Song: Biggering - The 88 (The Lorax Demo 2012 Illumination)
    Done on ibisPaint X
I definitely got inspired by Gloriadrewthis’s (Whysoanimated) Biggering Storyboard in some of the scenes. As well as “The Lorax” 2012 concept art, “The Lorax” 1972 film, and Dr. Seuss “The Lorax” 1971 book.
    (I might eventually remake it)

Hello everyone! Thank you all for watching. This storyboard and everyone who watched it made an amazing impact on my life, as it was the first step into my career journey. Within the past year, I’ve been deciding whether or not to recreate it. Unfortunately with all the work stacking up and having a change of interest, I am going to set this storyboard aside and not continue it in the future. As well as leaving this Channel behind.
It has been a wonderful experience and a very surreal moment for me to see so many people enjoying this video. Thank you again!

Onceler Pride is showing little care to the ones lower to him as he is now above them all. He is showing no care especially when he says "Who cares if some things are dying" showing that he literally knows his actions are wrong but his Pride is getting the better of him. Yeah, the entire point of the Onceler in the original story is that he can be anyone, an allegory that all of us are just as prone to the greed and pride that corrupted him into making a horrible mistake, hence why he's faceless. A version like this that slowly causes him to literally lose himself until he becomes a shadow with arms would have been the perfect modernization of that concept, as everything that makes us who we are can and will erode and be erased by greed and pride if we allow it, and thus become the Onceler.
It also, however, served to show that the Onceler was not beyond redemption either as he also represented how anyone can rebound from such mistakes too, as he kept that final seed and protected it by learning his lesson. It would have been incredible for a darker toned Lorax movie to have the Onceler in the post-book setting to slowly regain and colors and face by helping the protagonists, literally regaining his humanity in a sense.

It's kind of like why Gandalf didn't trust himself to throw the One Ring into Mt. Doom himself: he knows that he can't trust himself to do what must be done so instead he looks for someone more reliable to guide and help to do so. It's a layer of a redemption narrative that shows that the road to redemption can be broken and undone if not careful, kind of like trying to rebound from a drug addiction.

Change can be made without the cost of the economy and of people's livelihoods though difficult that option is there and will continue to unless something isn't stopped. Furthermore Socialism is not synonymous with dictatorship it has only been tried a handful of times and each time has led to disaster mainly due to the fact that Socialism in these cases never came around legally and or naturally instead being forced on by strife where it is easy for power to be wrested from the hands that seek improvement look at Stalin in this instance, but that is not due to Socialism itself.

This episode, if animated with the song, would've singlehandedly made a movie. It's not only has a references to an original book, but also expanding its plot to the some extent. In the original, Lorax tried to convince Onceler to at least adequately use the nature's resources for its industry, to keep both Industry and nature alive. And here, Lorax is fighting something way more deep - the reason of that inadequate behaviour in the first place - the Pride in Onceler himself. He's not trying to save the trees, but the Onceler.
The Greed took over Onceler, and Lorax warns him to stop feeding the internal beast, or it will grow bigger. But Onceler response is "You know what? I WANT it to grow bigger. And bigger. *AND BIGGER.* "

However, we as the audience know the truth of the consequences of the Onceler's success, so practically they think they are praising a hero when in reality they are praising pride and greed, and the Onceler knows it.

It’s easy for us to say “well I’m not that greedy, that would never happen to me.” But you know what’s so much easier to relate to than greed? Pride. Everyone has pride. It’s why we reflexively get defensive or hurt when someone points out our mistakes and flaws. It’s why we want others to love us, sometimes to the point of hiding who we truly are. It’s even why we hate ourselves, because our pride makes us feel like we need to be an unreachable ideal.

If any indie film does give it a go, then they *have* to add in "Biggering." It's too good to leave as just a soundtrack and some storyboards. It stays true to Dr. Seuss' original vision, it humanises the Once-ler, makes us understand why he never stops or slows down, and shows how anyone can go from an innocent harmless soul to a corporate sociopath. Not to mention the Lorax himself has more weight and agency added to his character, as he's not just trying to save the environment, but he's also trying to save the Once-ler from himself.

He knows that he's destroying everything, but what's the worth of someone else's everything compared to HIS everything? This song, especially toward the end, just hits the right buttons for "going forward, but in the wrong way." Waaay better than what we got.
The visuals here are straight out of a kids movie as well. Not overly dark to be morbid for the kids (like dying animals and people suffering from pollution illnesses), but dark enough to get the message and tone across. Like him at his podium like a dictator, lights upon him from below, and his crazy smiling face as he justifies his horrible actions as well as him dripping with oil, face concealed, looming like a great demon over the land he rendered bare. Everything is perfect. He's dark and grizzled, but not overly so. This achieves a balance of kid-friendly and extremely dark and evil.

I don’t know how I missed this but this animatic is literally perfect! @marstothestars33 Před rokem +37

A few parallels I noticed between How Bad Can I Be and Biggering:
•In How Bad Can I Be, The Lorax is solely concerned with saving the truffula trees. In Biggering, not only is he trying to save the environment, he’s also trying to save the Onceler himself.
•In How Bad Can I Be, the whole thing still remains somewhat catchy, despite the last part getting louder and more abrasive, whereas in Biggering, it’s not your convential song, but rather like those you hear in a musical: ones that tell a story. Its a biopic. While How Bad Can I Be constantly pleads its innocence, Biggering never even tries to mask what its doing. It never once tries to reassure or convince. It instead showcases a man's eventual descent into corporate greed and something toeing the line of insanity.
•And the most interesting one, while in How Bad Can I Be it says “Who cares if a few trees are dying?,” Biggering instead uses the words, “Who cares if a few *things* are dying?” This is implying that instead of just the trees dying like we saw in the movie, like true industrial destruction, it ruins so much more than that. We’re talking animals and maybe even *people.*
Conclusion? Take it for what you will. I think both songs are good, but to me, Biggering really does just pack more of a punch, specifically in that it is not afraid to lean on the darker side, whereas How Bad Can I Be simply asks the question, but never really gets the person thinking about it. And to everyone saying they wish this was in The Lorax instead, I totally agree. However, because Biggering is darker than the entirety of the movie combined, I feel like the movie would either have to be severely or entirely changed to make such a piece fit. And really, I don’t see Illumination doing a super serious type movie anytime soon. It’s just not their style.

I've been obsessed with this song and animatic for quite a bit now! It's SOOO good!!
THIS is what Illumination should've done for the movie. Not only keep the song in, but also have them reference the original faceless Once-ler from Seuss' book. As a fan of Seuss, i've always been ticked off by how they gave the Once-ler a face, unlike the book where all we ever saw of his body was his glowing yellow eyes and, most famously, his green-gloved arms. Showing him fully just took away the mystery of the character.
But what this artist came up with was a GENIUS idea: the Once-ler in the film could've become faceless as soon as he begins to lose his sanity. Imagine if that idea was incorporated into the feature.
All in all, this was great to watch (even though i've already watched a few times before writing this comment).
I honestly think you did Seuss' work justice better than most film studios have tried.

Plus, they're owned by Universal, a big corporation, which is, ironically, the very thing Seuss criticised in his book. I mean, how do you even make an anti-corporate movie when your studio is, in fact, owned by one? It'd be quite tricky to do so, i reckon.

Most of them start out with the Once-Ler already big, but the song really seems to imply it starts off with him nearer the beginning of his journey. Doing it this way lets us really see the moment he looks at what he's doing and *decides* that Biggering is worth whatever he has to kill. And like other folks have said, increasingly darkening his face and letting him be symbolized more by his gloved hands, grasping to claim everything, really really works. That reworked shot from the original movie of him standing over the forest is *particularly* effective, with his face almost dripping with darkness like some kind of eldritch horror. Damn good work.

    And it is never satisfied
    You get it?
But the more you try to find it
The more it likes to hide
    Now listen

I like to call it pride!
See now that’s why you’re biggering!

    And figgering on biggering!
But that biggering’s just triggering more biggering!
    Got that?
    All right!

There is a principle of nature that most every creature knows
It's called survival of the fittest, and this is how it goes
The animal that wins has got to claw and bite and kick and punch
The animal that doesn’t winds up someone else’s lunch
A company’s an animal that’s trying to survive
It's struggling and fighting just to keep itself alive
    I must keep on biggering!
    I’m figgering on biggering!
    Though biggering is triggering
    More biggering!
    I won’t stop biggering!
    I’m figgering on biggering!

In Biggering it's "Who cares if some *things* are dying." It was more than just the trees dying, it was the animals perishing from his greed too, and possibly people from the fumes...dang

I love how you included the theory that Ted's grandmother was Onceler's lover.

Loved that shot at 1:59-2:00 where Once-ler slips down a hill. Either to represent the metaphorical slippery slope or his slipping into corporate madness. Either way it is awesome!

I also love how he looks up to the swirling clouds to see the Lorax looking down at him. Almost as if he's being judged for his sins by God Himself. A man, corrupted beyond redemption in his lifetime, looking at the spirit whose home he destroyed.

I like the implication in this shot, that being that unlike in the final film, the mother doesn't actually want what's going on, but goes along with it for the sake of her son

I love that at 3:30 you can only see his hands just like the original nice touch

Holy shit. I love the call back to the original movie in this with the hands. I know my personal vision had Oncer's face be more and more hidden the more corrupted he got. No family or anything else. It was just his own huger driving his biggering and the more he fed it the more he was lost to it.
I kinda wished the Lorax was just his own imagination and getting a glimpse at the end of him with the mustache and eyebrows like the Lorax. Him being the one saying, "Unless..."

Wow, where do I even begin? I love the context clues that the Lorax exists in the Once-Ler's imagination (honestly I wish they took that angle with the film). I love how gradual you can see Onceler changing from his humble beginnings to faceless corporate emperor of Thneedville. There's even a reference to the first movie where you only see his green gloves peaking out of the doorway as he's gesturing to his new "utopia" (soon-to-be-dystopia) to the Lorax. I also really like that he goes from ignoring the Lorax to straight up bullying him as he shoves him around. Also, I did notice certain shots were repurposed from "How Bad Can I Be" into this with much more sinister ~flair~ and it's married with the song so well. 10/10 storyboard I'm floored.

This implies that the Lorax can still see his old self and does everything possible to save him and return to what he was before, but unfortunately it is too late.

i am extremely late to this but wow, i've watched loads of Biggering storyboards lately and this one takes the cake as the best one i've seen. the amount of research done for this and the references are just second to none, really good work
