  • Don't let adjusting your Honda CRF450L's valves scare you. In this video, we'll go through the steps to pull your cam, remove the old shim, calculate how thick the new shim needs to be, then re-assemble everything. All you'll need is your basic set of tools, a set of thickness gauges, a micrometer (or not), and a torque wrench.
    Here's the "How to Check Your Valve Clearance" video - • How To Check Valve Cle...
    FOR THE RECORD: I did not have to adjust this valve at this point. At 13,000 miles the valve was still in spec, but I had the top end open so I made a video of what a valve adjustment would look like, if it needed one.

    I want to put out a huge thank to you! First time I’ve ever messed with valves and was scared I was gonna blow the bike. I followed your video and it was exactly what the job entailed. I just fired it up and it sounds better than ever! Thank you again for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive yet easy to follow step by step guide. Much appreciated and keep up the good work! Follow!

  • @vanman724
    @vanman724 Před 2 lety +1

    Clear as usual John and good cautionary tips. You must be close to recommended rings/piston replacement? Think you'll be able stretch that interval out? What would be the driver for that major maintenance? Oil analysis results? Still showing fair bit of fuel in your oil?

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  Před 2 lety +2

      A compression leak down and then the valves start to show some signs of moving. And of course the bank account test....
      I haven't done another oil analysis in a while, but I guess I ought to.

  • @Disting2

    Nicely presented however made the valve shim measurement complicated. Without maths, measure shim and select the next size up or down according to requirement. Like if you have a .020 gap and you need .015 gap pick a shim .005 thicker. No maths involved. Get a digital vernier or micrometer makes reading the measurements so easy.
    Followed you're advice about the Athena Get
    ecu for my horribly restricted Thailand 450rl and along with a correct inlet manifold rubber the bike has gone from garbage to excellent.
    Also have a 15L TANK.
    Keep up the excellent videos.

    dumb question....i have two strokes so this is the first before me.....any chance the cam chain could slip off the crank gear or slip a tooth while hanging with the zip tie? Another question What do you think of this bike as a light adv bike to get me about 100 miles of mixed tarmac to camp.....200 miles of gravel, dirt, double and single track and 100 miles back. I've read conflicting reports about not having a cush drive. Thanks!!

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The zip tie just keeps the chain from falling into the crank case. The alignment marks are on the crank and the cams.
      I’ve got 22,000 miles on my bike with no Kush drive and it’s still going fine…
