- Life is full of surprises... and here's another Cut & Thrust surprise mix! Hope you enjoy this full version of the theme music (and song) from Cilla Black's Surprise Surprise TV show.
Cilla Black hosted ‘Surprise Surprise’ on ITV in the UK from 1984 to 2001. Produced by LWT (London Weekend Television), this hugely popular show involved surprising members of the public with long-held wishes, making surprise calls (on the phone and in person) and reuniting guests with long-lost loved ones. As the show grew and developed, it focused more on family reunions which was guaranteed to have a nation of TV viewers crying their eyes out.
Cilla was perfect for this kind of show as she had a way of connecting with members of the public which meant they immediately warmed to her. Her cheeky Scouse (Liverpool) accent would often be impersonated and her phrases are still part of British culture today.
Having been a chart-topping recording artist in the 1960s, Cilla would open and close each show by singing the theme song and there were two different songs that she sang during her time as host. The first theme song was ‘Surprise Surprise’ (1984-1991 Series 1-8) which I’ve already remixed here • Cilla Black - Surprise... .
This mix is the second theme song called ‘Life Is Full Of Surprises’ (1992-1997 Series 9-14 & used in specials until the show’s conclusion in 2001). While the first version ('Surprise Surprise') was released as a single, this version only exists in short pieces as part of the opening and closing of the show and so I had to create a full-length song using slightly different versions from different seasons. I’ve also thrown in a section which includes some of Cilla’s quotes. While I was looking through footage to find these quotes, I was very quickly caught up in the show and one particular episode had me in tears!
I can’t seem to find who the composer is of this version but the Musical Director is Ray Monk and the Musical Associate is Trevor Brown so perhaps the song-writing credit belongs to one (or both) of them?

This was a Ray Monk 'produced and arranged' track for sure. He was hot off Aspel and Company's super 80s arrangement and was LWT's go to composer around this time for live shows after Alan Ainsworth hung up his baton but I'm pretty sure Ainsworth actually might of composed this as the key changes and orchestrations are very similar in style to his Cannon and Ball theme and Ray Monk was his number two in that era.
Sadly Alyn Ainsworth died in late October 1990, just after conducting his last UK Eurovision entry the previous May in Zagreb, so is unlikely to have been involved in this.

Anyway, that 2nd version of the theme song is such a bop. I mean, I love to hear that song over and over again, 2nd is the best over the 1st. Nice job, dude. 😊

I believe the composer Ray Monk is notorious for not being forthcoming with sharing his works for commercial release or even putting them online.
