I have read myself an old Arab text speaking of the Templars, it described them as the most valiant and brave fighters among the Crusaders, they were the ones to stand their grounds till the end, even in a losing fight.
They were heavily armored the tanks of the period, This was equivalent of modern-day army against much larger foe ...in modern terms, this would be like America fighting NKorea on its soil.
Shuai Zhao horses were extremely expensive in those days. It was mostly something only the rich could afford and most cavalry that had proper trained horses for war were borrowed from the military not owned by the individual soldier. It was also the best form of transport at the time providing both speed and manoeuvrability. A good horse was worth a hell of a lot. Killing his horse ensures that he's stuck with all the tack it includes and he will be stuck on foot until he can either buy another (assuming he has the funds and access to horses to chose from) or the military gives him one which he would then be expected to surrender upon leaving the army or if a superior asks for the animal. It also means that if a battle occurs where cavalry is used that if or when a retreat is issued he would be expected to be part of the group that covers the retreat as cavalry is only useful if it is moving. The moment the horse stops the rider is pretty screwed as the average sword isn't quite long enough to do quick and serious damage unless you hit very important parts like the head.... Which is generally either protected or not staying still so you can hit it. Meanwhile the opposition is likely either using a pike or spear of some sort giving them the advantage of weapon length... Or a sword like the rider. And if the rider won't just die? While you can always gut the horse and it will likely trap the rider when it falls giving an easier target or cut the girth strap. Another common strategy was to slice along the leg either to try for the artery or to cause the leg to jerk from pain freaking the horse out further and making it rear. His armour and gear (both quality, type, and amount) would single him out as a more important target among foot soldiers. Being on horseback during military campaigns also means you are seen what with being seated higher then everyone else and all. It makes it much easier to direct people while still being able to get the hell out of the way if necessary. (Fights tend to be loud and messy.) There's also the matter that a horse can carry more then a human could ever hope to so if necessary you could load the horse with food and water and go on foot allowing you to travel further then if you were on foot. There was no guarantee that springs or wells between cities were safe to drink from (or in cities for that matter) but it was generally safer to use a supply that a town or city had then one on the road.

The reputation of the Templars has been tarnished. Obviously by the French king. But also by the Assassin's Creed games (for those who play them obvs). In those games the Templars start off as evil oppressors. They later evolve but still are the enemy to the protagonist. The real Templars weren't really like that. But the Knights themselves were the very definition of what a knight should be; honourable, chivalrous, faithful, loyal, and fearless. It isn't about that. It isn't a revenge for the horse. But taking back his mercy because as they killed the horse they said: ok, it isn't over yet, man, come on.
Of course. He was making a point and sending a message to others of his tribe (Templar s) by letting them live, for killing strangers not of his tribe, but within his territory. But to make it personal by killing his horse? The insult can not be forgiven. And the others may have lived if they had not gotten involved, accepted the message and delivered it to the rest of the tribe.
Everyone in the comments explaining that a battle horse costs time and money to train and so that's why he reacted this way... Guys, he just loved his horse. Just watch the movie, it's crystal clear.
tsuba .666 also in Templar code it’s forbidden to eat your horse if starving your becomes your friend and you it’s so yeah he loved it also it never cost money to train it they always had the proper training and equipment
Yes, he had this fine horse since he was a boy and loved the steed immensely. Yours is the correct comment regarding the hose. it had NOTHING to do with the horses training.
The guy just dismounted the three of us like a total champ, let's kill his horse out of petty malice just to see what happens; Darwinism to its finest.
The reason he was annoyed was because under templar law they could only own 1 horse and that was for thier own transport and they paid for the horses themselves - Hence forth why you never ever attacked their horses
I cant see the logic of that one knight to kill Arn's horse after he single-handily took out 3 people on his own. What does he expect to happen after he kills the horse?
As I Norwegian myself, I thought it was extremely cringeworthy that Harald (the blonde Viking dude) was speaking modern eastern norwegian, without any alterations to his accent. They could at least have made him try to make it sound a bit more formal to suit the historical setting (nvm the fact that norwegian and swedish were pretty much the same languages at the time). Just too bad that they skipped most the Templar/Holy Land stuff in the movie/series. The 2nd book (about Arns 20 years as a Templar) was my favourite, but the series mainly focused on the material from the 1st and 3rd books (his youth/teen years up until joining the Templars, and the time after his return to Sweden). I also feel like they failed to portay just how badass Arn was supposed to be. In the books, you are constantly reminded that the Templars were the best trained soldiers of all of Europe, essentially a Medieval Special Forces, and that Arn used this knowledge to reform the Swedish (Sweden didn't yet exist as a nation, but let's just use that term anyway) military once he returned. We do see them training, but nothing about the reasons and explainations about it, which was a vital part of the 3rd book.
It is a film and a bargain is struck between director (author) and audience (reader). For the director demands in return some work of you. It requires on your part a 'suspension of belief' or else the film (or book, or play) can not work. It was never meant to be a realistic 'recreation': for that you have, well, life! In the word's of Shakespeare* when all he had was a crude wooden stage on which 'create a mirage of reality But pardon, gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object: can this cockpit hold The vasty fields of France? Or may we cram Within this wooden O the very casques That did affright the air at Agincourt? O, pardon! And let us, On your imaginary forces work. Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts; Think when we talk of horses, that you see them Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth; For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings, Carry them here and there...... So, you see, put in the work, use your mind and your imagination. Failing that you can watch cartoons or read comics! * Henry V (Prologue)
Arn acts the way a Templar SHOULD ACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A true knight defends the weak. Regardless of what faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wrong. You never even saw this movie. Arn's entire life was spent honoring and trusting the lord's work. He shouldn't have turned his back on him but that's no cause to relinquish all honor.
The Knights Templar were not just "any crusader"! There only mission was to actualize justice and Christ's peace by protecting the Christian pilgrims and innocent of any faith. According to Muslim sources the Templar knights were respected and generally on good terms with the local Muslim population, in which they traded and interacted with, which is why some Christians falsely claimed that they were heretical.
John Parisot de la Valette was a Knight Hospitaler. He was the grandmaster of the Knights of St. John who fought and successfully repulsed the Turks at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, in which the vastly outnumbered Christians held out for over 3 months against an Ottoman force containing no less than 30,000 soldiers, including the Janissaries, as well as the Sultan's fleet of some 193 ships. He is one of the greatest Christian patriots of all time!
Thank you. Yes, 3 books. Excellent. Supposedly based on an actual person, the founder of Sweden. His eventual wife suffered as much as he while staying in a nunnery after having delivered his son.
goodness and benevolence are shown in the character of a person when that person deals with others, animal or people, weaker that them...bullies always abuse those weaker than them
No respectable swordsman would ever sheath his weapon without wiping it down first. If that had sword had sand on it, it could prevent him from removing it from the scabbard. That's also why blood needs to be cleaned off. Movies are always showing them sticking their swords in ground. That's a great way to dull an edged weapon.
It's really quite hard to hit your target with a couched lance. But considering he's a trained knight with enough confidence to bring a lance into battle, I doubt he'd miss. It's probably just God's work.
Where is the realistic combat, there is only cuts,no choreography,Its hard to understand anything, lazy action scene like most swordfighting movies, nothing spesific
Do you own the international cut or both movies as a whole? This belongs to the 2nd movie, and if I'm not mistaken it was eliminated during the international cut. The scene that follows, with the elder of the tribe comforting Arn after he was forced to put his horse down, is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movie.
For a Knight Templar his Horse is his Brother his Best friend! In the Crusaders wars several Knights and their squires take the arrows and Blows of the swords intended to kill their Horse! K
Bad name is given by the people like the ones who killed thousands of women and children in Jerusalem/surroundings in the name of Jesus!!! what kind of LOVE was that??
@@hafiznauman8029 Knights Templar never killed children or Women, the Knights Orden of the Templars was founded only AFTER the conquest of Jerusalem. Muslim Warriors killed a lot more Christian Women and Children when they conquered Jerusalem. They started the War when they killed Christian Pilgers and closed the holy Land for them.

@@Rha_Ky_Kusovai3532 battle dosnt involve knifing someone in the back that is what more or less was done id have killed him too
Killing the guys horse, the medieval equivalent of killing John wicks dog.
Kills many innocent people.
Arn: Beats them up.
Kills his horse.
Arn: Kills every single one of them. Making sure they are dead.
@Erwin Rommel Of course
It isn't about that. It isn't a revenge for the horse. But taking back his mercy because as they killed the horse they said: ok, it isn't over yet, man, come on.
💯💯
@@aaronsparx8253 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Everyone in the comments explaining that a battle horse costs time and money to train and so that's why he reacted this way...
Guys, he just loved his horse.
Just watch the movie, it's crystal clear.
tsuba .666 also in Templar code it’s forbidden to eat your horse if starving your becomes your friend and you it’s so yeah he loved it also it never cost money to train it they always had the proper training and equipment
Yes, he had this fine horse since he was a boy and loved the steed immensely. Yours is the correct comment regarding the hose. it had NOTHING to do with the horses training.
His name is chamsiir... Desert wind given to him by his mentor...

True that.
everyone should watch this film at least once, epic!
never kill a templars mount their mount is their best friend and brother
Thats too much love i think
They usually had more than 2 horses.
and sometimes their father as well
@@kvitravn6354 Terribly wrong. Actually 2 Templar had one horse. Or... 1 horse had two Temlars, from the horse point of view.
Maybe I should watch the movie again. This seen is so good. Thrilling and sad. I am deeply touched.
Very nice heroic way of telling thanks helping a fallen man to get up and pardoning off. That should be spirit of a true warrior.
One of the most incredible movies. Arn was s true warrior of god.
And the Best actor......
Horse.
The guy just dismounted the three of us like a total champ, let's kill his horse out of petty malice just to see what happens; Darwinism to its finest.
he'll probably just walk away
Unreal scene. Summed up so much in so little time.
Like someone once told me "there are the things you don't mess with, a mans wife, a mans money and a mans horse". I'd say he got off pretty light.
+jesse walby Pretty much, also the price of that warhorse was probably astronomical, kinda like having a Lamborghini Murcielago nowadays.
Yeah, probably worth quite a bit.
The reason he was annoyed was because under templar law they could only own 1 horse and that was for thier own transport and they paid for the horses themselves - Hence forth why you never ever attacked their horses
@@evangiles9249 and probably he loved that horse too
So much for chivalry! Killing a knights horse after he showed you mercy
I cant see the logic of that one knight to kill Arn's horse after he single-handily took out 3 people on his own. What does he expect to happen after he kills the horse?
That knight had a death wish, really dumb move
Currently reading this trilogy. Fantastic books. I watched the movie back in the day when Netflix mailed discs to your house.
Quality upload!!Thanks.
+Melodeath00 They also speak modern Swedish, English and Arabic. Greetings from Sweden :P
Melodeath00 I agree. My favourite part of the book as well. I loved how he organized and trained his squads of knights in Sweden.
It is a film and a bargain is struck between director (author) and audience (reader).
For the director demands in return some work of you.
It requires on your part a 'suspension of belief' or else the film (or book, or play) can not work.
It was never meant to be a realistic 'recreation': for that you have, well, life!
In the word's of Shakespeare* when all he had was a crude wooden stage on which 'create a mirage of reality
But pardon, gentles all,
The flat unraised spirits that have dared
On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth
So great an object: can this cockpit hold
The vasty fields of France? Or may we cram
Within this wooden O the very casques
That did affright the air at Agincourt?
O, pardon!
And let us, On your imaginary forces work.
Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts;
Think when we talk of horses, that you see them
Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth;
For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings,
Carry them here and there......
So, you see, put in the work, use your mind and your imagination. Failing that you can watch cartoons or read comics!

Watch Arn several times, great film.
One of the best films seen in a long time should be more crusader films made but not by Hollywood brilliant actor that sweedish guy
Ah yeah, it's been so long since I watched this I forgot there were multiple films. I'll have to watch them again man, I forgot so much.
revive the knights templar.
And do what with them? Perhaps wage a new crusade?
+Ja Bošnjak1461 Yeah

Knights Templar is long dead.
However, Knights Hospitaller, the Teutonic Knights and the Order of Santiago are still alive.
yes revive the crusades and fight isis.
This hurt.
Cried like a baby.
Still can't watch it all.
Moral of the story, being honourable gets you nowhere. Fight to kill, and never leave your enemy able to fight again.
Bryan Ouellet is he wrong though
Wrong. You never even saw this movie. Arn's entire life was spent honoring and trusting the lord's work. He shouldn't have turned his back on him but that's no cause to relinquish all honor.
Yep
Fight like a ninja and not like a samurai
He gave him another chance at life, and the guy threw it away by killing his horse.
Bullshit. USDA Choice 100% bullshit. There is NO historical evidence for that whatsoever, you pulled it out of your ass.
Its not bullshit though. They were the poor knights of Solomon's temple tasked with defending the roads for pillgrims. muslim and christian
This video captured the essence of what it meant to fight with honor and the Lord.
This is a very good movie !
Being a cowboy , this part made me mad then , and still does !!!
I remember reading these books. Super good historical fiction
Thank you. Yes, 3 books. Excellent.
Supposedly based on an actual person, the founder of Sweden. His eventual wife suffered as much as he while staying in a nunnery after having delivered his son.
I cried when I read this part in the book :(
The most satisfying thing i've ever seen 4:18
Nice horse riding and beautiful horses! ... no horses were hurt in this movie, no trip wires... Very good!

This had me in tears..
AMAZING MOVIE!!!! A MUST WATCH!!!!!!
Yes, I can' t bear this scene too! I love my animals so much and nobody should do them any harm!
Thats why i always clean my mace. Just in case the scabb... wait.
@@dektarey4024 where did you get a mace scabbard? I need one! lol
Going to watch all of them now

My problem with Arn is that he was gonna let that SOB live after he butchered unarmed civilians and didn't express any remorse.
+fl333r my problem with him was that he didn't congratulate and help a humble lord doing his duty to the cross.
@@Ianassa91 and my problem is that Arn killed those three cowards so quickly. Would have loved to see them suffer a bit more
How could he avoid charging rider with a couched lance much longer than his sword and manage to cut his back? Never worked for me in M&B Warband :)
Hahaha this was exactly my words whilst watching it, couched Lance o.p
Because he’s Arn the Templar
Because the director said so 😄
It's really quite hard to hit your target with a couched lance. But considering he's a trained knight with enough confidence to bring a lance into battle, I doubt he'd miss. It's probably just God's work.

Love how they scream when attacking from behind. Excellent tactic.
wow that was good.
By far, this movie has been the best rendering of "realistic" medieval combat to date (IMO).
Where is the realistic combat, there is only cuts,no choreography,Its hard to understand anything, lazy action scene like most swordfighting movies, nothing spesific
There is no realistic combat in this movie at all go look at the movie called "potop" fight scene it is great sabre duel
Apparently in your opinion as someone with no historical knowledge at all.
if only there more Knight like Arn during the Crusade
What a movie!! Whew!!!!

I own this film on DVD and don't remeber this scene. Is there an alternate version I don't know about ?
Do you own the international cut or both movies as a whole? This belongs to the 2nd movie, and if I'm not mistaken it was eliminated during the international cut. The scene that follows, with the elder of the tribe comforting Arn after he was forced to put his horse down, is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movie.
Elí Daniel García Martínez theirs a 2nd one?
prydonian460 There are two versions of the movie. One movie version 134 mins. Also the tv serial version 265 mins. I bought both versions on Amazon.

knights templar good guys given a bad name
Most of them are corrupted during their final days... Every first generations are the good ones....
Shiro Fukuroi King Guy was the reason, he Commanded 100% of the Knight Templars, except the crusading states.

@@bakaweiner6956 lies spread by the corrupt church
@@hafiznauman8029 Knights Templar never killed children or Women, the Knights Orden of the Templars was founded only AFTER the conquest of Jerusalem. Muslim Warriors killed a lot more Christian Women and Children when they conquered Jerusalem. They started the War when they killed Christian Pilgers and closed the holy Land for them.
This love with the templer and the horse reminds me of the Love between legendary Rajput ruler Maharana Pratap and his famous horse Chetak. Chetak saved the life of Maharana Pratap in the battle and took him across the river which the other enemy horses can't do so.
