One true Zimbo And yet, if all it took was Batman's death to move on, only to go right back into it as soon as he heard Batman was alive, then it only proves that he's relying too much on his death to have a good life, when he had a choice to not fight with batman anymore many other times before. I feel insanity does have its cons when you had all that time to just walk away and not come back, and not care about it anymore. But that never went through the Joker's mind. Batman came to be because Bruce lost someone important to him, and this whole thing with the Joker happened while Batman was still green at the time. Joker in his insanity ultimately chose to go back to that life. It seems he can't even live functionally without a crime fighter he knows running about. So what if Batman had something to do with the Joker's creation, he still had a choice then and now.

The doctor probably knew of Batman and she might have known he was Bruce Wayne but she played dumb due to his saving her before. Other than that it would have been just those kids who saw the tattered costume, but not necessarily the symbol and probably wouldn't recognize Bruce Wayne. Alfred wouldn't have reported Bruce missing and would've probably told people he was away for business or something so anybody else in Acordia probably wouldn't think the "guy in the strange costume" that looked like Bruce was really him and really Batman.

Personally, I think it would be cool to see Joker legitimately try to be Batman. Maybe sort of 'beat him at his own game' sort of thing. I'm thinking Batman disappears for whatever reason, and Joker is upset because he needs Batman. He waits, hoping one of the Robins or someone will pick up the cowl, but nobody does. Eventually, he decides he might as well do it himself. Who knows Batman better than the Joker? Then he does Batman things, all the while trying not to do Joker things. It's a weird idea that would take a lot to get off the ground, but it could be an interesting 'what if' story.

Here's a proposition... kill batman off in the comics. Let Joker become Joe Kerr again. This time though, make sure batman is actually dead. Let Joe live a normal life until one day he is too appalled by the terrible things he sees going on in gotham. With that he ends up becoming either another batman... or becomes a "good" incarnation of the joker who fights crime. I'm sure this may have happened, I wouldn't honestly know as I don't read the comics a lot but I want joe back... I don't know why.

the part I found rally interesting about this story wasn't just jokers brief encounter with sanity, but the fact that both joker and batman got the chance to break the cycle and lead a normal life for one, and yet in the end their obsession with each other pulled them back. It's actually kind of tragic in a way.
then again I always liked the batman stories that analyze the minds of certain characters. Mr. freeze trying to turn over a new leaf in batman beyond. mask of the phantasm where Bruce Wayne's ex fiance shows up and you get a peak at the happiness he could have had if he hadn't decided to pursue vengeance as well as a vengeful murdering vigilante who shows what batman could have become with out his code.
Also there was a really good two face side story from the no man's land arc where he wound up helping out at a clinic and and having a relationship with one of the doctors because his coin kept turning up heads. At the end a bunch couple junkies rob the place, and beat the hell out of the doctor. A furious two face beats the living shit out of them, and is about to flip a coin to dermine whether or not her should execute them, the dr. tries to convince him he doesn't need the coin anymore. He flips it anyways, claims it landed heads so the junkies live, and walks off. the last panal has him looking at the coin one last time to reveal it landed tails and he was lying his ass off..

Going sane is one of my fave batman stories. I love how they dont overexplain jokers mental condition but just show it as a natural part of the story. They also dont labor over his origins, unlike every writer out there ripping off the killing joke. But the absolute best bits are of joker leaving his fiance, both of them seemingly knowing exactly what hes doing as he lies that hell be back and she timidly waits in the dark forest. There was also a good parallel of bruce liking the quite village life with the pretty doctor. These characters were already icons but not as heavily self referential as the batman and joker of the early to mid 2000s. Lovely story.

The only reason he developed the Joseph Kerr personality was because after he thought Batman died Joker felt he had no purpose so he started a new life. And oh yeah Batman's really going to leave the evil psychopath who kills innocent people for a laugh alone isn't he "sarcasm."

Wyatt Iden An awesome theory at that.
There is a series where he does talk to the audience. Joker was one of my favourite characters for his complex nature and desire to be the opposite of Batman i saw from The Dark Knight is what drove me to comic books in the first place. However with this theory, it just adds a layer that places him at the top of my list.
He basically has a god complex, that is with reason, as he knows anything he does actually doesnt matter. All he does, its for entertainment factor, and helps boost the sales of the comics.
Hence why this video about him going sane, makes so much sense.

For the longest time i thought that I had imagined this one. I could only really remember the last few panels of batman looking over the lady. Going to have to pick this one up again. Now, Mr Comicstorian, could you tell me if another Batman story exists. It involves Zatanna and Joker...Joker cutting her throat and her writing her spells in her own blood. I know it sounds morbid...and I kinda hope I didn't imagine it lol.

Joker breaks the fourth wall. Because notice that when batman 'died' he became sane, and then went back insane when he returned? Well, maybe thats because batman cant die, hes the hero, so he stops believing that hes in a comic.

It should be noted this story is basically Kraven's Last Hunt. And I don't mean it in a bad way. It literally is. The writer (J.M. Dematteis) originally proposed the story as a Wonder Man story. After that failed he proposed it as a Batman story. It was originally rejected for being too similar to The Killing Joke. Then he reworked it as a Spider-Man story. And it was published. Then he also managed to publish the Batman story. And that is why "Going Sane" and "Kraven's Last Hunt" are the same story.

It would've been better for Rebecca if joker had killed her because mental pain is much worse than physical pain which is shown when Batmans parents die. Also if you are cut or shot even you can still heal and get better but when a family member or somebody close dies the pain stays longer and you would suffer longer.

I think their should be a series like the Batman who Laughs, a Joker who Helps
Batman “dies”, or dies, in a fight and Joker gets into a slump. Makes a new identity and becomes a detective, like a better detective than Batman could be due to Jokers more unhinged criminal mind
Meanwhile the remaining Bat Family keeps an eye on him to see if he is or isn’t reformed

Nathanael Baldelomar I think sadly joker has the same issue bane does, but at a much worse level. Even with batman gone his brain will always think he's not so his joker sides would constantly try and get out till eventually they do in the worse way. Luckily that didn't happen. But I do wonder how this story would be now if it was retold.

It was an odd tale to me. I think it's been said that if Batman ever did die, then Joker would "retire" but in this story "Joseph" keeps experiencing these weird Joker trances. Can these two just sense that the other is still alive or can neither one really and truly change for the better?
