I haven't been to a Pizza Hut like that since 2002. It bums me out that Pizza Hut doesn't have their old iconic look anymore. All restaurants are starting to look homogenized now.

Pizza Hut in the 80s/90s was the shit. Something about the _vibe_ of the place...
Those transparent red textured cups, the exposed brick, the Pac-Man arcade, the overall low lighting, the Tiffany style lights, the waxy wood tables, the hologram Book It pins. Not to mention the genuinely excellent pizza...that signature thick crispy almost fried crust with thick cheese in those heavy black cast iron personal pans....sprinkled generously of course with that cheap grated parmesan cheese.
The entire a e s t h e t i c of 90s Pizza Hut will always live in a very special part of my mind... To this day I honestly sometimes have dreams that take place in environments that are similar in an uncanny way....

Unless you're our age, no one quite gets why there's a great nostalgia for 1980s Pizza Hut. Because Pizza Hut was sit-down, this is a place you went for a special or semi-special occasion. You'd go in and wait to be seated. They were dark inside. And in their most Golden of Golden Ages around 1980-1985, the juke boxes were playing music from Huey Lewis and the News, Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, Men at Work,. John Cougar. And then when everyone finally agreed on what kind of pizza you were going to order---because no family could ever easily agree on either Thin n Crispy or Pan Pizza, you could enjoy your Pepsis in their red glasses and the pitcher they'd bring. Maybe dad ordered a beer, becuase this wasn'a pizza shop. It was Pizza Hut. And then while you were waiting for your food to come, you'd go over and play Pac Man if it was available. And then when it came to the table, you had that great music, the red and white tablecloths, the overhead lights, the candles on the table, and then the waitress would serve everyone their first slice from that piping hot pan. And that smell (Really? Fairy Dust?) All of your senses were experiencing something great, and because this is a place where you went as a step up from a pizza shop, our memories of 1980s Pizza Huts are very special to us. And, oh yeah, at the end of the meal after you paid the bill, they gave you little peppermit disk candies.
Somewhere in the 90s Pizza Hut became more about something else that I can't pinpoint. But the quality started to go downhill around then too. Only recently (since COVID-19) does their Pan Pizza actually resemble the taste of 1980s food. But Googling PIzza Hut in the 80s, I stumbled across a somewhat sarcastic article about nostalgia for 1980s PIzza Hut. Unless you lived it, you just won't get it. I'm glad you guys get it and can help share the magic of these memories.

Wow, thanks Rick!! We loved reading your nostalgic description of Pizza Hut in the 80's, and we share many of those same memories! I distinctly recall listening to the juke box, and my friends and I got so excited to discover new songs. I remember selecting "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" by The Police because we thought that name was the funniest thing ever. It turned out to be an awesome song, and I still love it!

WOW. I occasionally pick up pizzas for my teen from there & always think about how sad & empty it is now, how great the salad bar was & how great the BOOK IT program was (it's amazing how getting that free personal pizza & button could motivate a kid, but it worked, in our school anyway). That's as far as my mind can go before my order is up. So reading this was GREAT and took me right back. Thank you!!!

Back when Pizza Hut made good pizza. The thing that I remember strongest beyond the visual aesthetic, was that fresh pizza smell that would hit you when you walked in. There's nothing else like it. I remember birthday parties there too. Or doing the book club thing of read so many books to get a free personal pan pizza. They were placed to be then. I can remember calling a pizza order in, going to my local video store, renting VHS tapes, picking up the pizza, and going home to watch movies and eat pizza. Those were the days.

I kinda like how fast food buildings are mostly aluminum with glass. Makes it easier to see the view outside while it's warm inside, plus I love the wooden floor that goes well with the aesthetic. The problem is it's more designed to call them up and takeaway nowadays. Not many pizza joints are dine in anymore

This literally brought a tear to my eye. The green carpet, the checkered table cloths, the lamp shades... Just so many good growing up memories. My dad wasn't always around, one of the best childhood memories, was when my family and I would go eat at pizza hut on Sundays after church and then hit up the movie theater. Such happy times. This Internet/delivery world we live in is "convenient" but it's definitely taking away from all the get together places. Like malls, movie theaters and restaurants. Where family and friends could get together and just enjoy being out of the house. Looks like the only thing thriving these days are bars. 😕

They didn't adapt quickly enough to the consumers massive demand for delivery options in place of sit down restaurants. Their older sit-down family meal style locations got fewer and fewer visits and all the customers just started ordering, from which Domino's was cheaper and faster, and they also changed their whole pizza profile so it started to taste better according to most consumers too.. whereas Pizza Hut just didn't transition in the same way very well. I miss it badly. I don't want our culture to move toward more isolation, which delivery and social media have contributed a lot, and will continue sky rocketing until we all live in our own cubicles on life support.

    • @shaun8062
      @shaun8062 Pƙed 2 lety +1

@John Wu I would say that it isn't your nostalgia clouding your opinion. I think people look at nostalgia in such a negative way sometimes when they are totally missing the picture. You wouldn't have nostalgia for something that wasn't good in the first place. Now maybe compared to today's standards it would not be quite as good comparatively, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good or that it wouldn't still be good today. Just because there is better, doesn't mean you were wrong. And a lot of people think nostalgia is unhealthy. If it were unhealthy to our survival and well-being, it wouldn't be a trait that evolved this far. There's a reason we remember things fondly the way we do, and it's ok to look into those moments, even to relive them a little here and there. What people are afraid of, is "looking lame". They don't want to feel like they've peaked in life and become that old person saying, "back in my day...". But I disagree with them. Just don't be bitter about it and keep growing, and the nostalgia won't hurt you.

I was first introduced to Pizza Hut in 1969 as a six year old child. I thought it was a very unique restaurant, the brick interior walls, the trapezoidal windows, and most striking to me, the Early American mate's chairs. The thing that was so striking to me about the mate's chairs was the guitar shaped solid wood seat. I wondered which came first, the guitar or the mate's chair. There were two periods when they had the mate's chairs. They had them when I was first introduced to Pizza Hut in 1969, and then in 1973, they changed them out for those stupid cafe style bentwood chairs, with the rimmed cane seats. But in 1976, they went back to the mate's chairs. They had them until 1984 when they went to those stupid bentwood chairs again. The guitar shaped seat was one thing that was striking to me about the mate's chairs, but my first student desk, which came unfinished came with a mate's chair. Over the years, I did a lot of artwork and homework in that mate's chair and had lots of interesting people sit in it. In high school, I refinished that chair to match a new Eathen Allen desk. I now have a bass guitar that has a mate's chair seat for the body, which came from a sadly mutilated mate's chair found at a curbside put out for trash pickup.
Also when I was introduced to Pizza Hut, I fondly remember the Wurlitzer Americana juke box, which I first heard many of my all time favorite rock classics on, CCR "Proudmary", Shocking Blue "Venus", the Beatles "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" the Rolling Stones "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Honkytonk Woman", and most fondly, the Rolling Stones "Shaddered". Sitin' up there in that old mate's chair, I laughed my socks off at the way Mick Jagger sang "Laughter joy and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex and look at me! I'm in tadders! Uh Shadoobie!' I'm shaddered!" Today my friends and I have a hip lingo that comes from that song. We first made it up when I was in 8th grade. "Shaddered", means chilling and having a good day. If you're shaddered, and somebody asks you, "Are you shaddered?", you say "Shadoobie!" That mean's "Yeah I'm shaddered".
I was hoping for a third period for the mate's chairs, but it never happened. I made up an elaborate fantasy about Christine, Stephen King's demonic '57 Plymouth Fury, being the one to bring back the mate's chairs for the second period. Filled with a car load of mate's chairs, and her radio blaring out the "Falling Pebbles" 1968 hit, "I Wanna See Her Sit'n My Mate's Chair", she pulls her starboard side up to the customer entrance in the wee hours of the morning. She opens her starboard door, and you can hear her radio blasting. She uses her supernatural powers to unlock and open the Pizza Hut door. Inside, the bentwood chairs scoot out from under the tables all at once. The mate's chairs drift in mid air, out of Christine and into the dining room, placing under the tables. Christine then extracts the bentwood chairs in the same fashion, piling them into her. She then lets go of the door and relocks it, closes her starboard door and puts her wheel hard a starboard. She turns around, pulls out, and heads for the next location. On the way to the next location, she uses her reversal odometer snd supernatural powers to transform the bentwood chairs into mate's chairs, piece by piece. She repeats the same process at the next location.

Oooh my god!!! You are now officially my favorite CZcamsr!!! I am a vintage Pizza Hut fanatic!! I am obsessed with Pizza Hut!!! You’re gonna think I’m a total nut case when you hear my story. On my 38th birthday, I made my parents take me to an old Pizza Hut that hadn’t been remodeled and still looked like it did in the 80’s, that was 45 minutes minutes from their house and 2 hours away from my house! I called the restaurant first and asked them if they had remodeled the place in any way. Hahaha. I went out and bought red and white checkered table cloths and a plastic red coke glass! I brought them with me to that Pizza Hut. I also brought my Pizza Hut Barbie and Pizza Hut ken dolls with me! I posed for pictures with my Pizza Hut barbies inside and outside the restaurant. And...the manager loved my Pizza Hut barbies and wanted to buy them from me! He also asked me to take a picture of him holding one of them! Needless to say, I didn’t sell my p.h. Barbie! Ahaha I have vintage Pizza Hut magnets. I have vintage Pizza Hut coolers. I saved the boxes from my latest pizzas and cut out the retro logo and hung them on my wall in my bedroom. I looove the old 80’s style Pizza Hut. In fact, I sent several emails to their corporate offices asking them to bring back the old logo and the table clothes. I never got a response, but I just saw a commercial recently that had the old logo and the red and white checked table cloth!!! I like to think that maybe, just maybe I was responsible for them bringing back their old logo.

That red roof design is actually from the 1970s. Here in suburban New Orleans, all our original Pizza Huts closed many years ago but a few of the buildings remain and other restaurants moved in - and still have that very noticeable roof. I loved the original Pizza Hut pizza - I don’t like it today, they changed the recipe... There are small Pizza Hut places here again (but in strip malls), and the pizza just isn’t as good as it used to be. I think they tried too hard to compete with other chains and they wound up with a product that, if you bring one home in your car, then your car smells like smelly shoes for a few days.
But I love the old pizza huts! This is amazing, I feel like I just took a trip back in time there... thank you!

Thanks for stopping by our channel and sharing your memories Barry! On a recent trip to Texas, we were encouraged to see a couple of older, small-town Pizza Huts with signs that read "Pizza Hut Classic." We looked into it and realized that Pizza Hut is actually rebranding some of their old red roof restaurants with the classic features we love, yay! There are only a few of these concept stores open so far. We will try to visit one soon and make a video about it... fingers crossed their pizza will be as tasty as we remember, but at least the old-school design might be coming back!

You are correct. I worked at a new one that was built in Slidell in 1977. I also worked at Chef hwy, Downman rd, Gentilly blvd, Bullard rd, Covington, and a few others. :)

I live in San Antonio Texas and about 5 miles from my house they still have one of these 80's/90's style pizza hut's with the red roof, wooden walls, checkered tables and chandeliers over tables...I actually went in today and ordered some pizza Togo for mother's day (my wife was craving it) lol... anyways, great video! Love nostalgia myself

Did y’all happen to find any recipes I’d love to buy if you have one for white sauce. Sounds crazy I know but I’m obsessed with finding the recipe for their old white sauce because I don’t like their new white sauce.

Those were the days. We don't have too many Pizza Huts here anymore but the ones that are here sure don't look like they used to.

Same here. Ours have pretty much all converted to pick-up/delivery only little shops in strip malls. It's an unfortunate trend. Thanks for stopping by our channel Barry!
