- Volkswagen Lupo GTI - Bitesize Performance! [Throwback Review]
Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome to another Throwback Review, the series in which I test cars from yesteryear. This time around it's a small but perfectly formed pocket rocket that shares a very similar ethos to the Volkswagen Up! GTI. It's the Volkswagen Lupo GTI, which like the Up!, is compact, light and packs a bit of a punch.
Unlike the Up! GTI, the Lupo GTI makes use of a naturally aspirated 1.6 four-cylinder petrol, whereas the Up! is a 1.0 turbocharged three cylinder petrol. The Lupo offers more power, but less torque. Speaking of which, the Lupo offers 125hp along with 152Nm of torque. This power is fed to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual - later versions had a 6-seed instead.
0-62 is done in 8.2 seconds, which may seem a bit pedestrian, but certainly feels nippy enough when you're driving the car. The top speed in case you're wondering is 127mph.
A massive thank you to fellow CZcamsr @Auto Social UK for letting me borrow her cherished Lupo for a few hours, and a another massive thank you to @PocketRockets to assisting with the filming - be sure to check them both out!

Sorry for the late upload, it's been a problematic/tiring/challenging weekend and I was half asleep when uploaded so I forget to schedule the upload!
Bloody love these. Had an '05 1.4 lupo as my first car and, whilst it was down on power at only 75bhp, it's nice how many parallels there are to the GTI in terms of it still sounding and feeling 'meaty'. The body roll was spectacular and I also had issues with the driving position, but the quality was brilliant and was otherwise happy to take it on 5/600 mile round trips! Its a car I'd have held onto if I could have afforded to as it was my grandads and then my parents for 10 years
I’ve got a 2001 lupo gti, I’m 6,4 and I perfectly fit in the car, it’s not always as comfortable but it fits
👍🏽
Love this Wolf for Lupo is Wolf. Best car ever made especially for these high cost petrol price times.
There should be a 'BTS' video showing everyone how some of these shots were made 😂
Great video mate!
🤣
I've always loved small fun cars like these but always needed something more practical. Ibiza mk4 5 door was the smallest car ive owned
Great content mate! 👍 I should hopefully pick up my Lupo GTI (6 Speed) next weekend! Really looking forward to it!
Hi David, I'm glad you liked the video - I hope you enjoy the new purchase! Thanks for watching.
I love the volkswagen lupo!!!
The Lupo Gti is like a miniature Mk5 R32……it has all the characteristics, xenon’s, twin centre exhaust and it’s exactly half the power
Great little cars, i have owned my 2001 5 speed lupo Gti for 8 years now as a runaround car and it’s been a great, it’s been used for everything, from mega road trips or just popping to the shops
Don’t think i Would ever part with it despite having far more exotic cars in the stable
Had a rare Raven Blue 6 speeder for a while.Fantastic build quality, top standard Xenon headlights.Loved to rev out to the red line.Even had the original tyre sealant/compressor in the boot, where the battery also resides.
Only thing i didn't like was the really high bite point of the clutch. But maybe it was on it's way out.
Highly recommend one.Just watch out for being tailgated/bullied by boy racers. When they tailgate you they look like they're sitting in the back seat!.
Hi Aaron, good review. Was wondering if this is more fun than the non-hybrid turbo Suzuki Swift Sport you've driven?
Good question Shahzad. I'd say the Lupo, as it's a bit retro and it has more character. Thanks for watching.
My five speed has AC, but it is broken 😅👍 It is a fantastic car, btw. We want to keep it for our son. Three more years until he can do his drivers licence 😊👌
Hi there, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
Gti are 6 speed
Hi Dale, thanks for watching. Early models were a 5 speed manual.
@@DaleSteel So, you thougt I was lying about MY Lupo? 🤣👍 Doubt grows with knowledge 🧐
@@CarObsession Thanks for answering 😘 I was actually watching a video about the Kruger Dunning effect, when I recognized his message. That's so funny 😅
Come to think of it this only had 25bhp less than the golf gti of its generation which was much bigger and heavier
I hadn't even thought of that 🤔. Thanks for watching.
I'd have a Panda 100HP over one of these. The Panda is a riot.
I'd like to drive one of those, I bet they're good fun!
😂
I’d rather have AIDS than a Fiat panda
Not similar in build quality lol . Wolfsburg built or no thanks.
