For 38 years, Sudhanshu's passion for innovation burned bright within the Indian Railways. As General Manager at the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, he dared to dream of a cost-effective, self-propelled train that could zip across India at an incredible 180 km/h.
When plans to import expensive high-speed trains emerged, Sudhanshu had a bold idea: create a fully INDIAN alternative! He rallied a team of 50 brilliant engineers and 500 dedicated factory workers. Together, they embarked on a mission to design and build the Vande Bharat Express prototype in a record-breaking 18 MONTHS!
Overcoming technical hurdles like integrating the engine for faster acceleration, the team's problem-solving skills and innovative spirit shone through. Originally called Train 18, the marvel surpassed expectations during trials, beating the bullet train by a whopping 52 seconds! This remarkable feat proved Sudhanshu's vision: a semi-high-speed train without a conventional engine was a reality.
Honoring both Sudhanshu's dedication and India's rich heritage, the train was christened Vande Bharat Express. Today, Sudhanshu Mani is rightfully hailed as the "Father of Vande Bharat Trains", leaving an indelible mark on Indian railways.

This train Vande Bharat is symbolic for India, to showcase transformation that is happening and touching even the common man. We were wondering last 5 decades if ever this would be possible in India whenever we see pix of Japanese and European trains. Now it is a reality and the beginning. We must take pride and do our bit in maintaining it .

Great design and out of box thinking sir , In India it would not be possible to spent public money to do any project without approval of drawings from RDSO and sanction of Project from MR/RB and sanction of funds , there a lot of justification may be asked by the finance dept, to justify everyone and lonely to took decision to make a train 18 requires a lot of courage sir , नही तोह अभी के ऑफिसर यही सोचते है, बोर्ड ने बोला है क्या? ड्रॉइंग approvel है क्या? Kuch galat hua toh , vigilance pad गयी toh ??? ऐसे बहोत सारे question ke sath अभी के ऑफिसर्स apni so called duty kar rahe hai sir,,,but you are true inspiration to that officers Jo bas दिन भर रहे है....
