IMPORTANT UPDATE (Overheating issues) - OCTOBER 2014
I've received a number of reports from people who live in hotter countries that have experienced overheating and failures with the 0803. Due to the short time that I test any one camera, and the lower temperature where I live, I didn't have any issues myself but I would now recommend you avoid the 0803 if you live in a hot country.

After a couple of hot months in my car in direct sun light ( 95F ) the only issue I have had is the power button on one of my units wont work anymore so I cant interact with the menu unless its plugged in. Both still work and don't feel hot to touch when in use.

      What are the symptoms?
I've had an issue with mine but didn't know if it was just a glitch, user error, or now that I've read this- maybe a symptom caused by heat.

Just in case anyone has turned off the annotations. The blocking that is visible in the trees section of the video is an artefact created during the youtube re-encoding process and isn't visible on the original clips - which are downloadable from my website goo.gl/QYMmSW (the file name of this particular clip is Trees).

    • @JoeGP
      @JoeGP Před 10 lety +1

that's not completely true though, it's the result of the low bit-rate, re-encoding anything always makes it worse but if the camera was shooting in 30MBps or even 20MBps (in 1080p) there would be less or no artifacts.
Also if anyone wants to upload the videos shot with it to youtube they will also always get that blocking so it matters.
Also now you can upload higher then 1080p video to youtube, maybe upload a 1290p sample to youtube, it might not get so much blocking. Just a thought.

The electrical noise in the audio is most likely caused by the 5v usb supply. I had the same problem on my dashcam until I used a different supply..

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  Před 10 lety

Joe G.P. iMovie only outputs 1080p (at a bitrate of 18.53 Mbit/s) - so it's this or nothing.

I just bought one of these for my car. I used your review of the original mini 0801 to make the purchase for my new truck in December. 6 months later, my new truck was rear ended. it has been a nightmare getting it fixed, dealing with the insurance companies and body shops (yes, plural...) but the video is invaluable, even though it didn't capture and the actual collision. The camera performed its duty perfectly, Thank you Techmoan!

I've been using this model for over 6 months and I DO NOT recommend you buy one.
My first one kept randomly turning off and on and the replacement was ok for a few weeks and then started doing the same thing. Even with different SD cards and mains power supplies it keeps turning off. Also when you press the save button you must press it twice. The first press turns the screen on (if its set to turn off) and the second press saves the minute before, during and after the button was pressed. BUT it does not change the filename it changes the file attributes which has to be added to windows explorer by right clicking on the columns, choosing More.. and check the Attributes box. Then you'll find all the saved clips with the attributes RA (some of my saved clips didn't save).
Might invest in a Garmin 10 instead...

I just wanted to say thanks to Techmoan. I purchased the Mini 0803 after many reviews and forum browsing and it has been working flawlessly. Thank you for your videos. I have been following since you reviewed the 0801. After seeing this review I used your eBay link and bought one for each vehicle. I just finished installing the last of the three last night. I hardwired them into the vehicles' wiring under the dash for a stealthy install. My only gripe thus far is the G-sensor sensitivity, we have a lot of speed bumps in South Africa and at 3.5G it retains almost all of them, got it at 4.5G now, I'll go see later if it's better. Thanks again.

What is the voltage and amp output of the charger that comes with this? I ask because I could connect up the USB lead from my Parrot Asteroid Smart, this means when the car is started, the head unit comes on, the USB port gets power and the DVR starts recording.

    1) Is there any significant difference if I used a higher speed/class microsd card in terms of the video recording and playback?

Are there any camera similar to this which uses a G-sensor to turn on and off? Because I bought on from a local automotive store, but I haven't come across one online. The one I have needs a constant power supply even when the car is off. And it comes on via a g sensor automatically, this also means it will record if there is impact with the car whilst parked.

AE Meter mode switched to spot could be the solution for you not to film the hood of the car as Automatic Exposure would then evaluate the correct exposure from a spot not the whole center part of the image so there would be no hood-filming-cheat needed ...

If you turn the GPS off will it still get the proper time from the satellites? Some of this stuff is really bad about keeping time so after a couple weeks the time it displays on the video clips is way off. I don't really want the GPS data but if it would keep the time right with GPS turned off it might be worth getting it.

By the way I downloaded the motorway clip and played it back through Registrator Viewer, it is great that you get to see all the features from speed, direction and how far you have travelled.

I'm imagining a setup where the camera is hidden and control box and SD card are kept at another location (console, glovebox). Maybe even have a second camera (or more) connected to the same control box. Like a home security system but in a car. Is there an integrated "dash" cam system on the market?

Hi, great dash cam reviews, but one thing is not clear, would I have to set the time and date every time I set off on a journey or do most dash cams have memory?

Techmoan, I need your advice! Can you recommend a stand alone windscreen mount for the mini 803; as i am using the camera or trying to, in to vehicles. 1 being the works vehicle and 2, my private car.
    Many Thanks.

I bought 720p dash cam, the power lead has three wires, red, black and white. I didn't get any instructions on how to connect to power and i searched all your videos and I didn't come accross to any camera with three wires, please advise me as if i connect incorrectly either it will not record or when the sd card is full, is not re-recording. Thanks

Have you ever had any issues with the mini 803 (or others) malfunctioning after the car has sat in the sun for an extended period of time and the car’s interior has gotten very hot? My dash cam manual says its working temp is 0 to 65C. It malfunctioned once and I’m fairly sure it was temperature related. I live in California and it can get in the triple digits here in the summer. I hate having to wait until my dash cam cools down before turning it on. Defeats the whole purpose of having one in the first place if you can’t use it right from the start.

I have a question if I may, is there an option for a capacitor versus battery for this dashcam? I live In a very hot environment and I understand that capacitors offer increased longevity.....

Excellent review, thank you. I agree that the mount on the dashcam is very noticeable from the outside. Can we use this dashcam with a different mount, one that is more inconspicuous?

what do you do if an event occurs and you want to make sure you save that incident and not have it looped over, if you still continue to drive on for a while?

    Hi.
I have the E Prance 0803 cam and in general I'm more than happy with it, and feel somewhat "safer" with it installed in case anything happens with someone pulling out in front of me etc.
But, over the last few days the cam has started acting up in that it will make the powering off sound as I'm driving along, and will sometimes act differently from the usual alternating red and blue led sequence as it's recording to just a steady red or blue.
I have no idea why it's doing this, and I'm here in the UK too.
Could a firmware update sort this out do you think? It's typical that it's just out of warranty god damn it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought one of these cameras recently and at first it worked fine. But after a couple of days it started to make an annoying bleeping noise and a message would appear on the screen saying "Frontal Vehicle"? The only way I found to stop this was to press the default settings button. It fixed the problem but now I can't view any files I've recorded. Instead all I get is sound!!
    Any ideas please?

Are the mounting units - the bits with the adhesive pads - interchangeable? IOW can I unplug the 0801 from my car and plug in an 0803?

    Hi Techmoan, great videos!
I'm wondering whether you would mind telling me, between the mini 0803 and the "wedge" A118/B40, which would you recommend?
