- Fulfilling its mission to preserve and perpetuate the art of hula, each year the Merrie Monarch Festival provides a stage for the world’s finest hula hālau (schools) in order to showcase Hawaiʻi’s unique cultural art of hula.
Here are highlights of the 4 top finishers in the 2013 Hula Kahiko (ancient), Kāne (male) Division.
1st Place: Kawailiʻulā
Kumu Hula: Chinky Māhoe
“O Kīlauea Noho Lulu”
In Kīlauea, Pele’s deep sleep is disturbed and she is lured from her home by the haunting drum beat of a dance performance at Hāʻena, Kauaʻi. She travels from island to island, drawn by the sound of Lohiau’s drumming.
Appearing as a beautiful woman adorned with forest greenery, Pele approaches Lohiau and they soon become lovers.
2nd Place: Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi
Nā Kumu Hula: ʻIliahi & Haunani Paredes
“Mālie ʻO Maui”
The dancers offer “Mālie ʻO Maui,” an athletic and bombastic hula from the repertoire of the late Kumu Hula O’Brian Eselu. Kumu ʻIliahi performed this mele at the Merrie Monarch Festival over 20 years ago.
It begins with a Maui adage, “When Maui is calm, Kaihuakalā Hill can easily be seen.” Many say that Hāna is not experienced unless one has set eyes on Kaihuakalā.
3rd Place: Ke Kai O Kahiki
Kumu Hula: Laʻakea Perry
“Kauō Pū Ka ʻIwa Kala Paheʻe”
The islands of Kaula and Lehua are featured in this mele hula. Storm winds and rains sweep the cliffs and wreak havoc with the flight of the ʻiwa bird. Amid the fierce elements, there is love that stirs in the prince and princess while they sleep.
4th Place: Hālau Hula ʻO Kahikilaulani
Kumu Hula: Nāhōkūokalani Gaspang
“Nā Nalu O Hawaiʻi”
Many famous surf spots along the coast of Hawaiʻi are named in this mele. It was said that in ancient times, entire villages left their homes and work when the call “Ua piʻi mai ka nalu!” or “Surf’s up!” was heard.
Villagers arrived at the shore and surfers would encourage great swells to roll in by saying, “Kū mai, kū mai ka nalu - The surf looms forth.”

This traditional dancing is beautiful. There’s something fun about the body also being a percussive instrument when dancing
Imagine an island full of what was considered as the fiercest warriors of their time are also the best dancers.
❤ The women screaming for these handsome, dancing men. I can understand. Beautiful presentation.
These men are wonderful souls, and proud warriors….the energy and spirit shown here is just…BOOM!!!
Magnificent. Great to see the younger generation keeping up traditions and culture.
Unfortunately it was The Americans who destroyed Hawaii. Dismissed Queen and Royal family and the True Government of Hawaii...
Polynesian and Native Indian people are God's gift to the world. Beautiful culture and traditional dances. ❤️
Then it's the Dravidian
@@ruh96said nobody ever
I wish the people who came after learned from them. Important lessons to be learned.
There is a similar dance form in Kalahandi district of Odisha..where they tie drum near to chest..
Funny how everything derived from what is now labeled as Africa yet no one wants to admit it.
The timing and precision in this dance is just ridiculous! I could watch this over and over and over. Thank you for sharing.💚

no matter how many times i watch this vid, i think of the many blessings of this strong and BEAUTIFUL CULTURE..... EVERY GESTURE & LYRIC IS POWERFUL...TRULY POETRY IN MOTION! 🙏💖🥰
The precision and energy is so wonderful to watch
Great precision and timing. Could watch for a great length of time
Now that's art, it's enough to hypnotize ❤😊
As a side thought… I hope Maui, and the Lahaina area, is healing after that devastating fire. Such a beautiful island. I’d love to visit again.
I wish it would translate the story these beautiful dances are telling to allow us to appreciate them more.
Agreed
The description has a brief summary for each one
Nice to see these young men keeping up cultural dances 👏👏🥰
OMG the strength in the legs! Some of those men are absolutely beautiful too.
I am here because I read a BBC article on King David La'amea Kalākaua. These is a fascinating tradition. I've never seen men dancing the traditional Hawaiian dances before.
They’re so frigging manly ❤
My Greenlandic indigenous hearts is LOVING this!!! 🇬🇱 In my home country we don’t teach our young our traditions anymore.. but I hope your passion for your traditions, can inspire and revive other forgotten indigenous dance and music 🎵 ❤
It's great to see physically fit men displaying their manly pride in dance. This is a great inspiration to the many conquered indigenous peoples of the world who have had their culture taken from them, who then can fall prey to alcohol and drugs. Good for you! Keep it up! Bring it back!
To colonisation in the first instance.
@davechristenssen whatever...Wow, thanks for the pat on the head white man!🤗
Wow what an intensely patronizing comment. In just a few lines you know the guy is white, sexist, has a toxic masculine attitude, and racist. Yes blame the indigenous people for drugs and alcoholism instead of what your people did to them.
Absolutely... wonderful performance.❤
That was your take away from this? Yes, overlook them proudly participating in and preserving their culture and heritage and instead focus on their bodies and make a blanket statement on most indigenous people being alcoholics and addicts.
J'adore les danses traditionnelles et découvre le Hula. C'est magnifique !
It is amazing that every movement of their hands tells a story.
So amazing! I love traditional dances! And I admire the people that do them! It's such a dedication and honestly I kept thinking my legs would be so sore I don't think I could ever do it... It really does take a lot of muscle and endurance
What a beautiful culture that I hope continues to thrive and be enjoyed around the world. ❤
I can watch this all day
The music and dance blend together so seamlessly! They don't just dance to music - they become the music, making the dance itself musical. It's so amazing to watch how much intention goes into each movement
OMG! The strength those men have is amazing!
It is nice to see men dancing and showing how athletic dancing is. Dancing is not for the weak and faint of heart.
Gosh this is like a hundred times better than those korean boy group.. 😍
The performance is absolutely beautiful 👏👏👏👏🫡
I loved watching Merrie Monarch every year when I lived there. I miss it.
Major props to ya'll cause my knees could NEVER
😂 same because I’m overweight
I think I like this side of youtube 😮
Боги! Это так завораживает
Their Ancestors must be so proud of them for preserving & respecting their cultural mores & folkways, so rich, well done! ☮💚🥳🥳🥳💫💫
I still tear up at seeing indigenous cultures like this. It’s beautiful how they are motivated to keep their cultures alive through these events. God bless Hawaii’s people and all Indigenous communities. ❤
Beautiful all of these dances are so unique
Each dance is created around the Mele, the vocal story heard.
Their dance is so captivating 😮
Beautiful culture..and beautiful gorgeous looking men.
I wish they would subtitle the " story" of the dance. I'm loving this .
that leg tattoo on one of the guys in the third group... it looks insane! like he has a permanent leg/hip armor ready for battle!
That’s a Samoan Pe’a, he mostly likely is of both Samoan and Hawaiian decent. Contrary to most assumptions the tattoo is not a warrior tattoo, but rather the tattoo of the servant as it represents one’s willingness to be a leader of their people.
@@mctulkyviperbit6166 thanks for the explanation. I knew it had to have some kind of cultural significance but since I know nothing about their traditions I had no idea where to find the info about it. Such a beautiful culture.
Молодцы.Синхронность исполнения бесподобна .
Да
amazing, wonderful, beautiful, no words for describe, love it!!!!
I love the merrie monarch festival.
Beautiful culture would love to see in person 💕💕
Beautifull dance, armony, stile, and perfection.
How many times did you re-watch this? Yes.
i pray that i meet a man whose a warrior and a soldier my heart is filled with aspersions of love and peace 🕊️
Girl same lol
I've had warrior and soldiers. If you want peace, avoid them. They'll search for conflict, peace is stressing for them.
Aim to meet someone like those dancers, filled with passion, dedication, patience and poetry !
Amen to that 😂
@@bitchette periodt
Saw this on IG today, can't help myself from watching the longer version😂😅
All of the dancing in this video was amazing to watch. But I have to say, I think I loved the 3rd group just a bit more. Their dancing was smooth and powerful.

Amazing. Next you gotta see Hawaiian hula Kahiko!
Magnificent!❤❤
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love the fabrics that they wear and how they strap on the drums to their knees while they dance. I really wish our men would be more open minded to these ancient traditions. Unfortunately a lot of them fear being labeled as “gay” or “weak.” 😭
This is so cool!!! ❤
