Best Sandpaper Grit for Car Painting - 400, 600, 800 Grit?

  • Personally, I like to stay in the range of 320-360 which is a good grit to paint over. In this range, it’s completely safe to go painting single stage enamel. The reason is because enamels, acrylic enamels, synthetic enamels in general are thicker and they fill the tooth of the sandpaper a lot easier.
    While on the other hand, with base coat and clear coat, you will have to sand a little bit more.
    I hear of some people sanding down to 600, 800, or 1000, some even sand paint over 1500. The problem with that is, the paint has no tooth to stick on.
    I was at a seminar not too long ago with House of Kolor. The founder, Jon Kosmoski was saying the exact same thing.
    So I asked him, “What grit do you paint over?”
    He said, “400-grit”.
    I said, “I told them”.
    See? That’s what I always say and even the PRO himself says the same.
    I know some people are going to bag on me and say, “Hey, 400-grit is too rough.”
    But listen…Don’t listen to all the other people out there who are saying all kinds of stuff. Listen to the ones who are doing it. Listen to the PRO’s!
    I have been using 400-grit to paint over with my base coat and clear coat for many, many years. In fact, for over 15 years now and I’ve never had a problem.
    For some people who think that 400-grit is too coarse, I tell them to go ahead and use 600-grit. Honestly, in my opinion, I like 400-grit but 400-600 is a great range to put your base coat and clear coat over. Anything smoother and finer than that like 800, 1000, 1200,1500-grit…is NOT good because your paint is just not going to stick.
    At that seminar, Jon was telling me a story that he heard from someone…this guy painted his base coat/clear coat over 1500-grit. When the paint job was about a year old, he was driving at the freeway and when he got home, the paint was coming off of his car in sheets. There was nothing for the paint to adhere to.
    I know there’s a lot of stuff out there. You see all these other guys with videos, maybe saying otherwise. But I’m telling you, you would do well to paint over 400-600 grit if you’re painting base coat/clear coat, wet or dry. It really doesn’t matter.
    I like to wet sand for final painting so if you’re sanding a 2K primer, an epoxy or even a clear-coated surface or maybe if you have a car with an already nice paint job on it (say, you have a red car with a nice paint job but you’d like to put a different red hue on it or some kind of metallic, maybe)…All you have to do really is, scuff down the clear coat with 400-grit then you can lay your base coat and clear coat right on top of that.
    You don’t even have to put any primer on it. You can just put the new paint right on top of the clear coat.
    I want to get everything over your head right now but that’s just the gist of it. I wanted to make you understand it well.
    I hope you enjoyed the video…

  • @ZIPPOMANIAC
    @ZIPPOMANIAC Před 6 lety

    Hi, a very important question below which makes a lot of difference: When you mean 400 grit, which abrasive grading scale does your sandpaper fall under? CAMI (US) or FEPA (EU/International)?See this chart for explanation: goo.gl/images/wj9FSh400 CAMI is equivalent to FEPA P600-P800 grit.I’m from Singapore, we follow FEPA grading. Although it seems most manufacturers/brands even in the US has since many years ago adopted the FEPA grading, it is not certain what sandpaper you are using and hence I wish you could clarify. Thanks! PS, what brand of sandpaper do you use? Maybe that will give some clues. Don’t assume the lack of the letter “P” means it CAMI. Sometimes manufacturers don’t add in the letter by default.

    Part 1: Hi. Pls I need help. I've been walking on snow, winter storms for many years cuz I dont have a car and can't afford to buy one since I didn't have a job for awhile. Now I got a job and I bought a $600.00 car with my very first pay cheque. A 1999 Dodge Intrepid with 117.00 km on it. I bought it from a Chrysler/Dodge dealer. They guaranteed me the mileage is genuine since the car previous owner was an old woman. Anyways, but the problem is the paint job on the car. It's all feeling off, sunburned paint, etc. I had a friend(used to be, not anymore, since I found out that he was using the materials I bought for my car on other people's car he was painting) and so, he and I started work on the car. It's all sanded now, parts that needs to be filled with stuff is done. But since I discovered that he was robbing me. He walked out of HELPING me do my car. Now I am stucked, where do I go from here? What should I do next. I'm very seen the DIY proceedures but still nervous if I would do the right thing. I can send you pictures of the car so you can see and maybe you can give me an advice on how to go about it. I am here in Canada. And I just can't find any help from anyone here. Thank you. I have an email which is josiepacia@gmail.com. thank you. Hope to hear from you.

    Sorry to be redundant because I just asked this on another video but this looks like a better place for the question; in prepping for an overall repaint (BC/CC), is going over the entire car with a DA with 320# and then a gray scuff pad on a DA fine enough to apply the sealer? TIA!

    Question ! I’m using a metallic blueish grey paint after dry sanding 320 grit , and then laying down the base color , if there’s small bibs or dry flakes of paint is it possible to sand with 600 grit softly before laying down the clear ? Or should re sand and do the base over again or lay down the clear and pray for dirt bib removal techniques? Thanks for your time !!!!

    hey tony i know this is a old video but does spraying a sealer coat before base fill 400 grit scratches. reason i ask is because i, like you said hear people say 600 for metallics, which is what i am spraying. but i would assume spraying a sealer coat over 600 grit would be pushing it as far as adhesion correct? But what i gather from this video i should sand 400 grit wet, apply a sealer coat, then spray my base color? thanks in advanced

    If I'm trying to smooth out flat white (on wood) would you recommended 800 grit? wet? Dry? I painted flat white on 600 and there's one or two spots that need smoothing and I don't wanna spoil the surface

    How about sanding down orange peel and putting more clear over the vehicle what should I sand down before doing that 600 800 or higher. I used a da polisher with a sanding pad but it didn't get rid of enough orange peel so gonna use my new 5 inch orbital sander on it and just put more clear on.

    So I used 500 grit sandpaper before I put paint on my truck is that good. And can I also use 500 grit sandpaper before I put the primer on my truck. Also when putting paint primer, paint and clearcoat how many coats do you use. When I got most of the rust spots out of my truck before me and my dad were putting on at least 5 coats and we even did a little more.

    I’m working on a 1989 Toyota Pickup. It’s got the medium red pearl which I decided to re paint it the same color . Most people told me 800 grit but now that you say that it makes me worry it’s gonna roll right off the surface. Thinking about going to 600 grit , what do you think ? Would appreciate the help and guidance

    What grit for sanding primer before sealer/base coat? I give three coats of primer, but i find, even been light handed as i can using 400 grit, that on the edges and ridges i go through the primer back to metal.

    • @HowToPaintYourCar
      @HowToPaintYourCar  Před 2 lety

      Hey Man! You could use 400 grit, the finer the better coz you don’t want to go too fine but 400 is literally the perfect sand scratch grit to paint base coat clear coat or single stage over. Or you could actually go rougher coarser for like a 380 or a 360 if you’re doing a single stage. Single-stage is really thick and it fills but why not just go with 400. For my latest van project I finished it off with 400 that’s why it lay down so nice. GET more FREE Auto Body Training Guides and Videos at www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/

    This video is the area of advice I was hoping for, I want to remove the interior silver trim panels and repaint them with a Duplicolor colour match to my car and a Duplicolor plastic primer. The hand grips on the door have some light marks and the silver is rubbed down to black. From what I've gathered, I should use a 4-600 grit wet dry sandpaper and lightly go over it and remove any raised surfaces be it paint or the plastic for some reason. So, remove panels, sand it back a bit, prime the trim pieces, sand that back a bit, go over with my primary colour then, clear coat? I'm in no way ready to attempt with any confidence my vehicles paint damage yet in fear I make it worse but I have undercoated alot of models and miniatures in hobbying so I feel I can do the interior trims well to start with. Have I missed any steps? And yes chances are I'll be looking closer at your site when it comes to deciding if fixing my own paint damage on the exterior is realistic at home without a closed booth to paint in or if I should bite the bullet and compare either straight up swapping the panel with a colour matched wrecked vehicles and strip it off and just swap it into mine vs getting it fixed at a body shop, I just don't like the idea of being charged for work that wasn't necessary but they insist it was. (Curb rash from prior owner on front passenger bumper) - a like and subscribe given as I'm doing a video diary (early stages, need to edit and talk less or stick to points, it's just one point, shoot and upload from my mobile atm), when it comes to painting the trims I'll be linking this video as the advise followed as well as talking about my personal experiences during the process but giving you full credit of where I got my advice from 😉 really good simple video more DIY people would do well to listen too, people like me are not the professionals, were just happy to give things a go and learn. Get your advice fe industry experts not people using backyard approaches thinking it's the way to do it.

    i am doing a headlight reclear project, would sanding it down to 800 be okay? im scared the clear coat wont sit well with 400 grit and wont cause a transparent look. i orbital sanded the clear off with 320, wet sanded with 400, 600, 800, getting ready for clear. does that sound about right?

    600 grit is fine. Need to remind your client that an adhesion promoter is also a good tool when restarting you're 're spraying your car.
