NEW Scott Addict RC | Ludicrously Clean Looks & Disc-Only

  • Scott has released its all-new Addict RC, an impressively integrated and - much to our surprise - disc only race bike. Save for the addition of discs in 2016, this is the first major update the bike has seen since 2014.
    Lightness is still one of the most important traits of the new Addict RC - the presentation for the bike included all the usual tropes about increasing stiffness and improving aero-optimisation. However, improved, and we’re sure Scott would argue, market-leading integration is the real focus of the bike.
    Senior Staff Writer, Jack Luke travels to Switzerland to learn all about the new features and heads out on glassy smooth Swiss roads for a brief spin.
    A more in depth look at the new Addict can be found on BikeRadar.com here:

      As a current Addict rider I'm quite excited about the updates. Who doesn't want to be lighter and more aero? It is a shame that the latest crop of bikes are all looking so similar, but computational fluid dynamics and the quest for improved aerodynamics within the UCI regulations don't leave much room for drastic design changes. The new Cannondale Supersix Evo, Specialized Tarmac and new Scott Addict are all very similar, but out of those the Addict is certainly the best looking in my opinion. Excited to see some back to back comparisons once they're on the market.

      I love the new trend of cable integration in de cockpits. Many new bikes seem to have a steering stop though. I don't think the addict has this. Did they solve this issue in another way or would you be able to destroy the cables by a forceful steering action (or a crash). Afaik destroying these steering stops in a crash can destroy the frame as well, but there is barely any info about it on the web. What's your take @bikeradar?

    While recent road bikes by BMC, Specialized, Wilier, Scott, and Cannondale are starting to look VERY similar... the Addict still looks the coolest in my opinion. I think the new stem design is a step in the right direction for combining the aesthetic and "aero" benefits of an integrated cockpit while also allowing for easier adjustments. Looking forward too (and also dreading) seeing what the price is on these. Thank you for an excellent presentation of this new bike!

      My guess is that as actual performance gains diminish, whether due to uci restrictions or present physical limits and materials available, companies will turn to fixing problems we never knew we had (like cables exposed or rim brakes or bikes being too flexy or…). Just look at the average speed of the peloton for the last 20 years (ignore the Armstrong era if you like) and you will see what difference bicycle engineering has made in the ultimate criterion of racing - how fast you get from point a to b.

    The addition of disc wheelsets especially on the higher end carbon hoops have the added benefit of swapping them over to the cross bike for race season. On the other hand you can pick up some very sweet deals on feather weight rim brake bikes due to the change over and really how often do you need disc braking power.

    I don't really get what's so great about those one piece aero cockpits. They look pretty cool, but the only possible adjustment for them is changing the height of the whole system by using spacers. No way of changing stem's length, angle & angle of the bars. And if you want to change the width of the bars, you have to change whole cockpit which would be pretty expensive (usually you don't have a chance to configure the width of the cockpit when buying new bike, as it is assigned to the frame's size). Also it is nearly impossible to mount anything on the bars or on the stem. And is 290g for the whole system that impressive? I'm sure that you can easily find lighter stem + bars combo. So that's why, when I was buying my Canyon Endurace, I made sure that it will not come with the cool looking aero cockpit.

    • @Dexxyh
      @Dexxyh Před 5 lety +1

      Luckely this Scott is offered with a fully integrated bar and stem combo as well, on the cheaper models

    • @alzibaba
      @alzibaba Před 5 lety

      The width of the bars is a biggie for me. I usually ride 40cm bars with a 12-14cm stem depending on frame top tube length, but all these combo aero cockpits seem to go to 42 or 44cm cm once the stem gets to 12 cm. Yeah, I could size up frame wise to use a shorter stem, but then the head tube gets too tall for a decent position, which seems to defeat the aero objective. And on a packaged bike, the next size up typically comes with 42 or 44cm bars. Many non sprint specailist pros seems to be going to 38-40cm bars and for me 40 is plenty wide enough even when sprinting. Currently I have an Extralite 12cm stem with 3T Carbon bars which as a combo weighs 277g total, but isn't super aero.
      I do like the thinking behind the Y-shaped bars and helping cable runs not have sharp bends. I've found running cables inside other bars often results in a tad more friction for the cable due to the sharp bends required. Here's hoping they increase the range of options available on these cockpits in the future.

    The Scott Addict is certainly clean, and beautiful. And, no doubt, it performs very well. But, setting cockpit integration aside, it does seem like quite a few high-end racing frames have pretty much the exact same features. Are CF road racing frames just one short step away from being a commodity? The differences between them have to be very, very subtle. And would those differences matter much to any athlete who isn't being paid to ride a particular Brand Name?
    Could not a well built, generic CF racing frame with 98% of those features be produced and sold for a fraction of the price?

    They could do more in those 6 years of development, I mean like they couldn't develop something revolutionizing so they just did what every bike brand does, integration, the way of saying you have to buy our product because third-party parts just won't be compatible. If you look at the Venge Vias fully integrated parts but everyone had problems with it. So the latest model doesn't include so much integration. I think Scott could learn from that. The bike isn't even light anymore, so what's the difference between Addict and Foil now? Obviously, you should wait for next year as they will, some kind, be forced to present new Foil with the same integration making Foil even more aero and most important, to make a bigger difference between Addict and Foil. With that, they will buy themselves some time and observe other brands and then again adapt their products/bikes to new ˝standards˝ which is cheaper...great marketing right. ;)

    I’m enjoying the bike so far czcams.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

But best of all it has that classic look and doesn't resemble the carbon bikes that all look cloned from the same mold. I imagine that most of the aftermarket components companies are going to start disappearing now that the major bike manufacturers are making all the parts for their bikes but that's really bad because what do you do if you need to replace a part 5 years down the road and it's no longer in production? What are you going to do, spend another $5K or $6K for a new bike? What are you going to do?

      Hydraulic brakes and electronic shifting = no cable friction ;) But yes, it's still a pain in the bum when it comes to changing anything if needed.

      @@AJSpinDrift Agree that's the ultimate setup on a very high end bike, but just isn't worth it when a rim brake bike with cable shifting works just as well in summer and costs half as much (especially if want equivalent weight). I do the maintenance of my bikes and live in a flat, so like to keep it simple unless there's a clear benefit like my CX and MTB.

      Ya mate I have two bike Colnago Titanio with art decor paint its a classic bike with one of a kind paint work so can't hide the badge and its right there blending with the marvelous paint work. The othe is Canyon Aeroad mat black with shiny black Canyon logo + top tube red lines. They are the company that only boast about all black bikes and boy or boy they are superb in presenting them. They openly says that we don't need multiple layers to market our bike the bike it self speaks what it really is. How simple and genius is that and in a other well reputed brand's state of the art modern bike launch we "Customers" speaks about it and what more they need to market it shiny huge size font letters in every tube + tiny hidden ones in all around. I don't get it.

    Integration on modern bikes is the worst. Taking away choice from the consumer. It's just cost cutting from the manufacturer and preventing you from buying other brands after market items to improve your bike.

      Simon Andert I have an Iphone... was persuaded to buy it by the Wife, never again. For the same reason.
      However my objection to this sort of bike integration is that ALL the big Bike brands are doing it and it will eventually lead to all the other companies that make the better after market parts going out of business or having a scammer market. Then you will be stuck buying only specialized parts or only cannondale parts... like a boring basic bitch who thinks they look good dressed head to toe in all one brand and riding that brand bike with all the stock parts... and they can't do any servicing themselves because everything is fully integrated and hidden under special screws like in the car industry and all the bikes will be electronic shifting so you won't be able to fix them unless you have specialist software...

    With discs, you can no longer call it a climbing bike. Sorry, it's just the way it is. With sub-6kg bikes now easy to build for under $1000, I think most people who are serious about hill climbs won't even bother looking at the addict anymore, not even as just a frame to build on.

    I’m sorry. I have to covet. I have always enjoyed bike radar. If you seem like a very nice person to make this presentation. I am seriously considering the Scott attic RC for a variety of reasons. But your review told me absolutely nothing. You deferred on specifications of hated that you ride impressions couldn’t be given because of a shortness of the ride place and Richard Road and event indicated that it’s bikes are relatively all the same except if you technical difference. I have to different with you. Bikes do ride differently. Each does have a different personality. It would be best if your reviews in the future, as I wish to give you a little constructive criticism, we’re comparisons to your existing road bike on your usual Roads. Does it feel more comfortable, stiffer, lighter, better, climbing, better sprinting, all the usual fluff that’s throated bikes in these typical bike reviews, has a cast your usual bike during your usual rides with a little explanation of your riding background and your usual Bikes and even previous bikes tested. I can’t think of one review that provides this kind of analysis. It seems as though these reviews become just like automobile reviews where reviewers wait for the preview are provided with the bike, and that her somehow too nervous to provide a candid review. Again, you seem like a very nice fellow. I apologize for the rant. But some serious critical review would be very helpful to those like myself who are seriously in the market like to understand how one by different from another. Yes, bikes are really all truly the same, then we might as well just pick them based on color how they look at the coffee shop. That’s not why I ride bikes.
