This is my Second time beating this "mother". Pun Pun If your not familiar with Earthbound, you really owe it to yourself to play it. It is a masterpiece.
First time I fought it I had no idea that you had to pray and I spent hours upon hours using every last attack and healing item I could. I felt like such an idiot not having looked up the solution.

Tip: There's an "alternative" ending scene. If you want to see it, you can teleport to Onett instead of leaving Paula at home. If you do it, Paula will ask if it's okay for her to stay. Then, say yes. Paula will stay with Ness's family and will be introduced as his gf.

Some small tips for Giygas, buy night pendants from the Mr. Saturn merchant and equip them to everyone to be immune to what is essentially PSI Flash Omega (most powerful version of flash that can auto kill or inflict ailments like paralysis) and also have Poo use PSI Freeze a to try and solidify Giygas to keep him from moving and to get a free pray with Paula. So every turn of the battle should be; Ness, heal or defend. Paula, Pray. Jeff, almost always defend or heal with items if needed. Poo, use PSI Freeze a to try and solidify Giygas, if you run out of PP, then either defend or use an item to restore it.

I fell in love with this battle the 2nd or 3rd time I saw it, then I showed it to my poor friends with little context. Also, to make this battle more depressing, enter Ness' name as "Maria". (For those of you who don't know, there's lore. You won't regret reading it. You'll never look at Giygas the same way again.)
I remember the first time playing Earthbound, it was past midnight and i was alone, really anxious fighting Giygas and didn't know what to do, i had to look on the internet (i already knew that you had to pray but i forgot it) and started praying and i forgot that you enter your name and the begining of the game and when the game started to call me for my pray i was really scared.
Since Giygas cannot think rationally, his attacks are pretty much random. They could do just 1 damage point or instantly kill some party members at the same time.
Giygas used PSI Flash which has a chance to instantly defeat an opponent. You can’t get insta-killed by damage, since it always takes time to roll down. Hope you’re still curious after 2 years :’)
Earthbound was a game made like something from the imagination of a child. In a way, Giygas makes since in this theme. It looks like the result of a child seeing something he wasn’t supposed to see and letting his imagination go crazy.
random panda Nintendo isn't just about child friendly Mario and Pokemon games. Ther Mother series is more in the Teen range (despite it being E or E10+) and it's emotional. (Kinda similar to how Bayonetta is Mature because of it's mature themes)
When Pokey says, "Why not call your mommy, Ness!" You now have to choose Paula, in order to pray. Because that's how you would make Giygas's defense lower, in order to beat the game.
Growing up, I always felt that the method to defeating Giygas reminded me of using the Spirit bomb from Dragon Ball Z, but maybe that's just because as a teen, I got exposed to tons of media.
This boss was epic! The challenge, the music, this is what a final boss should be! I feel like modern games, aside of the Souls games, have easy final bosses. Some easier than the first boss depending on the game.
It's disturbing, but when we fight with giygas we can feel for ness and his friends, still it being just a game characters, and i love how mother series smash the fourth wall
i still think pokey's dialogue (both opening and closing the first phase of the battle) isn't appreciated enough here. Hard to describe why, i just think it suits this battle and earthbound as a whole.

Just finished beating this game for like the 10th time in my life. This game is so amazing and memorable. It will remain a masterpiece forever.

I have never had more discomfort in my life before watching this video
Growing up, I always felt that the method to defeating Giygas reminded me of using the Spirit bomb from Dragon Ball Z, but maybe that's just because as a teen, I got exposed to tons of media.
The spirit bomb probably would've did some major damage to Giygas before Goku reminds him of Maria and we get a new Z Fighter
This boss was epic! The challenge, the music, this is what a final boss should be! I feel like modern games, aside of the Souls games, have easy final bosses. Some easier than the first boss depending on the game.
Earthbound was a lot scarier than I remember

It's disturbing, but when we fight with giygas we can feel for ness and his friends, still it being just a game characters, and i love how mother series smash the fourth wall

ngl, after finding out giygas' lore this feels more sad than scary
i still think pokey's dialogue (both opening and closing the first phase of the battle) isn't appreciated enough here. Hard to describe why, i just think it suits this battle and earthbound as a whole.
Giygas feels like he wants to do something about it.

Not so fun fact: this final boss is based on the creators traumatic experience of entering the wrong theater as a kid and seeing horrors worse than torture that lost his innocence
