      I love it, as well +theneedledrop, solid review. I am super stoked to see them perform soon in BK, March 22.
      My take on the opener is that the concept is a character legitimizing killing their child. The litany of "no's" refer to all the things the child will not have to endure because they will not exist after they obey the command to "Come, child," and lose all. That's my take on it, anyway.
      As ridiculously heavy as the content and instrumentation is here (but hey! It is a SWANS record, duh!), I am repeatedly gobsmacked by the brilliance and snarl that builds and builds and builds over the whole lp. The balance between grace and raw unadulterated power leaves me breathless, and simultaneously, highly inspired to go create.

    • @mybloodyboognish
      @mybloodyboognish Před 10 lety +7

    • @RayasNegroOvejas
      @RayasNegroOvejas Před 10 lety +4

      mybloodyboognish Well, you might look at the wrong things if you consider sliced bread great. But prefer stuff like baguette personally. And personally I think "Benji" feels natural and honest. You write "long winded stream of consciousness..." like it's a bad thing but that's what I love with the album.

    • @SteMail926
      @SteMail926 Před 10 lety +6

      mybloodyboognish Benji, for me at least, is such a raw, intimate album, and the stories told in it are heartbreaking in terms of both performance and lyrics. It's long winded, yes, but that's what's so good about it. It's honest and real. But that could be just me! (and RayasNegroOvejas )

    Speaking of David Lynch, Toussaint L'Ouverture really reminds me of the Club Silencio scene in Mulholland Drive, I keep expecting Gira to shout 'NO HAY BANDA!' haha.
    I wasn't sure if I was feeling a 10 for this at first, I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't as much stylistic variety as on The Seer but the more I listen the more it's opening up to me and I think I'm starting to prefer it. It's so fun to get lost in the rhythms of this album, and Gira's vocals sit brilliantly over the top of them, he sounds like a crazy pastor. Fantastic stuff.
