- Finally, after so many years a successor to Super Mario Sunshine! I mean, that's what Nintendo says, so hopefully it lives up to that. Super Mario Odyssey has been hyped beyond belief, and I'm excited to break-down what matters to me as a Mario veteran.
I'll be giving my synopsis on the main story as well as post-game, while trying to remain as spoiler-free as possible. It helps that I'm only using footage from three kingdoms.
This will be my first review, so hopefully I deliver a thorough analysis!

Particular Mushroom Damn good review, haven’t seen any better ones in a while for any game? Had good humour and nice pace. Maybe have slightly more interesting gameplay (I understand that you were avoiding spoilers), but apart from that, perfection at it’s pinnacle.

Your comedy game is the best it's been.
Great review Mr. Mushroom. You weren't afraid to criticize the blatant issues with the game. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but the older ones gave a sense of accomplishment regardless of it being linear. This just feels like a perpetual grind to get 39403225809358089 moons, unlock some costumes, and be disappointed by the end result. Great job avoiding spoilers as well for those who have yet to play. I feel the mechanics this game offers allows for so much more to be explored and some really good, intricate, challenging platforming to be made. I hope to see more out of Odyssey, and I highly doubt this game is the last of Cappy and his wonderful mechanics he offers.

The quality of your videos has gotten really good. I agree with your criticisms, but I'd also give this game a 5/5. I hope Odyssey gets some kind of level pack DLC at some point that really push the mechanics to their limits.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just straight up made Super Mario Odyssey 2 at this point. There are so many possibilities that they have yet to take advantage of with this game mechanic. Honestly, Cappy may be the most genius idea that Nintendo has had in over a decade, and it would be madness not to keep their creative juices flowing with a sequel.

I just wish Odyssey had a Hub mode. Like I'd buy a DLC if it made it so you had a hub world to explore freely and get moons in, but all the kingdoms only spawn one/let you collect one.

I definitely believe people saying it was difficult, but it wasn't that bad for me. I had a lot more trouble with volleyball.
I thought volleyball was hard too, but I've never played a game (until now) where you had to press B at the perfect timing, 100 times. XD

Late or not, having a 100% completion to make a review of the game is very honorable. I applaud you for being unlike most of the other people out there and only play about two or three hours of one game!
I appreciate that, thank you! But don't give me too much credit; I knew I had to 100% Odyssey because Mario games like to save interesting and difficult challenges for the end that can totally change how you perceive the game (e.g. Super Mario Galaxy 2). But thinking on this comment, I will probably try and 100% games for future reviews.

Great review. You already beat the game to 100%!? You're pretty darn good. I'm at 900 power moons, trying to get to 999, so I'm almost there too.
This video was very good! Your analysis of the sound design in the game was amazing and in-depth, and really made me look at the game in a way I never had before. That's saying something since I'm playing Odyssey a second time, pondering whether or not I should go for another 100%. You were also spot-on when analyzing the skill cap. The game itself isn't too hard, but you can create your own challenges to reach that cap. Many moons have easy ways and secret, harder ways to be collected. This makes the game accessible for both inexperienced players and skilled players alike, so the difficulty isn't much of a problem if you ask me.
There were a few things that I disagreed with in this review, most of which are tiny things. The big thing is that you said that there are few areas in the game in which you can test your skill and creative mind, but that isn't true in my opinion. Sometimes, you have to look hard, but there are certainly harder ways to achieve most of the moons. Not every moon is like this, but a large portion are. I collected several moons in crazy ways, not even realizing that I wasn't doing the main method. You kind of mentioned this, but I'm just saying that, like the Bullet Bill Sand Kingdom moon you showed, there is opportunity in many places.
Sorry for making you read all of this. I'm under the illusion that I have whole paragraphs of interesting things to say. Other than my small criticisms, this was an amazing video. Thank you for being cautious about spoilers. I'm very sensitive to them, and you being this careful is really considerate. So considerate, in fact, that I subscribed!

To be honest, I liked the controls and mechanics in sunshine more. The capture mechanic is really cool, and I love it, but a lot of times it tends to be pretty situational, and not that interesting. The controls don't feel as smooth in this game either imo (especially the sifeflip). I loved this game, but the controls just felt generally more fun in sunshine..in my opinion.
Plus seeing shadow mario preform all those tricks was a really nice subtle way of teaching you how to do more advanced moves

I played this game right when it came out, super excited to play what was sure to be the best Mario game to date. After playing the game through to the final accessible area, I was just disappointed. I am, at best, apathetic about this game. Nothing you do ever feels like it matters, nor was the process of doing it fun, and I'll never understand why so many people praise it so highly.

To be honest the moon floating above the rock in the cascade kingdom was the 38 moon I got in that kingdom

huh. i'm surprised you felt odyssey didn't have the same grandeur as galaxy did - between the story, the music, the game's overall size, and the amount of detail and depth packed into every kingdom, i consider odyssey a /much/ grander adventure than galaxy

*Ohh! Ohh! Pick me!* , I have a challenge idea!!! I call it the "No lick challenge" basically try to go as far as you can through SMW2: Yoshi's island without licking/swallowing. You can ONLY get eggs from sources other than licking, and you can add more rules,

That's an interesting idea, but the validity of it would really depend on how far you can actually get into the game.

I'd say it's a little bit of both! I choose it as part of the channel name because I liked the word, but I probably use the word even more often because of it. I need to keep from using the word too much, but every time I use it the definition fits. It's a...particularly easy word to use.
Im surprised your criticisms still netted a 5/5 score from you. It seems like you were more disappointed than impressed.
I don't really agree with the para=goomba challenge as a fair representation of all the challenges. imo the fact there's ALL TYPES, being capture challenges to platforming challenges to reflex challenges means any one challenge could never show the game well.
And in the hundreds of power moons i never found any world small. They were maybe smaller than Galaxy, but each section meant something more than a jump challenge over an easy hoop (an issue i generally have with Galaxy).
imo Odyssey is the perfect Mario game. High skill ceiling but beautiful controls. It's not perfect, but imo its flaws are just in the type of game you're playing rather than the game itself being flawed.
When I think about the worlds' size, Galaxy and Odyssey do have similar sized worlds (with Galaxy's being a bit bigger). However Galaxy has only 2 or 3 stars in each galaxy, while Odyssey tries to stuff them with 60+ in several cases. I do like this change, and do think that overall Odyssey is the better game for it, but something lost in translation is that wonderful trek of barreling through a long or challenging level filled with obstacles to reach an objective. Again though, there are a few of these experiences in Odyssey, just not the amount I expected.
(Spoilers ahead)
As another example there's that cap-less challenge in the Luncheon Kingdom with the spinning blocks. I just adored this area, one of my favorites in the game. I had a blast trying to figure out the mechanics, but as soon as I got barely decent at them the area was over. Again, small. As soon as I started getting the hang of something the game usually hit me with "Ok, time to move on!" This is only a problem because I liked the controls so much, and felt they could use (a lot) more obstacles to get their fullest use.
Particular Mushroom
Galaxy is a string of linier challenges put together. They aren't worlds, they're areas.
In Odyssey, it's one huge world that for the most part, you can move freely about from one objective to the next. While I agree Odyssey is easy, I do NOT think its lacks in grandiose, and I feel like what it offers beats out Galaxy. In Odyssey, you will, without a doubt, have a unique playthrough from someone else, while in Galaxy, it's all planned out, to the point where there is no freedom.
I feel like all the ideas pressent in Odyssey are just that. Ideas. Not mechanics.
GardeRay reminder that you get a power moon for kicking a rock the same action that normally gets a moon. And since you cannot collect extra moons from past worlds to progress the game in a world after like in a certain collectiton moons feel worthless.
Ok, most costume combinations are ugly, but Waluigi cap along with boxer shorts makes a perfect match.

i think you summed it up PERFECTLY, with the word "casual"
i feel the hole game is designed with casual tinted glasses, discovering areas collecting items.
theres a sort of cinematic omf! missing from most of the game, that was present since the start.
even the ending shows this, if you know what i mean.
some of it might be do to not exiting the area after collecting a shiny now,
which i know is better design, but it makes you feel like, more of a tourist, quickly seeing things once, then moving on.

I wouldn’t call your options for moons limitless as once you go to a new world moons in past worlds become worthless for progressing the story. So you cannot just collect all the collectibles in your favorite world and skip a world you don’t like entirely.
true, but the number of moons you need from each kingdom for story progression is relatively low and can be reached without spending all that much time there. advancing through the story and reaching the credits can actually happen very quickly, and it's only after that short sprint that the Real Game Begins and you can collect whichever moons you want from any kingdom

My apologizes. I really should have put that one in there. It's the coin stack. Randomly flying out of bushes, it really caught me off-guard and the sound effect is fantastic. And after several months it's more just a neat thing; it was mind-blowing at the time.
