  • Spend time with me as I fix my recipe clutter! I show you my recipe organization and my DIY recipe binder. Talk through aspirational recipe clutter and organize my recipes in a binder! I have one cabinet to hold recipes and cookbooks and I have set it as the boundary for this type of clutter. It's exceeded the cabinet and it's too messy to deal with one more day!

Missed you, Erica, but so glad you took time for you and your family (a great example for us all!). I once heard of a mom who had to be away from home a few days so her sister came to stay with the kids. When she returned, her children raved about their aunt's cooking, and when the mom asked what she had made, her sister said "I just looked through your cookbooks and fixed things that had splashes and drips on them - the things I knew you made often." 👍😉💕

Can you adjust the shelf so that the cookbooks fit vertically? Then you could put in one of those adjustable pot lid holders and get books in and out sooo easily. It would also tell you exactly how many books fit. 😊 Or book ends?

Someone made a comment of you still having too much stuff. I would like to remind the viewer that the amount of stuff Erica has is her choice. She can have zero cookbooks, 6 cookbooks or a 1000 cookbooks. Erica tends to be minimal in her belongings but it is her choice on how many things she gets to keep. I think you have done a fabulous job of reducing your possessions but what you keep and how much is your choice not to be determined by random CZcams watchers.

I am just here to say that walking me through the your recipe binder was a complete game changer for me. I too had a binder of mostly 'aspirational' recipes...no wonder I was a lousy cook. Since I've done that, the meals have been better, and I'm loving my kitchen again. Thank you for giving permission to toss recipes that you no longer like - or would never make. And I've decluttered a box of cookbooks.

Instead of sticky notes that say things like, “Too much cream cheese”, I recommend writing it right on the page. It will keep the book tidier, you will always want to have the tip, and even if/when you donate the book, the next person will likely appreciate the notes.

Aspirational clutter applies to so much of my "stuff", not just recipes. I keep healthy recipes that sound good because we are trying to choose foods that make us feel better, but if they are too complicated, I will never make them. I also keep too many decor items and craft items thinking I will use them but do less decorating and crafting all the time. I have donated a lot to our granddaughter and others but still "aspire" to do more than I ever will so this is a good reminder to declutter all areas. Thank you for your tips and inspiration!!

Due to other videos where you mentioned things were just not you, were just aspirational or not this season in your life-it has helped me lately. For example-I had a pair of high heels in my amazon cart for awhile and finally went and deleted because I knew they would be a waste of money, would just sit there and told myself this heel height is just not who I am (nothing like them in shorter heel height). I´m glad for the reminder to ditch the aspirational I´ve been hanging onto or what I know is just not feasible. I also need to go through my cookbooks.

I donated all my recipe books, because I realized I bought them, and never used them. I always end up using my own recipes for meals, but I did I catch myself this morning my husband and I are vegans, and Had heard Paul McCartney put his wife Linda’s vegan recipes made into a book. I had it on my wish list on Amazon for few weeks, but early this morning I deleted it, my fantasy self uses cookbooks, but the real Christine knows how to cook and has plenty of her own recipes, it would have never been used , what I would have done is thumb thru it, and make a recipe sort of like it, but not really following the cooking book.
I also have a folder on my iPad with recipes I always make, like this great lentil soup, and vegan cheese sauce etc.

If they are too time consuming, too many ingredients, or doesn't sound like something that me & my husband both would like, then I'm chunking it. I want to get me some clear plastic sleeves for my binders. I didn't think anyone else these days made binders like this but me. Now I'm excited to get it done. "Current" is from Current Catalog in Colorado. It used to be quite popular for cards (Christmas, etc.), kitchen paper (like recipe cards), stationary, and personal checks in particular. It branched out from there. I remember getting some special stationary with matching stickers (a wildlife type, strange that I can remember it!) when I was a teen. This was probably 45 years ago :) Though the company still exists, I haven't heard of it in years. The box you had is probably from your MIL :) It is probably vintage, like me. (my goodness, I haven't thought about all this for years! I remember holding on to this special stationary instead of using it. I'm working through that impulse, like you.)

I have 2 teenagers and with myself and my husband only the two of us like most of the meals. So frustrating! My son has braces so is picky on that side of things but it would be nice if I did not always hear complaints at meal time. I have tried to learn new recipes but still get shot down. Jenn, I made a lot of recipes from a once-a-month cookbook. My kids complained about some of them (like turkey noodle soup with sliced carrots; that was solved by shredding the carrots). So I made a list of the recipes and had them and my husband rate them from 1 to 5. Only the ones that averaged 4 and 5 made the cut.

Great declutter! Keep what works for you.
I did a recipe book decluttering in the summer. Now I have 4 recipe books. My main one from the 1970s (with everything), 2 small thin books on traditional recipes from where I am from/grew up, and 1 book which I write or stick recipes in that I have tried, loved and cook/bake regularly... All vertical in a kitchen draw.
I cook everything from scratch, but I do not need or use recipes books to meal plan.. I have 40 recipes my family love that I can cook from my head.. I have a shopping list of ingredients that covers all these recipes.. So I can cook any of them any day. Then I ask my family what they feel like from a few options on that day or I cook what I feel like cooking.. And some days you just don't feel like eating something and crave something else, so a set meals for each day wouldn't work. Also a set recipe per day doesn't work for me due to my schedule changing, and depending on how much energy I have for cooking or feel like eating. I do make sure I use ingredients up according to their "use by date" or how quick they would go bad (fridge food) because I have had a zero waste kitchen for over 6yrs now..and I love that nothing gets wasted!
Try and stack vertically.. It easier to pull them out and use them. Maybe in you binder have an "Andy" section so Andy can find the recipes he loves to cook easily!

When it comes to recipes I come across and want to try, I find that if I don’t plan to make it that week (or the next time I meal plan) it doesn’t get made! So if I can’t make the case to cook it that week or so, and get needed items on the grocery list, I don’t print it. If it isn’t great, it goes in recycling and not my recipe binder. It has cut down the amount of random recipes in my binder’s front pocket!

But somehow, it does not get printed, and then when i want it again it can never be found. Your idea is MUCH better.

11:39 I would take out all extra sleeves from the back. Leave 1 blank sleeve in each popular section or just leave like 5 in the back. If it takes multiple times of making and majority liking it to make it in the binder then the likelihood of needing all of those plastic sleeves right now is slim to none.

Just tossed the "fantasy me" recipes clogging up and rendering my binder useless. Been a silent to do list for too long! Hasn't served me. Ready to live in reality and curate meals there in. Progress 👍

I printed out the beef noodle skillet recipe a year ago and I literally made it last night lol. It's a family favorite- I make it at least once a month :)

Old recipe can be given to the food bank. They may want them? Just a thought, I put mine in a box
that goes to charity with pots, pans or bowls and utensils. Maybe someone might want them. Or recycle bin if no one wants them. Good job pairing down.

I plan to now declutter my Hello Fresh binder. I put all the recipes in it whether I made them or not. I think the idea is that I will make the recipe in the future. I do have some that I have made again, and I have notes on those that I have made. Time to trash the rest.
I also wrote down some crockpot ideas, so I don't have to do much cooking when I get home from work in the next few weeks.
Next week, I return 1/2 time to teaching and back to full time the week after. I have been out for three weeks recovering from surgery. It is times like during this recovery process that I really miss having my husband home instead of 6100 miles away. Unfortunately, or fortunately, he is not in the military. He teaches at Naserbyev University in the capital city of Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Not that Andy is looking for help with his "junk cabinets", but if he uses bins, be it clear or solid, it may be more useful... so it isn't a frustration of cascading crap... ask me how I know... Love your journeys... decluttering and health!

    That looks awesome!
This is a thing I struggle with, because of allergies and a pursuit of being healthier, I've changed our families diet a couple of times.
I use to cook a lot of Standard American Diet (SAD) foods... But then I had to start making my condiments from scratch for allergy reasons... Pretty soon, I make everything from scratch, even cream of chicken. So SAD became a recipe marathon.
I've curated my breakfast recipes, to avoid a lot of sugar... But my lunch and dinners... I have very few. And my kids don't like a lot of the newer recipes... And my husband needs a different balance than me - more veggies and less carbs. So I'm to the point where I feel like I have to make 3 separate meals for each mealtime. It's exhausting and discouraging.
Often we buy the kids foods I can't eat, because I'm struggling to cook at all now. There's a lot more food waste because with allergies, I can't eat what the kids don't finish; and my husband isn't losing weight when he's finishing off their plates. 😮‍💨
For a while, I was moving away from meat dishes (I already didn't cook them particularly often), but I don't think vegetarian is sustainable for me, and my husband freaked out when I told him I had been doing that... For months already... Suddenly he started buying and cooking meat into everything... 🤔😆 But I get sick from the "cheap meats" now... Sausage especially, so even meat is starting to feel complicated. Expensive.
So I just don't know what to do with my giant recipe piles. I feel like I need to try a ton of new recipes in order to find stuff ALL of us can or will eat.

If you stand them up it would be so much easier. If you can’t do it on that shelf use another cupboard. All those printed recipes looks very familiar. Good luck with your cookbook organization.

As others mentioned I would find a space to store my cookbooks vertically. Can you adjust the shelves? Find a space for household working books near a comfy space where you plan your days? Where one would store the planner, the flylady binder etc.?

I had SO many cookbooks! And I only used a few recipes per book. So I made my own cookbook w a 3ring binder. I typed out each recipe and included a variations section and a notes section on the bottom of each page. A lot of times my family will change a recipe slightly, and even that might change depending on who's cooking that meal. So I put each person's variations in and then just lines for notes for the next person making the recipe. I also included the origin of the recipe on top of the page, whether is was from a specific person or a specific cookbook. Yes, it was a lot of work, but know I only have 1 cookbook binder and it will be passed on to my daughter when she is old enough. it's on my computer, so I can make copies for any family member who wants it.

The chicken and the salsa in the crock pot is yummy. You can do it with your own salsa!! Some items just need to be added late in the game so they don't get gross. Maybe the corn. Give it a shot . You can also use left overs for tacos or make its specifically for tacos !
Ps make sure the salsa/salsa mix covers the chicken. It's done when you can shred the chicken with 2 forks. So tender

If I may make a suggestion for the future. With your aspirational recipes, the things that are time consuming, kids won’t eat but you want to try etc. perhaps have a single sheet of paper with only the names of the dishes and the website you found them on so if you ever decide to take on a challenge you know where to look

  • @rondap.328
    @rondap.328 Před 2 lety

Maybe have a section in the binder for the aspirational recipes...date it and check back in 6 months..if not used. Remove...if used.. move to permanent section

  • @MichellesCraftsandMore

I am a sucker for cookbooks. I am looking for old cookbooks from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. My husband had a thing about buying me cookbooks and I finally had to make him stop. I did donate or give away a ton of cookbooks, but I still have 3 shelves on a bookcase between the cookbooks and the recipe box and cards. I do use most of them, so I will be keeping them. There are still a few I can get rid of though.

Oh, oh! Could I be a cookbook hoarder? Looks like it when I compare my collection to yours 😂. Fortunately, I do limit the overall number to the amount of space I have allocated... but it’s a lot of space! Time to “edit” or “curate”? To be honest, most of the time I do no longer cook from cookbooks but look to the internet for inspiration - and then do my own thing, anyway 🤔. Yup, time to declutter!

I do this but I also use an app called Plan to Eat - it's pretty inexpensive, but it allows me to pull any recipe I find on line or on you tube into it - along with photos. From there, I cook the recipe I think we will like and either make it a keeper or delete it. Then once I have done all the tweaks I print it out and add it to my permanent binder.. I know its meant to be read on line , but when I am cooking I find it more peaceful to read from a paper page. Using this method, I have been able to eliminate all my cook books - if I need ideas I roam the internet and pull them into my program.

I had the hardest time letting go/deleting recipes on my Pinterest but once I did it didn't bother me like I thought it would. I remember deleting 2/3 of my pins on Pinterest. As for cookbooks I have a shelf I am limited to. I have Maybe one day I'll get ready to move on to zero cookbooks but as for now I am not buying anymore and I'm OK with what I have.
