throat, asthma problems, dry mouth etc.
We are going through it together people ❤

Stress and anxiety definitely is part of it. When I got covid my main symptom after having fever and chills the first two days my throat became terribly sore. It went on for like a week and a half. After that my stress levels went up and not having a job made it worse also. What I didn’t realize until later was it was causing acid to run up while I was asleep which inflamed my throat and tongue tonsils and taste buds. The esophagus sphincter from stress im thinking created to not work properly. So now when I eat, I can’t feel the acid coming up but definitely feel it in my throat and I can taste it. I’m battling against it meanwhile back of tongue and throat is inflamed a lot and it’s horrible. Can’t enjoy and always thinking about it. What so did notice after I changed my diet to more alkaline foods was it made a difference. Also, taking probiotics and eating in moderation and slowing it down works. At night I’ll take a gaviscon to keep acids down. Now I’m trying to figure out how to fix sphincter naturally. I also believe in prayer! Good luck everyone with it

This is pretty much the exact same thing that happened to me. Last year I got Covid and was stressed out about it while sick. In addition I had ALOT of other stresses in my life on top of having Covid. So on top of having Covid I got reflux symptoms and woke up a couple nights with acid literally in my throat. It took me 10-14 days to get over Covid but by the end of it I had the cough from reflux thinking it was lingering from having Covid. I was left with physical symptoms from stress the main one being reflux. Still hasn’t gone away after a year because I’m in a mental feedback loop where I’m stressed because of reflux and the reflux stresses me out. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Getting better though

I have suffered with my LPR since returning to the UK about 5 years ago. It flares up during winter and a VERY hot summer. I have a feeling that I suffer with a dry throat, particularly after a cold. I believe there are various factors at play though, especially when it flares up. Biggest triggers are eating less than 2 hours before bed time (worse when consuming alcohol) Too much coffee, stress (and a combination of these factors). When I have flare ups I find it important to hydrate, eat slowly and chew food, eat smaller portions..I find that using dry throat spray after eating and swallowing a little bicarbonate of soda before bed time really helps. Also, try and prevent your environment from becoming dry.

11 yrs ago I was diagnosed by a specialist with LPR when I lost my sweet taste buds (constant sour taste) and feeling like I had slight lump in my throat. Also, I was chocking on crumbly types of food like crackers & coconut. I didn't have the heartburn back then, but these past 2 years, I'm also getting heartburn now & then depending on what I eat & how much stress I'm going through. A couple antacids helps with that, especially before bedtime. And yep, depending on the atmosphere, I get the nasal drip. But I still refuse to give up on spicy foods! :P

I strongly recommend that you get an endoscopy done to look at your esophagus and stomach. If you have had this condition for a long period of time you can develop Barrett’s Esophagus which is a pre-cancerous condition that can be serious. For now though, never ever sleep on your right side as it puts your stomach above your esophagus allowing stomach acid to travel up your esophagus and cause your laryngeal spasms making it difficult to breathe. Very scary I know. There is a special wedge pillow called a Medcline that may help you sleep made specifically for GERD which is what you very likely have. GERD can be massively worse if you have anxiety. Hope this helps.

    • @kennethc.fishiii54
      @kennethc.fishiii54 Před 3 lety +1

Ricardo Cruz Music No. But you need that Endoscopy bro. GERD is in your esophagus not your stomach. Antacids only help with your throat burning and do nothing for stomach acid You must avoid acidic food and drinks at all costs. No caffeine no tomato products at all, no alcohol, no smoking, no sports drinks, no spicy food. My feeling of the lump went away. This will take a long time to go away. Years for some. You have to do this bro. Get checked out and get a treatment plan.

My two major symptoms are hoarseness and the sensation of swelling in the throat (maybe the same sense of "lump" as others put it). I did have acid reflux before. It was so acidic it literally woke me up from sleep! I have since taken pantoprazole for 16 months now and no improvements at all! I do not smoke, never drink, have quit coffee, spicy food, tomatoes, etc, have raised the front legs of my bed by 3 inches plus s pillows. No improvements. Did endoscopy and it was completely normal. Did esophageal manometry and 24 hour pH probe and am waiting for the results. Have seen two family doctors, one ENT doctor and one voice specialist, not very helpful. Can't trust any doctors and have to do my own independent research online.

I used to have bad acid reflux, coughing, sleeping on wedge pillow. lump in throat, holes in my chest. I fixed it. The way to fix it, is to fix your digestion. Bone broth is the first thing you drink and drink lots of it. Second eat lots of fatty meats, third remember to eat protein meats. Yes the carnovore diet. Cut out vegeables for the first 3 to 6 months until digestion is healed and re introduce vegeables back into your diet. Keto and paleo would help to. The first step will be carnovore. Within 3 weeks I felt better and healed in 6 months. 2 years later I never felt better. In all honestly I cheat and when I do that, the reflux comes back again, so I need to drink bone broth again

I have to keep swallowing, like my saliva doesn't go down windpipe. The saliva is in my throat, but doesn't go down. I've tried drinking more water, but it doesn't help. I’ve been having these symptoms for like two weeks:
    - constant tickle in the throat that always makes me want to cough (but I’m able to hold it).
    - super dry throat(the dryness even wakes me up at night)
    - A lump/mucus in the throat sensation(which I had in the past).
    - Difficulty swallowing as if foods get stuck in the throat and not going down smoothly
    - Shortness of breath and chest tightness that keep making me want to take deep breaths.
No pain. COVID tested negative. Got brushed off by my GP with anxiety, I was like gosh here we go…and come on if I would have an anxiety/panic attack, it must be triggered by the throat problems, and not the other way around.
So I had to research it myself and it looks like LPR but I’m not sure. I don’t feel any heartburn or any acidic taste, but I do have some belching. Tried Gaviscon and didn’t seem to help, got prescribed PPI and I’m not counting on it to much either…It’s really frustrating.

I'm going through this and it's so terrible to deal with. My main symptoms are whenever I eat something, it always feels like my food is stuck at the center of my throat or on the side. It would cause me to panic when it happens, because I'm worried on possibly choking to death and then I would have difficulty swallowing and it would happen so instantly like if there was an actual piece of food stuck, even though there is not since I'm not choking on the food and I could still eat and drink. I just got diagnosed today and my doctor said I have LPR and GERD. He recommended me to take omperazole for 2 weeks and then to see him again, so hoping the medicine works out for me. I've been dealing with these symptoms for 24/7 and I honestly just want to stop stressing about it.

Before you take any PPI’s do some research on the Internet. Once I was put on them they just left me on them for three years. Then I find out they are just so dangerous over long-term and can have life-threatening consequences. They say your stomach needs acid to make the top of oesophageal valve close so people resort to cider vinegar drinks. I had an operation, they said it was for a hiatal hernia, so I went through all the tests had the operation and I still have silent reflux which I think is gas coming up from my stomach as I belch a lot after the operation. I feel they have really messed me up.

Sounds very like what ive been dealing with.Began last september as a pretty localized sore throat that was treated with antibiotics and it kinda went away but came back.Subsequently ivè had three other types of antibiotics and its still ongoing(My doctor ended up in hospital himself so i had to go to a kind of locum).Out of frustration i went into a pharmacy to have a throat swab test and it turns out it was not bacterial, arrrggghh ! ....and now our great big new friend covid has put a major spanner in the works; My Actual Doctor was going to refer me to a specialist but now im in a total limbo.I`ve been taking gaviscon and ppi`s..even raised the head of my bed but little or no difference,in fact my throat seems to be getting a little worse. This really is frustrating.Hope its not throat cancer as obviously the corona virus has devastated normal services.

My gastroenterologist told me the same thing: that after being on PPIs for months, quitting can actually cause more acid production than before the PPIs were started. She did say H2 blockers like Pepcid (famotidine) don't cause the extra acid when discontinued, don't know why. So I am switching from omeprazole (PPI) to famotidine (H2 blocker) for a few months, then will taper off the H2 blocker. Hopefully this way I can minimize any "acid rebound."

    • @Refluxuk
      @Refluxuk  Před 7 měsíci

Sorry to hear you're struggling with you reflux - did you know 20-30% of the population in the UK suffers from frequent and or severe reflux symptoms. Lifestyle changes can really help alleviate some of these, but as everyone's reflux is different the changes you need to make will be different to other people too!
Some common ones include using a few pillows at night and not eating too late. Many people find behavioural changes when eating (such as slowing down, taking pauses between bites and chewing food for longer) can help a lot. Other things like exercise, losing weight, reducing caffeine and chocolate etc. can help too! It's always worth speaking to a clinician to find out what you can do to get treated and to get a formal diagnosis with proper testing.
